Scientists model the universe by turning a defined cosmological theory into equations a computer can calculate, setting initial conditions, and stepping the model forward in time. A supercomputer lets many processors work on the calculation in parallel. The result is a set of predictions to compare with observations—not a complete copy or photograph of the universe.
What is actually inside a universe simulation?
It starts with a scientific question and a chosen cosmological framework: for example, how large-scale structure forms or how a galaxy evolves. Researchers translate the relevant physical laws into numerical rules and specify the model’s initial conditions. The computer then calculates how the represented system changes over successive time steps.
The contents depend on the question. Many large-scale structure models emphasize gravity and dark matter. Galaxy-formation models can also represent ordinary matter as gas, calculate its hydrodynamics, and include additional processes relevant to galaxies. NASA’s cosmic-web simulation description, for example, describes modeling matter, dark matter, and dark energy using equations of gravity, hydrodynamics, and cosmology.
Computational elements and resolution
A simulation does not track every particle in the real universe. It represents matter and forces with computational elements, such as particles or other numerical quantities. Resolution describes how finely the model represents the system. A NASA dwarf-galaxy project used millions of resolution elements to model gravitational and hydrodynamical forces; that is an example from one project, not a universal setting.

Researchers choose the simulated volume, resolution, and included physics to fit the scientific goal and available computing resources. A broad model can cover a large region while simplifying local detail; a focused model can examine a smaller region more closely. NASA’s galaxy-simulation description gives a project-specific example involving N-body methods and high-resolution regions.
Why use a supercomputer?
Even a simplified model can involve many interacting elements and repeated calculations over many time steps. Increasing the simulated volume, resolution, or amount of physics generally makes the calculation more demanding. Supercomputers distribute parts of the work across many processors so they can be calculated at the same time, enabling simulations larger or more detailed than an ordinary computer can feasibly run.

The hardware examples show different projects, not a single requirement for all universe simulations. NASA reports that hundreds of processors on its Pleiades supercomputer were used for a dwarf-galaxy project. The U.S. Department of Energy’s ExaSky project describes cosmological simulations designed for exascale computers.
Scale also changes over time. NASA’s 2009 account of the Bolshoi simulation identifies a total of 8 billion particles; that historical project figure is not a current benchmark or a typical count for every simulation. In another project-specific comparison, cosmologist Katrin Heitmann said that using Argonne’s now-retired Theta machine, her team accomplished in about nine days work that would have taken around 300 years on a laptop, according to NASA’s account of Roman mission simulations. The comparison applies to that project and retired machine, not to every simulation or today’s laptops.

How do scientists check a simulation?
A simulation produces predictions that researchers can compare with observations. It might predict where matter and cosmic filaments should lie, or how galaxies should develop. In the cosmic-web example, researchers used a three-dimensional computer model to estimate filament locations, then examined archival Hubble observations for gas at those predicted locations.
NASA’s ChaNGA project description explains how simulation results help interpret observations from missions such as Hubble. Agreement between a model and observations supports that model within the conditions and evidence tested; disagreement can prompt researchers to scrutinize the data, assumptions, or approximations in the simulated physics. The comparison is central because the computer output is a prediction, not direct proof that the model reproduces every feature of the universe.

What a universe simulation can—and cannot—tell us
- It can explore consequences of stated assumptions. Researchers can calculate how structures might form and evolve under a selected cosmological framework and set of physical rules.
- It can produce testable predictions. Predicted structures or galaxy properties can be compared with telescope observations.
- It is not a complete replica. Every simulation has a defined scope, finite resolution, and selected physical processes; its outputs should be understood in that context.
- Its design depends on the question. A model focused on large-scale gravity is not directly interchangeable with a galaxy-scale model that also calculates gas dynamics and other processes.
There is no single “best” simulation independent of purpose. A meaningful comparison asks what each model was built to study, what volume and resolution it represents, which physics and numerical methods it uses, how the calculation is distributed across computing resources, and which observations researchers use to assess its predictions.
