They test those models by turning their outputs into predictions—such as images and spectra—and comparing them with telescope observations. The result is not a movie of one galaxy’s life, but a scientific history constrained by evidence and revised when observations expose mismatches or new questions.
How can astronomers see galaxies in the past?
Light takes time to travel. When astronomers observe a distant galaxy, they see the light it emitted earlier, not the galaxy as it exists at the moment of observation. NASA illustrates the point with a galaxy whose light takes five billion years to reach us: we see it as it was five billion years ago. NASA Advanced Supercomputing explains the lookback-time example.
That delay gives astronomers snapshots from different periods of the universe. They compare samples of galaxies observed at different distances and cosmic epochs to infer how populations and their properties change over time. The samples are not a continuous record of one particular galaxy; models help connect the snapshots into plausible histories.
What kinds of models describe galaxy formation?
Galaxy-formation models begin with cosmological conditions and calculate how structure, matter, and gas evolve under gravity and other physical processes. Two broad approaches represent those processes differently. A 2015 Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics review discusses both within a cosmological framework.

| Approach | How it represents processes | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Semi-analytic model | Uses analytic or parameterized prescriptions for physical processes. | Processes are represented through recipes rather than by numerically resolving every detail. |
| Numerical hydrodynamic simulation | Numerically evolves matter and gas from cosmological initial conditions. | Resolution and computing limits mean some small-scale processes still have to be approximated. |
These approaches involve different computational costs and ways of representing physical detail. A simulation is not a perfect replay of the universe: its assumptions and approximations generate predictions that can be checked against observations. NASA identifies improvements in initial conditions, resolution, and the realism of simulated astrophysics as important to producing galaxies more like those observed.
How are simulations compared with telescope observations?
A model’s calculated quantities are not automatically equivalent to what a telescope records. The light reaching an instrument is affected by distance, wavelength, dust, and the instrument’s sensitivity. Researchers can account for some of these effects by creating synthetic observations—model-based images or spectra designed for comparison with actual data.

- Calculate a galaxy’s evolution. The model produces simulated matter, gas, and other properties under its chosen physical assumptions.
- Turn the output into observable light. In the NASA project described in its comparison with Hubble images, software incorporated stellar evolution and the scattering and absorption of starlight by dust to produce synthetic images and spectra.
- Compare like with like. Researchers compare those products with telescope data, taking account of how light and instruments affect what can be detected.
- Investigate mismatches. A disagreement can prompt scrutiny of the model’s physical prescriptions, how observations are interpreted, or which objects an observation selects. It does not, by itself, identify a single explanation.
When a model reproduces multiple observed properties, that supports its assumptions in the circumstances tested. The stronger test is whether it also makes predictions that can be checked against additional observations.
Computing needs vary with the project. NASA Advanced Supercomputing reported tens of millions of processor hours for the particular simulation project described in its 2015 account; that figure is an example for that project, not a general requirement for every galaxy simulation. NASA’s project account describes the simulation and its comparison with Hubble.

What do Webb’s early-galaxy observations add?
Webb’s infrared sensitivity and resolution have made it possible to study cosmic dust in the early universe that had previously been undetected, adding evidence about dust, star formation, and galaxy growth. NASA’s September 3, 2025 overview also describes reports of bright early galaxies, unexpected shapes, and chemical abundances that raise questions for models. These findings are constraints and active puzzles to investigate, not proof that galaxy-formation models have failed. NASA’s “Webb Science: Galaxies Through Time” summarizes the observations and open questions.
NASA quotes Webb project scientist Macarena Garcia Marin of the Space Telescope Science Institute: “We’ve never observed the distant, early universe in the detail that Webb is showing us, and so we are seeing new things and asking new questions we are still working to solve, which is exciting, but they have not contradicted our current best models.” New detail can refine a model’s constraints without automatically overturning its broader framework.

How do models help with regions that are hard to observe?
Not all the material relevant to a galaxy is easy to see. NASA’s FOGGIE project describes simulations of stellar and gaseous halos around galaxies as a way to interpret observations and predict properties in regions that are difficult to observe directly. In that role, a model helps connect a galaxy’s visible contents with its surrounding environment; it does not replace the observational evidence. NASA Advanced Supercomputing’s FOGGIE project summary describes this use of simulations.
What makes a galaxy-formation model useful?
A useful model is one whose predictions can be tested against more than one observed property and, ideally, against observations not used to tune it. Its limits also matter: finite resolution and simplified treatments of complex astrophysics affect what it can represent directly. Astronomers therefore use observations and models together—observations constrain the possible histories, while models offer a way to test how those histories could unfold.
