DNS tunneling turns ordinary domain-name lookups into a covert data channel. A client encodes data into DNS query names or record fields, sends those queries through resolvers to an attacker-controlled authoritative server, and reconstructs data returned in DNS responses. It is usually slow because DNS is a small, transactional request-and-response system—not a continuous byte stream—and every chunk is constrained by name syntax, resolver behavior, caching, retries, rate limits and detection controls.

There is no universal DNS-tunnel speed. Capacity varies with the encoding, record type, resolver path, cache behavior, implementation and defensive throttling. A credible estimate must describe those conditions rather than quote a single bit rate.

What DNS tunneling is

DNS normally translates a name such as www.example.com into an address or other record. In a tunnel, the name itself becomes a carrier for application data. A compromised or specially configured client adds encoded chunks to subdomain labels, for example chunk-identifier.tunnel-domain.example, and asks a resolver to look up that name. The tunnel operator controls the authoritative server for the tunnel domain, so it can read the encoded labels and send encoded data back in DNS responses.

MITRE ATT&CK describes this as using DNS to avoid detection or network filtering by blending with existing DNS traffic. Cloudflare gives the same practical distinction: instead of requesting a normal name and receiving a short address response, an attacker can send and receive long DNS queries and responses containing encoded data.

Characteristic Ordinary DNS DNS tunnel
Purpose Resolve names or retrieve DNS records Transport commands, results or other application data
Query content Human-readable host names and service labels Encoded, often opaque subdomain labels or record fields
Authoritative server Operated by the domain owner or its DNS provider Controlled by the tunnel operator
Response use Addresses, mail records, service metadata and similar DNS data Additional encoded chunks, acknowledgements or commands
Traffic pattern Often cacheable and repetitive Frequently unique, sequential or beacon-like

The participants

  • Client: The endpoint that converts application data into DNS-safe chunks and rebuilds the returned stream.
  • Recursive resolver: The organization’s or ISP’s DNS service. It forwards requests, caches answers and applies policy, which can help or hinder the tunnel.
  • Authoritative server: The server for the tunnel domain. It receives the encoded query and creates the response.
  • Controller or application: The process on the remote side that interprets commands and data carried by the tunnel.

How a bidirectional exchange works

  1. The client takes a command, result or file fragment and divides it into small pieces.
  2. It applies an encoding that fits DNS label and character rules, then adds sequencing information so pieces can be ordered.
  3. The client issues a DNS query for a name containing the encoded piece under the tunnel domain.
  4. The recursive resolver follows delegation to the operator’s authoritative server. The server decodes the query and records the piece.
  5. The authoritative server places an acknowledgement or the next data piece in a DNS response, commonly using fields such as TXT or A records.
  6. The client validates, reorders and reconstructs the response, then repeats the cycle until the exchange is complete.

Each query is still a DNS transaction. The tunnel does not turn the resolver into a general-purpose socket, and ordinary DNS components can cache, retry, truncate, delay or reject messages along the way.

Why DNS tunneling is so slow

DNS carries transactions, not a byte stream

TCP and similar transports present a continuous ordered stream. DNS presents discrete messages. A tunnel must therefore wrap every piece in a query, wait for a response and maintain its own sequencing and retransmission logic. A long payload becomes many round trips rather than one sustained transfer.

Small payloads and encoding overhead

DNS labels and full names have syntax and length limits. Separators, label boundaries, domain suffixes, sequence identifiers and checksums consume space that is not part of the original payload. Encodings chosen to survive DNS character rules also expand the data. Responses have their own record-size and truncation constraints. The result is lower payload efficiency than a normal application protocol.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resolver and cache behavior

Recursive resolvers are optimized to answer repeated questions from cache. A tunnel needs fresh, unique questions, so it often receives little cache benefit. Conversely, an accidentally cacheable response can prevent the authoritative server from seeing a subsequent query, forcing the tunnel to vary names or set short time-to-live values. Resolver queues, policy filters and rate controls add delay or cause drops.

Loss, retries and defensive pacing

If one chunk is lost, the tunnel must detect the gap and request or resend it. A resolver may retry upstream, return a timeout or report an error before the client can continue. Operators also pace queries to avoid obvious bursts and detection; that makes the channel less conspicuous but reduces throughput further. Infrequent DNS beacons can blend into normal traffic, yet they are particularly unsuitable for bulk transfer.

TCP and TLS add setup and state

DNS commonly uses UDP, but DNS over TCP, DNS over TLS (DoT) and some resolver paths add transport work. RFC 7858 states that TCP adds one round-trip time compared with UDP and that the TLS handshake adds two more round trips, along with additional memory and CPU. Persistent connections and pipelining, recommended in RFC 7766, can amortize those setup costs, but the tunnel still pays for DNS message framing and resolver processing.

Transport situation Effect on a tunnel
UDP DNS Lower setup cost, but each application chunk still requires a separate DNS exchange and loss recovery is external to DNS.
DNS over TCP One additional round trip for connection setup compared with UDP, plus maintained connection state.
DNS over TLS TCP setup plus two additional round trips for the TLS handshake, and extra CPU and memory for encryption and session state.
Persistent, pipelined TCP/TLS Reduces repeated setup overhead, but does not remove message-size, resolver, caching or policy limits.

How much data can a DNS tunnel carry?

No standards document or threat-framework source establishes one throughput number that applies to every DNS tunnel. A useful capacity estimate must identify at least the following variables:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Encoding: How much expansion is introduced and how much of each label is sequencing or control information?
  • Record type: TXT, A and other records have different practical response capacities and filtering behavior.
  • Resolver path: Number of recursive hops, connection reuse, timeout settings and policy enforcement affect delivery.
  • Caching: Fresh, unique names avoid stale answers but increase query volume and detection risk.
  • Loss and retries: A nominal payload size is not usable throughput if messages are frequently retransmitted.
  • Rate controls: Resolver, firewall or protective-DNS limits can deliberately throttle or block the channel.
  • Detection avoidance: Lower query frequency and smaller bursts reduce visibility but directly reduce capacity.

For that reason, a claim such as “DNS tunnels carry X kilobits per second” is incomplete unless it states the implementation, record type, resolver, network conditions, loss rate and pacing policy. In practice, the channel is better suited to commands, credentials, small results or periodic beacons than to reliable bulk transfer.

What attackers put in DNS traffic

Subdomain and record-field concealment

MITRE records concealment in subdomains and in DNS record fields. A sequence of apparently random labels can carry command output or instructions. TXT records provide a flexible response field; A records can also be abused by encoding information in address values or by using them as acknowledgements. The exact choice depends on what resolvers and filters permit.

Beaconing and low-and-slow operation

A client may contact the tunnel domain at irregular, widely spaced intervals rather than generate a conspicuous burst. This can resemble ordinary software telemetry, but it lengthens transfer time and makes interactive use frustrating. Unique names, changing labels and short-lived responses help avoid cache reuse while creating valuable detection signals.

Encrypted resolver paths

DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT) encrypt the connection between a client and its resolver. MITRE identifies encrypted resolver lookups as a way to hide DNS from controls that only inspect cleartext packets. Encryption does not make the tunnel inherently faster; it can add setup and processing costs, and it can move visibility from packet contents to resolver, endpoint and policy telemetry.

How to detect DNS tunneling

One indicator is rarely conclusive. Detection works best when content shape, timing, destination and process identity are correlated across logs.

Inspect label length and character distribution

Flag labels that are unusually long, contain a narrow repetitive alphabet or have high apparent entropy compared with normal host names. Long runs of encoded-looking characters, frequent delimiters and systematic sequence markers are stronger when they recur under one domain.

Measure uniqueness and rarity

Count how often a client requests names that have never appeared before. A high ratio of unique subdomains, especially beneath a newly seen or rarely queried parent domain, is more suspicious than repeated lookups to popular services. Combine rarity with domain age, ownership context and the endpoint’s normal software profile rather than treating novelty alone as proof.

Analyze timing and volume

Look for regular beacons, bursts of small queries, unusually high query volume from one process or a steady stream that ignores normal user activity. Slow, periodic traffic can be as meaningful as a burst when it is directed to an unusual destination.

Check resolver and destination paths

Compare endpoint settings with the organization’s approved recursive resolvers. Direct queries to external resolvers or repeated contact with a domain’s authoritative infrastructure bypass normal policy and deserve investigation. Firewalls and resolver logs can reveal this path even when the payload is encrypted to a DoH or DoT provider.

Correlate endpoint, recursive and firewall telemetry

Resolver records show the names and timing; endpoint telemetry can identify the process that issued them; firewall data shows the remote address and transport. Correlation helps separate a browser, software updater or security product from an unknown executable using the same machine.

Reassemble TCP completely

RFC 9210 warns that DNS monitoring should not ignore TCP and recommends full stream reassembly. Small TCP segments can be used to evade systems that inspect only individual packets. A detector should reconstruct the DNS stream before applying length, content and transaction rules.

“Developers of applications that log or monitor DNS SHOULD NOT ignore TCP due to the perception that it is rarely used or is hard to process.” — RFC 9210

Defensive controls that reduce tunnel risk

Make approved recursive DNS mandatory

Route endpoints through designated recursive resolvers and block direct external DNS where the environment permits. This creates a consistent enforcement point for logging, domain reputation, rate limits and tunnel analytics. Exceptions for infrastructure that genuinely requires another resolver should be documented and monitored.

Decide how to handle DoH and DoT

Encrypted DNS can be legitimate, but unmanaged resolver endpoints can bypass enterprise policy. Choose an explicit policy: allow only approved encrypted resolvers, inspect at managed endpoints, or block unauthorized DoH and DoT destinations. The decision should account for privacy requirements, device ownership and the visibility your security team needs.

Use protective-DNS and tunnel-detection policies

Apply reputation and newly registered-domain controls, label-length and entropy analytics, query-rate limits and response anomaly rules. Tune thresholds against known applications so that unusual but legitimate telemetry does not become a permanent source of false positives.

Retain the logs needed for correlation

Keep query name, record type, response code, timestamp, client identity, resolver identity and destination details. Retain enough endpoint process and network-flow data to connect a suspicious sequence to the software that generated it. Include TCP sessions and the resolver’s encrypted-traffic metadata where content inspection is not available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Respond to a high-confidence alert

  1. Preserve the relevant resolver, endpoint and firewall records, including the complete DNS transaction sequence.
  2. Identify the process, user, device and first-seen time associated with the queries.
  3. Compare the parent domain, authoritative infrastructure and label pattern with approved business services.
  4. Contain the endpoint or block the tunnel domain when evidence indicates unauthorized command-and-control activity.
  5. Search other endpoints for the same domain, label structure, process hash or resolver destination.
  6. Remove persistence, reset exposed credentials and validate that approved DNS policy is enforced before returning the device to normal access.
Defensive approach Visibility Policy enforcement Main limitation
Central recursive resolver High for names, timing and client identity Can block domains, rate-limit and log consistently Misses traffic that bypasses it unless direct DNS is blocked
Endpoint DNS controls Can identify the issuing process and user Can restrict resolver choices on managed devices Coverage depends on device management and agent health
Firewall egress controls Shows external destinations and transport Can block unauthorized resolver addresses Usually cannot interpret encrypted DNS content
Encrypted-DNS policy Metadata and approved-provider visibility Can allow managed DoH/DoT and block unapproved endpoints Requires a deliberate privacy and inspection policy

DNS tunneling compared with ordinary TCP and UDP

Comparison axis DNS tunnel Ordinary TCP Ordinary UDP
Payload efficiency Reduced by DNS syntax, labels, record framing and encoding High; application bytes use a continuous stream High per datagram, subject to application framing
Per-message overhead Every chunk traverses a DNS query/response path Connection and packet headers, amortized over a stream Datagram headers and application-managed sessions
Latency and loss recovery Resolver delay, retries and tunnel-level sequencing Built-in ordered delivery and congestion control Application must handle loss and ordering if required
Cache and resolver dependence Strong; caches and policy can alter delivery None for the payload path once connected None for the payload path once sent
Detectability Can blend with DNS, but encoded labels and rarity are measurable Usually obvious as a direct application connection Usually obvious as datagrams to a service
Operational reliability Variable across resolvers, filters and authoritative paths Predictable when the connection is permitted Fast but intentionally offers less delivery assurance

A practical investigation workflow

When an alert fires, use a staged process rather than blocking every unusual name.

  1. Establish the baseline: Determine whether the client, parent domain and process are normal for that user, device group and time of day.
  2. Characterize the labels: Measure length, character distribution, uniqueness, sequencing and whether labels decode into a consistent structure.
  3. Trace the path: Verify which resolver answered, whether the endpoint bypassed it, and whether the destination is an authoritative server or an encrypted-DNS provider.
  4. Quantify the behavior: Review query rate, response codes, intervals, retries and duration. A slow, persistent sequence can indicate deliberate pacing.
  5. Correlate the process: Match timestamps with endpoint process starts, network connections, scheduled tasks and recent software changes.
  6. Contain proportionally: Block the specific domain or resolver path first when confidence is moderate; isolate the endpoint when command-and-control evidence is strong.
  7. Hunt broadly: Search for the same label pattern, authoritative infrastructure and process indicators across the environment.

Common sources of false positives

  • Content-delivery, security and software-update systems can generate long, unique host names.
  • Service-discovery and telemetry products may use high-entropy identifiers without carrying covert data.
  • Large organizations can legitimately contact rare domains during deployments, incident response or research.
  • Managed DoH or DoT can look unusual to packet sensors even when the resolver is approved.

Use multiple signals before escalating: suspicious label structure plus unusual volume, rare destination, resolver bypass or an unknown endpoint process is substantially stronger than any single feature.
