No—AMD Radeon graphics cards do not run native NVIDIA DLSS. DLSS is built for NVIDIA’s RTX software and hardware stack, including Tensor Cores and, for frame generation, an Optical Flow Accelerator. A Radeon driver cannot enable that native path. On Radeon, use a game’s integrated AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) first, Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) as a driver-level fallback, or an unofficial wrapper that substitutes another technology with substantial limitations.
A ported or translated feature can make a DLSS-labelled option produce an upscaled or generated image, but it does not turn an RX 7900, RX 9070, or any other Radeon card into a supported GeForce RTX device. The result depends on the game, renderer, API, anti-cheat system, driver, and wrapper build.
What DLSS actually is
Deep Learning Super Sampling is a family of neural-rendering features from NVIDIA. In its basic Super Resolution mode, the game renders at a lower internal resolution and supplies motion data, depth information, exposure and other signals to a trained model. The model reconstructs a higher-resolution image, reducing the shading work required for the output resolution.
DLSS is not one switch with identical requirements across all versions. Its feature set includes several separate paths:
#1 Best Overall
- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
- Super Resolution: AI-assisted temporal upscaling.
- Frame Generation: synthesizes intermediate frames from rendered frames, motion data and optical-flow information.
- Ray Reconstruction: uses a model to replace or improve parts of ray-traced denoising.
- Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA): applies the reconstruction model at native resolution rather than upscaling.
- Reflex: a separate latency-reduction and frame-pacing component associated with the DLSS 3 feature set.
- Multi Frame Generation: creates multiple AI-generated frames between rendered frames in supported newer GeForce RTX implementations.
NVIDIA’s architecture documentation describes DLSS Frame Generation using fourth-generation Tensor Cores and an Optical Flow Accelerator. NVIDIA’s developer documentation describes Multi Frame Generation as using fifth-generation Tensor Cores in GeForce RTX 50 Series hardware. Those requirements are why copying a game file or exposing a menu entry cannot reproduce every DLSS function on a Radeon.
Why a Radeon cannot simply turn on native DLSS
A game’s DLSS path is connected to NVIDIA’s NGX/NVAPI ecosystem and to the model-execution environment expected by the NVIDIA driver. The game does not merely ask the operating system for a generic upscaler; it loads a vendor-specific implementation and passes it engine data in the format that implementation expects.
NVIDIA’s driver guidance also makes the API dependency visible on Proton and Linux: DLSS requires the relevant NVIDIA APIs, including NVAPI, to be exposed. A Radeon driver does not provide that NVIDIA execution environment, and its GPU does not contain NVIDIA Tensor Cores or the NVIDIA Optical Flow hardware used by the documented frame-generation path.
This is a hardware, driver and integration boundary, not a missing checkbox in AMD Software. Installing a newer Radeon driver cannot add native DLSS, and changing a game’s configuration file cannot create the required NVIDIA acceleration path.
What AMD provides instead
Game-integrated FidelityFX Super Resolution
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution is the supported cross-vendor alternative when a developer integrates it into the game. The game’s renderer supplies the motion vectors, depth, jitter, reactive masks and other signals needed by the selected FSR implementation. Because the integration is inside the engine, the developer can handle disocclusions, particles, transparencies and user-interface elements for that specific title.

AMD explicitly distinguishes FSR from RSR: FSR requires game integration, while RSR is a driver-based solution. AMD support guidance recommends the built-in FSR option when a game has one because game-specific optimizations may produce better upscaling than RSR.
AMD’s current FSR documentation describes “Redstone” technologies that bring machine-learning-powered 4K gaming to Radeon RX 9000 Series cards. It also lists ML-based FSR upscaling availability on RX 7000 and RX 9000 series hardware, with additional support planned. GPU-generation and driver support are moving targets, so check the current game and driver compatibility list for the exact Radeon model before assuming a particular FSR mode is available.
Radeon Super Resolution
RSR is a driver-level upscaler for compatible Radeon hardware and fullscreen games. It works outside games that have not integrated FSR: you enable RSR in the Radeon driver, select a lower resolution in the game, and the driver scales the rendered image to the display resolution.
That convenience comes with less game-specific information. RSR cannot receive the same engine-level motion vectors, reactive masks or UI instructions that an integrated upscaler can. It may therefore show more shimmering, ghosting or softened menus than a well-integrated FSR implementation. For a game with built-in FSR, AMD recommends choosing FSR instead of RSR.
Native DLSS, FSR, RSR and ports compared
| Option | Reconstruction and stability | Frame generation and latency | Game, API and anti-cheat compatibility | GPU requirements | Support and updates |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native NVIDIA DLSS | Uses the game’s NVIDIA integration and the model version selected for that title; behavior varies by DLSS generation and implementation. | Supported DLSS Frame Generation uses NVIDIA Tensor and Optical Flow hardware. Reflex and frame pacing are separate parts of the stack, so displayed FPS is not the same as end-to-end latency. | Requires a game implementation and the NVIDIA API/driver environment. Proton and Linux deployments also need the required NVIDIA APIs exposed. | Feature availability depends on the relevant GeForce RTX generation; newer features have newer hardware requirements. | NVIDIA and the game developer control driver, model and game updates. |
| Game-integrated AMD FSR | Uses the game’s motion, depth, exposure and masking data. Quality depends on the FSR version and the developer’s integration. | Where a game offers FSR frame generation, measure latency and pacing separately from the overlay FPS; generated frames do not remove the cost of rendering the base frames. | Works only in games that include the FSR path and can vary by renderer and game version. | Depends on the FSR version, game and Radeon generation. Current ML features are associated with specified RX 7000 and RX 9000 support. | AMD supplies the technology, but the game developer controls integration and title updates. |
| Radeon Super Resolution | Driver-level scaling with less access to engine data, so results can differ from integrated FSR. | RSR is an upscaler, not a promise of NVIDIA-style frame generation or Reflex behavior. | Designed for compatible Radeon hardware and fullscreen games, including titles without FSR integration. | Requires a compatible Radeon driver and hardware; exact support can change with driver releases. | Updated through AMD drivers, without per-game integration fixes. |
| Community port or wrapper | May replace DLSS with FSR, XeSS or another shader/model path. Image quality, UI handling and stability depend on the wrapper and game. | May bridge a frame-generation interface, but it cannot reproduce NVIDIA Tensor/Optical Flow execution or guarantee Reflex-equivalent latency. | Can fail with unusual APIs, Vulkan or DirectX 11 implementations, anti-cheat, online services and game updates. | Depends on the replacement technology and the Radeon driver; no single hardware guarantee exists. | Unofficial project maintenance only. Neither AMD nor NVIDIA promises support or compatibility. |
What “ported DLSS” means in practice
Community middleware such as OptiScaler can intercept a game’s upscaler or frame-generation calls and replace them with FSR, XeSS or another compatible implementation. Its documented scope includes DLSS 2-or-newer and FSR 2-or-newer inputs, plus frame-generation bridges, but it also warns that compatibility is game-dependent and advises against use with online games.

In another approach, a project may execute a DLSS model through generic DirectX compute rather than NVIDIA’s Tensor Core path. That can produce an image on a Radeon, but it is still a translation or replacement layer. The wrapper may expose a menu item named “DLSS” while the actual work is done by FSR, a different model or a shader implementation.

Expect differences in ghosting, fine-detail retention, foliage shimmer, particle treatment, HUD clarity and frame pacing. A wrapper can also break after a game update changes a DLL interface, renderer, shader layout or anti-cheat check. Treat each build as a title-specific experiment, not as a universal Radeon feature.
What ported features cannot promise
They cannot provide NVIDIA hardware acceleration
A Radeon port cannot execute the documented NVIDIA Tensor Core and Optical Flow hardware path. It may run an alternative shader or compute path, but the hardware behavior, scheduling and performance characteristics are different.
They cannot guarantee complete feature parity
Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, DLAA, Reflex and Multi Frame Generation have different data and hardware requirements. A wrapper might replace one upscaler call while leaving ray reconstruction, anti-aliasing, latency control or multi-frame generation unsupported.
They cannot guarantee identical latency
Generated frames increase the number of images displayed without eliminating the rendering time of the base frames. Reflex and vendor-specific scheduling affect input-to-display behavior separately. Evaluate end-to-end latency, frame-time graphs and responsiveness—not only the FPS number shown by an overlay.

They cannot guarantee every game will work
DLSS is integrated per game and engine. Wrappers may fail with Vulkan, DirectX 11, unusual interfaces, anti-cheat systems, online services or a later game patch. OptiScaler’s warning about online games is especially important: an unofficial DLL or injection layer can violate a service’s rules or trigger protection.
They do not come with vendor support
AMD’s support material states that FSR requires developer integration and that AMD does not provide technical or warranty support for enabling FSR on another vendor’s graphics card. An unofficial DLSS-on-Radeon path likewise has no NVIDIA support commitment. Troubleshooting rests with the project maintainers and the game community.
They cannot guarantee a visual match
Temporal reconstruction depends on motion vectors, exposure, jitter, reactive masks, model version and UI treatment. Matching a menu label does not ensure matching detail, stability or artifact behavior.

When the game has FSR
- Update Radeon Software and the game to versions supported by the title’s documentation.
- Open the game’s graphics or display settings and select its built-in FSR option.
- Choose an output-resolution and quality mode that leaves enough GPU headroom for the game’s native rendering workload.
- Test a moving scene containing foliage, thin geometry, particles and HUD elements. Check for ghosting and shimmer rather than judging a static screenshot.
- If frame generation is available, compare frame-time consistency and input response with it enabled and disabled.
When the game has no FSR
- Confirm that the Radeon model and current driver support RSR.
- Enable Radeon Super Resolution in the Radeon driver’s gaming graphics settings.
- Run the game in a compatible fullscreen mode and select a resolution below the display’s native resolution.
- Check the result in motion. If menus or fine detail look unstable, RSR’s lack of engine-level data may be the limiting factor.
When considering a community wrapper
- Verify that the exact game version, renderer and upscaler interface are listed as compatible by the wrapper project.
- Use it only in an offline or single-player context unless the game operator explicitly permits modification.
- Back up configuration files and saves, record the original files, and keep a clean way to remove the wrapper.
- Install only the release files documented for that game; do not assume a build for one renderer works with another.
- Compare image quality, frame-time behavior and input latency with the native game options. Remove the wrapper if updates, crashes or anti-cheat warnings appear.
Answers for common Radeon questions
Can an RX 7900 or RX 9070 run DLSS?
Not natively. Those cards can use game-integrated FSR and, where supported, RSR. An unofficial wrapper may substitute another implementation for a DLSS call, but that is not native DLSS and has no universal compatibility guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes DLSS Frame Generation work on AMD?
The NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation path is not supported by the AMD driver stack. A game or wrapper may offer AMD or third-party frame generation, but its hardware path, latency and compatibility are different from NVIDIA’s implementation.
Is FSR the AMD equivalent of DLSS?
FSR is AMD’s supported alternative for games that integrate it, but “equivalent” should not be read as identical. The algorithms, model requirements, engine integration and frame-generation behavior differ. RSR is a separate driver-level fallback, not the same thing as FSR.
Will a DLSS mod improve every Radeon game?
No. A mod can fail because of the game’s API, renderer, anti-cheat, update history or missing motion data. Even when it runs, it may replace only one DLSS component and can produce different artifacts or latency.
