A game being delisted, shut down, or rendered unplayable does not automatically create the same refund right on every store. Your outcome depends on the seller that processed payment, your country, the purchase date, whether downloading or streaming began, and whether the problem is a legally relevant failure to provide conforming digital content. Start with the receipt and contact that seller; preserve the order ID, dates, error evidence, shutdown notices, and support replies.
What a delisting, shutdown, or failure actually means
These events are often treated as one problem, but they have different consequences:
- Store delisting: New customers can no longer buy the title. Existing customers may still be able to download and play it.
- Account or licence problem: The purchase remains listed, but your account cannot download, launch, or verify it.
- Server shutdown: Online authentication, matchmaking, cloud saves, or other required services have ended. A game may be installed yet unusable.
- Technical defect: The game crashes, fails to install, loses required features, or otherwise does not work as the contract described.
A delisting by itself is therefore not proof that the digital content is faulty. A later shutdown can also be lawful if the contract and applicable law do not promise access for a particular period. The strongest refund cases usually involve a persistent defect, a service that was represented as included but cannot be supplied, or a consumer remedy required by the law governing the purchase.
Who decides your refund
Send the request to the seller of record—the business named on your receipt—not necessarily the game developer. A publisher’s announcement may explain a shutdown, but the storefront or retailer that charged your card normally controls refunds and licence records.

- Open the original email receipt or account order history.
- Record the merchant name, order number, purchase date, currency, and payment method.
- Use that merchant’s refund or support channel. If the receipt names a publisher or another retailer rather than a platform, contact that seller instead.
Keep a copy of every submission and reply. If your account shows several transactions, identify the exact edition, add-on, or bundle item affected; a refund decision can differ for each item.

Steam: two different 14-day concepts
Steam’s EU/UK terms describe a statutory withdrawal period for digital content that expires 14 days after purchase or when downloading starts, whichever is sooner. Separately, Steam voluntarily offers refunds worldwide for digital games when the request is within 14 days and recorded playtime is under two hours. The voluntary policy is a customer-service rule, not a statement that every later failure must be refunded.
If a title is delisted after you bought it, explain what has actually failed: inability to re-download, an account licence error, a required server that has closed, or a reproducible technical defect. Attach screenshots, error codes, and any shutdown notice. Steam says consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights when content is faulty, so a request outside the ordinary window should identify the conformity problem and the country of purchase rather than rely only on the two-hour rule.

PlayStation Store: starting a download changes the position
PlayStation UK’s cancellation policy gives a 14-day change-of-mind period for a game or add-on only when downloading or streaming has not started. After that point, the policy says the content is not eligible unless it is faulty. The PlayStation refund checklist directs eligible users to the refund-request process.
For a post-shutdown request, state whether the game requires an online service, when that service stopped, and whether the advertised single-player or offline functions still work. A delisting that leaves an already downloaded copy playable is different from a server closure that removes an essential, purchased function. The UK rule is not automatically the rule in every country; use the policy shown for your account region and any local statutory rights.
Microsoft and Xbox: submit through order history
Microsoft’s support guidance says digital goods are not refundable unless the offer or applicable law makes the buyer eligible. Its online flow asks you to select the item from order history, explain the reason, and submit a request. Microsoft says processing may take up to 72 hours.
Xbox web-purchase terms also reserve the ability to remove or change features or stop providing access to a digital product. That clause means a delisting is not, by itself, a promise of repayment. It does not erase statutory rights for an incorrect charge or other legally protected remedy. Describe the concrete loss of function, the date it began, and the steps you took to troubleshoot before asking for a refund review.

Nintendo eShop: region matters most
Nintendo’s US digital-products policy says payments through Nintendo Account services are final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. It does not promise an automatic refund when a game is removed or later stops working. Because Nintendo’s terms and consumer protections differ by region, identify the country tied to the transaction and consult the support route for that region.
When contacting support, provide the Nintendo Account email or identifier requested by the support form, the transaction date and number, the title and edition, and evidence that the failure is not limited to a local network or console setting. Do not assume a US policy controls a purchase made elsewhere.
What consumer law can add
European Union digital-content conformity
European Commission guidance uses software that “suddenly stops working” as an example of digital content that may fail to conform to the contract. Where the legal conditions are met, remedies can include bringing the content into conformity, a price reduction, or termination with a refund. The Commission’s 2026 communication on the Stop Destroying Videogames initiative says existing EU consumer law provides important safeguards and that a proportionate refund may be available when digital content or a service does not conform.

United Kingdom Consumer Rights Act 2015
The UK Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides remedies for faulty digital content. Depending on the failure and whether the trader can put it right, the consumer may be entitled to repair or replacement, a price reduction, or termination. A refund must use the same payment method unless the consumer agrees otherwise. The Act does not turn every delisting into a guaranteed full refund; show how the content fails to meet the contract and why a repair or replacement is impossible or inadequate.

1. Identify the transaction
Find the receipt, seller of record, purchase country, date, edition, and payment reference. A gift, subscription entitlement, physical code, and direct digital purchase can be governed by different terms.
2. Classify the event
Write one sentence distinguishing a store delisting, account-licence problem, server shutdown, or technical defect. If the game still launches offline, explain that; if an essential server is gone, document the resulting feature loss.

3. Check time and usage limits
Record when downloading or streaming began, total playtime or use, and whether the relevant 14-day period has expired. These facts matter to Steam and PlayStation policies and help the seller evaluate a statutory request.

4. Preserve evidence
- Save error codes, crash logs, screenshots, and videos showing the failure.
- Capture the publisher or platform shutdown announcement with its date.
- Note the first failure date, troubleshooting steps, and whether other users or devices show the same issue.
- Keep support-ticket numbers and complete replies; do not delete the original receipt.
5. Ask for remedies in a sensible order
Where local law uses conformity remedies, request restoration, a fix, or another way to receive the promised function first. If the seller cannot or will not put the content right, ask for a proportionate price reduction or contract termination and refund where your law allows. State the remedy you want and attach the evidence supporting it.
6. Escalate only after a clear refusal
If support rejects the request, reply with the purchase country, the relevant consumer-law provision, the specific conformity failure, and the remedy sought. You may then contact the appropriate consumer-protection authority or dispute-resolution service for that jurisdiction. A bank chargeback is a separate payment dispute, not the normal first refund step; filing one can lead to account restrictions or loss of access, so understand those risks before proceeding.
Common mistakes that weaken a request
- Calling every delisting “faulty.” Explain the actual loss of function and why it affects the purchased content.
- Contacting the developer first and stopping there. The developer may announce the shutdown, but the seller of record normally decides the refund.
- Ignoring geography. A US eShop rule, UK PlayStation rule, and EU statutory remedy cannot be substituted for one another.
- Leaving out dates and usage. Download start, streaming start, playtime, and failure date determine which window or remedy can apply.
- Assuming an installed copy guarantees future access. Licence checks and required servers can make an installed game unusable after a service change.
- Leading with a chargeback. Give the merchant a documented opportunity to resolve the issue and treat payment disputes as a last-resort, separate process.
What to write in the support request
Use a factual, compact statement such as:
Order: [order number]
Purchase date and country: [date, country]
Title and edition: [game and edition]
Problem: [delisting, licence error, server shutdown, or reproducible defect]
First failure: [date]
Evidence: [error code, screenshots, announcement, ticket numbers]
Requested remedy: [restore/fix, proportionate reduction, or termination and refund under the law applicable to this purchase]Replace each bracketed item with your information before sending. Do not claim a shutdown or defect you cannot document.

- Removed from the store but still playable: expect no automatic refund; ask only if another contractual or statutory issue exists.
- Downloaded or streamed and now defective: the ordinary change-of-mind window may be closed, but a faulty-content remedy can remain available under the store policy or local law.
- Online game shut down: contact the seller of record, show that the required service was essential, and request the remedy your jurisdiction provides; a shutdown alone does not guarantee repayment.
- Unclear or rejected case: preserve the record, cite the purchase country’s law, use a consumer authority or dispute route, and treat chargeback as a separate last resort.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a delisted game have to be refunded?
No. Delisting stops or limits new sales but does not by itself create an automatic refund right. A refund may be possible if the game no longer conforms to the contract or another rule in your purchase country requires a remedy.
Can I refund a downloaded game that is faulty?
Possibly. Steam and PlayStation policies include faulty-content exceptions, and consumer laws in some jurisdictions provide remedies after download. Document the defect and ask the seller of record rather than relying on a change-of-mind window.
Who do I contact when an online game shuts down?
Contact the store or retailer named on your receipt. Include the shutdown date, the functions that no longer work, your order ID, and the applicable country; the developer’s notice is supporting evidence, not usually the refund channel.
How long does an Xbox digital refund request take?
