You do not have to change culture every era in HUMANKIND 2. The announced design lets you preserve one identity or reshape it at Crossroads reached through exploration, settlement, diplomacy and adaptation. Progression begins with a situation-specific First Tale, continues through a culture’s Customs tree, and is continually tested by biomes and changing climate.
HUMANKIND 2 is unreleased. The details below describe Amplitude Studios’ announcements and a hands-on preview available in October 2026; costs, balance and interface details may change before the planned 2027 PC launch.
The progression loop at a glance
Historical Mode starts on an authentic map of Earth. Your civilization receives a First Tale linked to its founding circumstances, develops through six eras, and makes cultural decisions that persist beyond a single turn or era. More than 70 cultures are announced, and each has a separate progression tree rather than one permanent bonus chosen at the beginning.
| System | What is established | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Historical Mode | Authentic Earth map and six eras, moving from early settlements toward the Modern Age (Amplitude Studios, 15 October 2026) | Geography and era context frame every cultural decision |
| First Tale | Every game begins with a founding situation that supplies early effects and settlement direction | Your opening biome and resources influence the first strategy |
| Culture roster | More than 70 playable cultures are announced | You can build a distinct identity instead of following one fixed civilization path |
| Customs tree | Each culture has its own progression tree of Customs, culminating in a Legacy Trait | Selections add bonuses, units or districts and remain part of your civilization |
| Crossroads | At cultural turning points you may keep your culture or choose a route based on history, shared land or foreign contact | Switching is optional and changes later options, aesthetics and roles |
| Adaptation System | Biomes and climate influence traits and abilities | A successful adaptation can lose value when the environment changes |
How a game starts: First Tales
A First Tale is the civilization’s founding myth and an actionable opening package, not merely introductory text. The first public gameplay example uses Flood Tamer, associated with Ancient Egypt. First Tale effects shown in the preview alter resources, tile behavior and citizen roles, while also pointing your first settlements toward a particular kind of terrain.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes the starting location a strategic commitment. Amplitude says each biome supplies different resources, opportunities and challenges. A floodplain, desert margin, forest or cold coast can therefore produce a different opening even before you select later Customs. Check what the First Tale rewards and what the nearby tiles can actually support before spreading your first settlements.
What to evaluate in the opening turns
- Resource access: Identify which materials your First Tale improves and whether they are nearby or require expansion.
- Tile behavior: Look for terrain rules that make certain tiles unusually productive or suitable for specialist citizens.
- Citizen roles: Note which jobs the tale enables or favors; those roles can determine whether you prioritize food, production, authority or exploration.
- Biome risk: A strong short-term bonus may place you in an environment that becomes difficult if climate trends later change.
Culture is a progression tree, not a single bonus
HUMANKIND 2’s cultures are built as trees of Customs. Amplitude describes each of the more than 70 cultures as having its own tree containing traits, customs, abilities and bonuses. The tree ultimately leads to a choice of Legacy Trait, so the identity you carry into later eras reflects several decisions rather than one opening selection.
The hands-on preview presents Customs as tiered choices placed into a limited number of bonus slots. You are tailoring the culture through trade-offs instead of automatically collecting every benefit. Examples shown include authority generation, water use and desert resilience. A society specializing in authority may govern a broad realm effectively but give up a slot that would have improved water management; the exact numbers and slot counts have not been published.

What Customs can unlock
- Bonuses and traits: Modifiers that support a particular economy, government or environment.
- Units: New military or exploration capabilities tied to the culture’s identity.
- Districts: Special urban construction options that change how settlements develop.
- Legacy Trait: A culminating choice that defines what the culture contributes to the civilization’s longer history.
Because Customs remain part of the civilization, an early choice can still matter after a culture change. The practical question is not “Which culture has the highest bonus?” but “Which combination of Customs and Legacy Trait fits the map, the next era and the route I may want at a Crossroads?”
Era progression and the choice to evolve
The announced campaign spans six distinct eras, from early settlements toward the Modern Age. The exact names, turn thresholds and transition rules have not been released. Reaching a new era does not automatically replace your culture. Amplitude explicitly presents cultural evolution as optional: you may maintain one cultural identity or evolve through choices shaped by exploration, settlement, diplomacy and adaptation.
Ancient Egypt illustrates the continuity option. In the official example, Egypt extends across two eras. When the medieval era arrives, the player can continue as the Egyptians or select a new option connected through Common History. Remaining Egyptian preserves the continuity of your existing identity; changing culture opens a different set of Customs, visual language and citizen roles.

When staying with one culture is sensible
- Your current Customs match the resources and terrain you control.
- Your next Legacy Trait supports the type of economy or military you are already building.
- You have invested in a city layout or citizen structure that would lose value after a switch.
- The available Crossroads alternatives demand culture points you would rather spend elsewhere.
When a switch can be worth the disruption
- A new biome or climate makes your old adaptations inefficient.
- A foreign contact offers a unit or ability that solves a strategic problem.
- Your current culture’s remaining Customs do not support the empire’s direction.
- A shared-land route connects you to a culture whose city identity and roles better fit your territory.
Crossroads: the three ways to branch
At a Crossroads, HUMANKIND 2 presents three announced routes. The preview reports different culture-point costs, but Amplitude has not published final numerical prices or the complete culture graph. Treat the relative pattern below as preview information, not a guaranteed launch rule.
Recommended Free Tools
| Route | Connection | Preview cost | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common history | A culture linked to your current identity through historical relationships | Free in the hands-on preview | Provides a continuity-oriented branch with new Customs and other culture-specific options |
| Shared land | A culture that occupies the same geography as your civilization | Culture-point cost in the preview | Reflects regional coexistence and opens a different cultural tree, look and set of roles |
| Foreign contact | A culture encountered through contact with another people | Higher culture-point cost in the preview | Rewards diplomacy, exploration or interaction with an outside society |
The route affects more than the name displayed on the map. New cultures open additional Customs, city aesthetics and citizen roles. A common-history choice may be the least disruptive, while foreign contact can be the most expensive but provide capabilities unavailable through local continuity. The best choice depends on whether you value continuity, biome fit, city identity or long-term flexibility.
A practical Crossroads checklist
- Inspect the Customs and Legacy Trait offered by each route, not just the culture name.
- Compare the route’s biome-related abilities with the terrain and climate you currently occupy.
- Check your culture-point reserve and the opportunity cost of paying for shared-land or foreign-contact options.
- Decide whether a new city aesthetic or citizen role improves your existing settlements or requires costly redevelopment.
- Choose continuity when your current tree remains coherent; switch when the new route solves a problem your present culture cannot address efficiently.
Adaptation ties culture to the environment
The Adaptation System makes geography an active part of cultural development. Amplitude says each biome has distinct resources and challenges, and civilizations can unlock traits and abilities shaped by their surroundings. This creates a feedback loop: where you live shapes which adaptations are useful, and those adaptations help you exploit or survive that place.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
One official example has Egyptian settlers meet the Thule people of Greenland and adopt sled-dog units for exploration and combat. The example shows that adaptation can come from contact with another society as well as from simply occupying a biome.
Examples shown in the preview
- Hot, dry start: An Egyptian civilization develops mudbricks, camel herding and heat endurance.
- Climate shift: If the same region becomes more arid, humid or cold, earlier choices may become less useful.
- Snow-covered Egypt: A later demonstration required warmth, whaling and resource-preservation adaptations.
These examples come from a hands-on demonstration rather than a final rules manual. They establish the intended principle—that climate can invalidate a once-efficient plan—but not the exact thresholds, maintenance costs or replacement rules.

How to plan progression through all six eras
- Read the First Tale before settling. Match its resource, tile and citizen effects to a location that can sustain them, while noting exposure to future climate risk.
- Build an initial Customs plan. Select complementary bonuses instead of filling slots with unrelated advantages. Decide whether authority, water, desert survival, production or another revealed specialty is your immediate constraint.
- Track adaptation value. When your climate or settlement zone changes, reassess every environment-dependent benefit. A bonus that helped in heat may not justify its slot in snow or heavy humidity.
- Use exploration and diplomacy deliberately. Contact can unlock a foreign-contact route, while settlement patterns can make shared-land options available. These actions influence culture access, not just map knowledge.
- Prepare for the next Crossroads. Save culture points if a paid route would solve a known weakness. If continuity is strategically stronger, avoid spending simply because a new label is available.
- Choose the Legacy Trait with the next era in mind. The tree culminates in a trait that should support the civilization you expect to operate after the transition, not only the city that is strongest right now.
Continuity versus novelty: a decision framework
| Question | Favor continuity | Favor a new culture |
|---|---|---|
| Do current Customs fit the terrain? | Most bonuses still improve your dominant biome and economy | Climate or migration has made key adaptations obsolete |
| What is the cost? | You avoid a culture-point payment | You can afford the reported shared-land or higher foreign-contact cost |
| What identity do cities need? | Existing aesthetics and citizen roles already work | New aesthetics, roles or districts solve an urban-development problem |
| What is the long-term plan? | Your remaining Customs and Legacy Trait support the next era | The alternative tree offers a better route to your intended specialization |
| How much uncertainty can you accept? | Preserving a known plan reduces transition risk | You have explored enough to understand the new route’s likely value |
What is confirmed—and what is still unknown
HUMANKIND 2 remains in development. Amplitude’s 15 October 2026 gameplay announcement plans a PC release in 2027 and allows Steam wishlisting, but gives no final launch date. The public materials also do not establish the exact names of all six eras, turn thresholds, complete culture trees, numerical culture-point costs, balance values, multiplayer rules or physical editions.

That uncertainty matters when interpreting previews. “Free” Common History and the relative ordering of paid routes are reported from the hands-on demonstration; they should not be treated as immutable launch values. Likewise, the Egyptian, Thule and climate examples demonstrate the design direction without specifying every biome, adaptation or conversion rule that will ship.
The design goal behind the system
Game Director Benoit Humbert said the team wants every choice to shape the identity of the civilization, whether the player evolves culture, adapts to a new environment, builds relationships or takes an unexpected path. In practical terms, progression is meant to record a chain of decisions: a First Tale influences the opening, Customs specialize the society, Crossroads determine whether it remains continuous or branches, and adaptation keeps the result grounded in a changing world.
