Your cost to withdraw crypto depends on more than the blockchain’s network fee. The exchange may estimate or set a withdrawal charge, and the amount can vary by asset, network, account, location and timing. Compare the final quote for the exact route you plan to use—and confirm that the destination supports that network—before you send.

What makes up a crypto withdrawal cost?

A crypto withdrawal is a transfer from an exchange to an external wallet or another exchange. The amount charged at withdrawal may reflect the exchange’s estimate or set charge as well as network conditions. It should not automatically be treated as the exact fee the exchange will ultimately pay to the blockchain.

Coinbase says its estimated charge is based on prevailing network fees for a standalone wallet-to-wallet transfer; the final network cost can differ because the exchange may batch transactions or congestion may change. Binance likewise says its withdrawal amount is based on estimated network transaction fees and may fluctuate. Both providers direct users to the transaction flow for the applicable amount. Binance’s fee guidance is dated March 2, 2021 and warns that its information may be outdated, so use it for the variability principle, not as a live fee quote. Coinbase says applicable charges appear at transaction time in its crypto fee disclosures.

Charges that are not the withdrawal fee

Keep the transfer charge separate from other costs incurred along the way. Buying or converting into a different asset may involve a spread or transaction charge; converting back to fiat or withdrawing fiat can involve a separate payment-rail fee. Coinbase’s disclosures distinguish network charges from other charges, and the applicable fees depend on the product, transaction and region. Coinbase Exchange also publishes separate fiat withdrawal fees on its Exchange fees page. Those fiat charges are not crypto network withdrawal fees.

For example, Coinbase’s general crypto disclosure lists a 0.2% processing fee for Bitcoin sent via Lightning and a 0.01% processing fee on USDT withdrawals, capped at 20 USDT; it says a separate network fee also applies. These are product- and region-dependent details, not universal Coinbase rates. Check the transaction preview for your account and route.

Why network choice changes the comparison

The same asset may be withdrawable over more than one network, and each route can have different fees, minimums and operational status. A lower displayed charge is only useful if the receiving wallet or exchange accepts that asset on that specific network. Some destinations also require a memo or tag in addition to the address.

Binance’s support FAQ gives a direct warning: “DO NOT select the cheapest fee option. You must select the network that is compatible with the withdrawal address.” It says a wrong-network transfer may be lost and unrecoverable. Verify the receiving service’s deposit instructions independently before choosing a route; matching only the asset name or address format is not enough.

How to compare the real cost before sending

  1. Confirm the exact asset and destination. Identify the asset you are withdrawing and the wallet or exchange that will receive it. Open the recipient’s deposit instructions and confirm the supported network and any required memo or tag.
  2. Compare the same asset on the same network. If evaluating exchanges or routes, use like-for-like options. A fee for one network cannot fairly be compared with a fee for another without checking recipient support and any conversion costs.
  3. Check the current fee and minimum. Review the exchange’s withdrawal screen for that asset and network. Binance says both its fee and minimum vary by network. Kraken’s published withdrawal fee and minimum table was last updated December 31, 2025; Kraken says amounts can change, may differ from the table and that the final fee appears at confirmation.
  4. Calculate what arrives. Compare the amount you intend to send with the displayed charge and minimum. Check the net amount the recipient will receive, not just the fee headline. If a route requires converting assets first, include that conversion’s cost in your comparison.
  5. Check eligibility and operating status. Confirm that the asset and route are available for your country and account, and that withdrawals are currently enabled. A cheap route is not practical if it is unavailable, suspended or delayed.
  6. Review the final confirmation screen. Recheck the network, destination details, amount and fee immediately before confirming. Kraken specifically notes that the fee shown at confirmation is the final applicable fee and may differ from its published table.

Why there is no universally cheapest exchange

A meaningful exchange comparison requires the same asset, network, transfer amount, account region and timing. The sources cited here do not establish a standardized, same-time comparison across exchanges, so they cannot support a universal ranking. Published tables are useful reference points, but live quotes can differ by route and account, and a minimum withdrawal or unavailable route can change which option is practical.
