Computer-use AI agents can see a screen and operate it with a mouse and keyboard. They capture the current interface, reason about what it shows, then click, type, scroll or wait and repeat. That gives them practical write access to websites and desktop applications—not merely the ability to suggest commands. If the agent has permission to reach a file, account or payment page, a mistaken interpretation or malicious on-screen instruction can produce real consequences. The safe default is a constrained, disposable environment with minimal privileges, explicit approval before irreversible actions and independent verification afterward.
What a computer-use AI agent actually does
A computer-use agent is software that controls a graphical interface through a perception-action loop. Microsoft describes three recurring stages: perception captures the current screen, reasoning evaluates that state together with prior actions, and action performs an operation such as clicking, typing or scrolling. The loop continues until the task is complete or the agent asks for human input.
1. Perception: reading the current state
The agent receives a screenshot or another visual representation of the interface. It may identify buttons, text fields, menus, dialog boxes, icons and page content. Anthropic documents a tool that combines screenshot access with mouse and keyboard control; OpenAI describes browser sessions in which the agent observes the browser before deciding what to do next.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA screenshot is not the same as a trusted application state. Text visible in a webpage, document, image or notification is input supplied by someone else. It can be incomplete, stale, visually ambiguous or deliberately crafted to influence the model.

2. Reasoning: selecting the next operation
The model compares what it sees with the user’s goal and with earlier actions. It may infer that a button opens a file, that a form is ready for text or that a loading indicator means it should wait. Because the model is interpreting pixels and language rather than calling a narrowly defined API, the decision can be affected by layout changes, misleading labels, overlays or unexpected content.
3. Action: writing through the interface
The agent sends a click, keystroke, scroll, text entry or other supported input. This is the important distinction from a text-only chatbot: the output is not just advice. An action can create, edit, move or delete data; submit a form; change an account setting; transmit information; or trigger a purchase if the surrounding system permits it.
4. Repetition, waiting and stopping
After an action, the agent normally observes the updated screen and chooses another action. It may need to wait for a page to load, dismiss a dialog or recover from a changed layout. A session should have a clear completion condition, a time limit and a way for a person or supervisory system to stop it. Do not assume that the agent will always pause at the moment a human would want to review something.

How this differs from a chatbot or an API integration
A text chatbot can draft an email or explain a procedure, but it does not inherently have access to your desktop. A purpose-built API workflow usually sends structured requests to a defined service and can limit which operations are possible. A computer-use agent instead operates the same visible controls a person uses. That makes it useful when no specialized API exists, but it also exposes every permission available to the interactive session.
For example, an agent can open a document editor, locate a paragraph and replace it; navigate a support portal and fill a form; or move through a multi-step web application whose controls change as it loads. Those capabilities are convenient precisely because they are broad. A successful click is not proof that the intended object was selected, and a completed form is not proof that its contents were correct.

What can go wrong
Wrong target or wrong interpretation
An instruction such as “clean up the downloads folder” leaves important details unstated. The agent might select the wrong files, misunderstand a date or filename, or treat a similarly named account as the intended one. Microsoft warns that reliability varies by task and application, with complex graphical interfaces being less reliable. Ambiguity can therefore affect the device, personal data, connected accounts or enterprise systems.
Reduce this risk by specifying exact paths, filenames, account names and limits. Prefer a preview or proposed-action list before any bulk change. Make deletion, submission and account changes separate approval steps rather than implicit parts of a broad goal.

Screen content can contain instructions aimed at the agent rather than at you. A webpage might display text telling the agent to ignore its original task, reveal secrets or follow a link. The same pattern can appear in a document, image, advertisement or chat message. Anthropic describes the risk directly: “In some circumstances, Claude will follow commands found in content even when they conflict with your instructions.” Its research calls this a prompt injection attack, in which malicious instructions cause a model to override prior directions or perform unintended actions.
OpenAI guidance says to treat screen content as untrusted. The agent should regard visible instructions as data to inspect, not as authority to change its objective. In practice, combine that rule with isolation and approvals: do not let a page that can supply arbitrary text also gain an unreviewed path to passwords, payment details or sensitive files.
Interface drift, timing and loops
Websites and desktop applications change. A control can move, a custom widget can behave unlike a standard button, or a loading delay can make the agent act on an earlier screen. Unexpected dialogs, pop-ups and session-expiry messages can send the loop down the wrong path. The agent may repeat a click, type into the wrong field, loop without progress or stop while leaving a partial result.

Use short sessions and check the visible result after each consequential step. A maximum action count and a wall-clock timeout limit the damage from loops. If the interface changes, stop the run and restart from a known state instead of asking the agent to continue blindly.
Consequential writes
Purchases, financial transactions, data transmission, destructive edits and account changes are difficult to reverse. An agent can perform them when the session has the necessary permissions, even if the user expected only research or drafting. A confirmation request is helpful but not a complete safety mechanism: Microsoft states that clarification requests may not appear whenever a person would want a pause.
Require a human approval checkpoint immediately before the irreversible operation. Show the exact target, amount, recipients, files, terms or settings that will be affected. Approval should authorize one defined action, not an open-ended continuation of the session.
Overtrusting supervision
Watching a session is not the same as verifying it. Screens can update quickly, and a person may miss a subtle change in the selected account or destination. Supervision also cannot restore a secret that was already exposed. Treat monitoring as one layer alongside least privilege, allowlists, isolation, limits and post-action verification.
Can an agent delete files or make purchases?
It can if the operating system, browser profile or application grants the required access. The model does not need a special “delete” or “buy” capability; it can use the same controls a person would use. Whether the action succeeds depends on permissions, authentication, confirmation screens and the application’s design.

- File deletion: an agent with write access to a folder may select files and activate a delete control. A recycle bin or undo function may help, but neither is guaranteed, especially for network locations or applications that permanently remove data.
- Purchases: an agent may navigate to checkout and submit an order if payment details, an authenticated session and the final-submit control are available. A visible total or shipping address can still be wrong.
- Account changes: profile edits, permission changes, password resets and acceptance of terms can affect other people and connected services.
- Data transmission: uploading a file, pasting text into a form or sending a message can disclose information even when no local file is deleted.
Design the workflow so the agent can prepare a draft but cannot finalize it without a separate approval. For high-impact systems, use an account that lacks administrative, billing or production privileges.
How to sandbox a computer-use agent
Sandboxing means placing the agent in an environment whose data, network and permissions are deliberately narrower than those of your everyday computer. A dedicated browser profile, virtual machine or container can provide the boundary; the right choice depends on the applications the agent must use and the strength of isolation you require.
- Create a disposable workspace. Use a separate user account, browser profile, virtual machine or container. Keep personal documents, password-manager sessions and everyday cloud accounts outside it. For experiments, start from a clean snapshot so you can discard the environment after a run.
- Remove unnecessary privileges. Do not grant administrator or root access. Give the workspace access only to the folders and applications required for the task. Use separate, low-privilege service accounts for test systems.
- Constrain network destinations. Allowlist the sites or internal services the workflow needs. Block access to personal banking, production administration panels and unrelated domains. A browser allowlist is useful, but verify that redirects and embedded content cannot bypass it.
- Keep secrets out of reach. Do not preload passwords, payment cards, recovery codes or confidential files. If a secret is unavoidable, inject it at the narrowest possible step and prevent the agent from reading or copying it. Never paste a secret merely because a webpage requests it.
- Set action, time and cost limits. Cap the number of clicks or tool calls, session duration and any spend. Stop when the agent repeats an action, encounters an unexpected dialog or reaches a page outside the task.
- Define approval gates. Pause for human confirmation before deleting data, sending information, accepting legal terms, changing an account, publishing content or committing a payment. Present the exact action and its consequences at the gate.
- Provide a kill switch. Keep a way to terminate the agent, close the session and revoke its credentials. Test the stop procedure before running a real task; a control that exists only in documentation is not enough.
- Verify independently. Check the resulting file list, order details, recipients, account settings or server state through a trusted view. Review session logs, screenshots or saved activity, and compare the result with the original request.
Hosted browser, local desktop and API-driven workflows
These deployment patterns expose different boundaries. No option makes an agent automatically safe; the controls around the session determine what it can reach and what evidence you have afterward.
| Approach | Isolation and data location | Controls to configure | Distinct considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted browser agent | Runs in a provider-managed browser session rather than directly on your everyday desktop. | Session and event handling, site allowlists, approval gates, time and cost limits, result verification and logs. | OpenAI guidance emphasizes handling browser events and verifying the result; screen content remains untrusted. |
| Local desktop agent | Runs in an environment you control, such as a dedicated account, virtual machine or container. | OS permissions, application allowlists, network rules, secret handling, snapshots, supervision and a tested kill switch. | Microsoft emphasizes restricted environments and supervision because reliability varies across tasks and graphical interfaces. |
| API-driven workflow | Uses structured service calls instead of controlling a general graphical desktop. | Scoped credentials, endpoint allowlists, schema validation, transaction limits, approvals and audit logs. | It can reduce interface ambiguity, but it still needs safeguards for data transmission and irreversible operations. |
Anthropic’s client-side computer-use approach leaves storage under the application’s environment, so the application owner must secure that environment and its logs. For any architecture, ask whether the agent can reach financial, administrative or privileged accounts and whether you can cancel a run before its next action.
Reliability: what the available evidence does and does not show
Anthropic reported a 14.9% score for Claude 3.5 Sonnet on OSWorld in 2024, compared with a 70–75% human-performance comparison reported for the benchmark. Those figures are dated, vendor-reported benchmark results; they are not a guarantee for current models, your applications or arbitrary tasks. They also do not provide a general real-world failure rate. Microsoft likewise reports that reliability depends on the task and application, with complex graphical interfaces presenting greater difficulty.

Use benchmarks as context, not as permission to automate high-impact work without review. Test the exact workflow in a disposable environment, measure how often it reaches the intended state and keep a human in the loop for actions that cannot be safely undone.
Responding when an agent goes wrong
- Stop the session immediately. Use the kill switch, close the browser or suspend the virtual machine before investigating.
- Revoke exposed access. Sign out, rotate credentials and invalidate tokens if the agent may have viewed or transmitted them.
- Preserve evidence. Save logs, screenshots, timestamps, affected filenames, URLs and transaction identifiers before resetting a disposable environment.
- Check side effects. Review sent messages, uploads, orders, account settings, file changes and audit trails from an independent interface.
- Restore safely. Recover files from version history or backups, cancel transactions where possible and notify administrators or affected recipients.
- Narrow the workflow before retrying. Add an allowlist, remove a privilege, insert an approval gate or split the task into smaller steps. Do not simply rerun the same instructions.
When computer-use automation is appropriate
It is a reasonable fit for reversible, low-privilege tasks such as navigating a test site, collecting non-sensitive information, moving sample files inside a disposable workspace or preparing a draft for review. It is a poor default for unsupervised access to personal banking, production administration, confidential records, password stores or any workflow where a mistaken click creates legal, financial or safety consequences.
Before granting access, answer four questions: What exact interface must be controlled? Which data and accounts can it reach? What is the worst irreversible action? How will a person stop and independently verify the result? If those answers are not specific, reduce the scope until they are.
Bottom line
A computer-use AI agent is software that can see and write through a graphical interface. Its danger comes from combining imperfect visual reasoning with real permissions: a webpage can supply hostile instructions, a changed layout can redirect an action and a broad account can turn a small mistake into a purchase, disclosure or destructive edit. Run agents in constrained, disposable environments; keep secrets and privileged accounts out of reach; approve every irreversible step; and verify the actual outcome rather than trusting the agent’s report.
