The NFL has a leaguewide injury-report policy that separates practice participation from a player’s anticipated availability for the next game. College football has no single NCAA-wide weekly public football-report schedule established by the policies discussed here: some conferences and the College Football Playoff set their own availability-report rules. The governing policy determines which games are covered, when reports appear and what each label means.
Why NFL and college football reports work differently
The NFL’s Personnel (Injury) Report Policy applies to its clubs leaguewide. It calls for practice reports during the week and a separate game-status report. The practice report describes injury status and practice participation; the game-status report describes a player’s anticipated availability for the next game. Those are related but distinct kinds of information.
In college football, public reporting is policy-dependent. A conference may require availability reports for games between its members, while the CFP has a policy for playoff games. These examples do not establish a common schedule for every NCAA football team or every game. The NCAA football playing-rules resource is not itself a weekly public player-availability policy; an NCAA announcement about a 2026 March Madness availability-report pilot concerns Division I basketball, not a football reporting requirement.
At a glance: what differs
| Question | NFL | College football examples |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the rule? | The NFL’s Personnel (Injury) Report Policy applies to clubs leaguewide. | A conference or the CFP may set a policy for its specified competitions. |
| What is reported? | Practice participation and anticipated game availability appear in separate report functions. | Policies generally provide availability designations for covered contests; a practice log is not necessarily part of the process. |
| Which games are covered? | Leaguewide club reporting. | Scope varies: examples include conference games or CFP games, not necessarily every game a team plays. |
| When do reports appear? | Practice-report timing and the separate game-status deadline follow an NFL schedule keyed to the game day. | Timing varies by policy. Some examples begin three days before a game and require a final report 90 minutes before kickoff or game time. |
| Do labels mean the same thing? | Use the NFL policy’s definitions. | No. Conference and CFP policies define their own designations, and the CFP changes its label set on game day. |
How the NFL schedule works
Under the NFL Football Operations schedule reviewed October 4, 2026, practice reports are due by 4 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice. The reporting days depend on the club’s scheduled game day. The game-status report has its own deadline, also keyed to the game day; the NFL schedule requires a further update if a player’s condition changes after the initial status report.
#1 Best Overall
That distinction matters when reading a report: participation describes what happened in practice, while game status is an outlook for the upcoming game. The exact deadline should be checked against the NFL’s current schedule rather than inferred from a college policy or a generic weekly pattern.
How college reporting varies by policy
SEC: conference games
The SEC announced public availability reports for conference games beginning with the 2024 football season. For a Saturday game, the schedule starts three days before kickoff, includes daily updates and ends with a final report 90 minutes before kickoff. When a conference game is played on a different day, the corresponding reporting days shift with it. This is an SEC conference-game process, not a blanket reporting rule for all games played by SEC teams.

Big Ten: conference-opponent competition in 2026
For the 2026 season, the Big Ten announced a process of four reports per week, beginning three days before the contest and concluding with a game-day report. The stated scope is competition against conference opponents. Do not assume that this 2026 process governs a Big Ten team’s nonconference games or later seasons without checking the applicable policy.
Big 12: conference games
The Big 12 policy published August 21, 2025 covers conference football games. It calls for updates over the days before a game and a final report 90 minutes before kickoff. Its definition of availability can encompass reasons beyond injury, including illness, suspension, eligibility, legal issues or personal matters. A designation therefore should not automatically be treated as a medical diagnosis.

CFP: playoff games
For the 2025–26 season, CFP-participating schools must provide public availability reports for each playoff game. Reports begin three days before a game, update daily and conclude with a final report 90 minutes before game time. This policy applies to CFP games, not a team’s entire regular season.
How to interpret labels and deadlines
- First identify the competition. Determine whether the game is governed by an NFL, conference or CFP policy. A conference policy may cover only conference games.
- Check the season and latest update. Policies and schedules can change; use the rule in effect for that season and note whether you are looking at an interim or final report.
- Read the policy’s definitions. A label from one conference is not automatically equivalent to an NFL or CFP label. In particular, the CFP uses one set of designations before game day and another on game day.
- Do not equate availability with a diagnosis. Some college policies explicitly include non-injury reasons a player might be unavailable.
Under the CFP’s 2025–26 policy, the pre-game labels are available, probable, questionable, doubtful and out. On game day, the labels are available, game time decision and out. Those terms belong to that CFP policy; they should not be substituted for NFL or conference definitions.

Where to check before relying on a report
Start with the official policy-maker’s current-season rules: NFL Football Operations for NFL clubs, the relevant conference for a conference-game report, or the CFP for a playoff game. Confirm the report’s scope and timestamp as well as its label. If no applicable public-reporting policy requires a report for that contest, the absence of one does not by itself establish that a team has no injured players.
