Start with the specific game and the country where you’ll watch it. Find the event’s authorized broadcaster there, then check whether your existing subscription works in that country and whether a blackout applies. If it won’t show the game, compare an eligible international or travel package with the licensed local option. Paying for an account, logging in successfully, or owning a streaming device does not by itself give you the right to watch a particular feed.
Availability and provider terms can change. This guide reflects official guidance available through October 31, 2026; confirm the event, country, restrictions, device support and current terms before paying.
What should you check before you travel?
Sports streaming rights are tied to the event and the territory where it is watched. A service that carries a league at home may not carry the same game abroad, and a subscription that works in one country does not necessarily grant access in another. Check the exact fixture rather than relying on a league-wide claim or the name of a streaming app.

Rights can differ between games in the same league, so “I have a league subscription” is not enough to identify the right feed.
- Find the destination’s authorized broadcaster. Consult the league or competition’s official country-specific viewing information, then confirm that broadcaster lists the exact event. The NFL’s guidance for a London game, for example, names Sky Sports and NFL Game Pass on DAZN, while warning that availability varies by location and broadcast restrictions. That example is not a guide to every NFL game or country.
- Check your existing account’s travel terms. Look for the destination country, temporary-travel rules, residency or purchase-country limits, and whether live events are included there. Distinguish being able to sign in from being entitled to watch that event.
- Check the event’s blackout conditions. A game can be blacked out even when the account and app are otherwise valid. Read the league or provider’s event-specific guidance and look for the listed local or regional broadcaster.
- Confirm device support and location settings. Check that the official app supports the device you plan to use and follow its normal location-access instructions. ESPN says location access is required to access its service; denying it may prevent access, but changing or falsifying location is not a legitimate workaround.
- Compare the complete cost before buying. Check whether the package covers this event live or only as a replay, whether you qualify to subscribe, what country it permits, and the total current charge. There is no established universal cheapest service for travelers.
Which viewing option should you use?
Choose based on the exact event and your eligibility, not on which app you already have installed. These options solve different problems; none is a universal winner.

For any option, check whether it covers the event rather than just the competition in general. If a package’s public information does not establish your eligibility or the game’s availability, contact the provider or rights holder before purchasing instead of assuming the subscription will work.
Can you use a subscription from home while abroad?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on the provider, destination, type of trip and event. A paid subscription may be portable under a specific rule or provider policy; it may also be restricted, or may work for some content while a particular live game remains unavailable.
Temporary travel between EU countries
EU paid-content portability has a defined scope. Under Your Europe’s guidance, a subscriber who is temporarily travelling to another EU member state can access eligible paid online content, including sports events, under the same conditions as at home. The guidance states: “The same rules apply to all your paid subscriptions for other online content, such as e-books, games, music and sports events.” The context matters: this is temporary travel within the EU, not a worldwide rule.

Free services are not required to provide the same cross-border access. The rule also does not make a person resident in another country eligible to register as a local subscriber there. Your Europe’s FAQ distinguishes a temporary visit from a longer move and explains that an Estonian resident cannot demand to register for a Spanish service merely because a Spanish subscriber can watch during a temporary holiday in Estonia.
Travel outside that EU scope
Do not assume EU portability follows you to a non-EU destination, or that another country has an equivalent rule. Check the service’s own terms for the country you are visiting. For example, the NBA says League Pass works in any supported country regardless of where it was purchased, but “supported country” and game blackout restrictions still matter.

Moving is not the same as taking a trip
Temporary travel and permanent relocation can be treated differently by both law and provider terms. If you are moving, check the service’s residency, billing-country and account rules for the new country instead of relying on a travel allowance. A portability rule should not be read as a right to open an account as a resident somewhere else.
Why can a paid stream still be blacked out?
A subscription can include a league without including every live broadcast in every location. Blackouts are event- and location-dependent restrictions, and payment does not automatically override them.

The NBA says its League Pass blackout restrictions are based on the accessing device’s location. Its guidance, updated October 29, 2026, says live restrictions apply in the United States and Canada. When a game is blacked out, the NBA lists alternative regional or national broadcasters; check those listings for that specific game rather than assuming another device will unlock League Pass.
ESPN likewise describes event blackouts based on location. If a service displays a blackout message, identify whether the issue is the game’s broadcast rights in that territory, your travel eligibility, or a location check. Then consult the provider’s explanation and the authorized broadcaster for the destination. Switching hardware does not change the rights attached to the event.
What do the NBA and NFL travel rules mean in practice?
League-specific examples show why “available abroad” needs qualification. A package may work in supported countries while excluding some territories, and a separate blackout can still restrict a particular live game.

NBA League Pass
The NBA’s October 2026 travel guidance says: “You can use League Pass in any supported country, regardless of where you purchased.” This describes use in supported countries; it does not promise that every game is live everywhere. The NBA’s blackout guidance identifies restrictions in the United States and Canada and says they depend on the accessing device’s location. Check the NBA’s game-specific broadcaster information when a live game is blacked out.
Device compatibility is a separate question from viewing rights. The NBA lists Amazon Fire Stick as a supported device for its app. That can help with playback on a compatible television, but it does not expand a package’s country coverage or remove an event blackout.
NFL products for international viewers and travelers
NFL+ live access is identified in NFL guidance as U.S.-only. For international viewers, the NFL points to NFL Game Pass International through DAZN. DAZN separately describes NFL Travel Pass for U.S. customers travelling outside the United States, Canada and China. The products are distinct, so verify which one you qualify for before buying.
DAZN’s Game Pass portability guidance also lists exceptions, including the United States, Canada and China. Its published NFL Travel Pass page states availability in more than 200 countries and territories; that is DAZN’s stated reach for that particular product, not a guarantee that every event or service is available in every destination. Check the event’s local availability and the product’s current eligibility terms.
Should you use a VPN or another location-changing tool?
Do not use location spoofing to claim a stream you are not entitled to watch. Provider terms can prohibit using a VPN to evade territorial restrictions, but that is different from saying every VPN use is unlawful in every place or under every service’s rules.

UEFA.tv’s terms prohibit technology intended to obtain content that would otherwise be unavailable at the viewer’s location. DAZN says using a VPN to register for NFL Game Pass International from another country violates its terms. Those are provider-specific statements. The practical choice is to use the authorized service for your actual location, or find a package whose stated terms cover your trip.
If the official app requests location access, follow the provider’s instructions and check that the device’s location setting is available. ESPN says access to its service requires location access on the device. A location error is a reason to check settings or contact support, not to falsify the device’s location.
What should you do if the stream is unavailable at your destination?
First diagnose the reason for the message; then choose a permitted alternative. A travel restriction, event blackout, unsupported country and device-location failure are different issues and have different remedies.
- Read the exact error. Note whether the service says the country is unsupported, the event is blacked out, the account is ineligible, or location access is missing.
- Check the provider’s explanation for that event and country. Do not infer that a service-wide subscription includes the live feed everywhere. DAZN’s guidance, for example, distinguishes logging in abroad from entitlement to particular globally or locally licensed content.
- Check the official local rights listing. If the event is blacked out, look for the league’s regional or national broadcaster information. For an NBA game in the United States or Canada, the NBA lists alternative carriers for blacked-out games.
- Compare eligible alternatives. Consider the licensed destination broadcaster, a legitimate league international package, or a travel-specific pass if you qualify. Confirm coverage of the exact event, country and residency requirements, live versus replay availability, blackouts, compatible devices and total current price.
- Contact the provider before paying again. Ask whether the issue is an account entitlement, territory restriction, event blackout or technical location check. Keep the provider’s answer and the event listing available if you need to resolve a billing or access issue.
If no official source confirms that a package carries the event where you are, do not treat a successful purchase or app installation as confirmation. Rights and terms can vary by event and change over time.

No. A compatible device enables playback through an app; it does not grant event rights, change the country where a game is being watched, or cancel a blackout. The NBA’s supported-device information includes Amazon Fire Stick, but the NBA’s country and blackout restrictions still apply to League Pass.

Before departure, install or update the official app on the device you plan to use, confirm that the service lists it as supported, and check that you can access your account. If you plan to connect a device to a hotel or rental television, confirm that the screen has a compatible input and that the network permits streaming. Those practical steps prepare the playback setup; they do not replace checking the event’s authorized feed.
When should you recheck availability?
Recheck close to the event, especially before buying a new subscription. The official information available as of October 31, 2026 does not establish a permanent rights map, price or blackout status for every future game. A listing for one event, country or season should not be extended to another.
- Confirm the exact event and destination broadcaster.
- Revisit your provider’s travel, country and account eligibility terms.
- Check the event’s blackout status and whether the alternative is live or replay.
- Verify current device support, location requirements and total price.
- For temporary travel within the EU, confirm that your case falls within the paid-content portability rule; do not apply it to a move or travel outside its scope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate subscription for every country I visit?
Not necessarily: an existing paid service may permit temporary access, and a qualifying EU-to-EU trip has a specific portability rule. Outside that scope, the answer depends on the provider’s terms and the event’s local rights, so check before purchasing another account.

Replay availability is a separate entitlement from live access and can also vary by country or package. Check the event page and the provider’s terms for replay timing and destination restrictions before relying on an on-demand recording.
Is it legal to use a VPN for sports streaming?
The provider examples here establish particular terms, not a universal legal rule for all VPN use. UEFA.tv prohibits VPN use intended to access otherwise unavailable content, and DAZN says VPN-based cross-country registration for NFL Game Pass International breaches its terms; check the service’s current rules and the law where you are.
