A detector score or a writing-style impression may be a reason to investigate, but neither proves authorship. Check the article’s claims, publisher and byline, and any available provenance or AI-use disclosure. Treat missing metadata as unknown—not evidence that a person wrote it.
Start by checking whether the article is reliable
Authorship and accuracy are separate questions. A human-written article can contain errors, and an AI-generated article can include correct information. To assess reliability, follow important citations to original documents, datasets or named experts. Check whether quotations and statistics retain their context, whether the information is current, and whether independent reputable sources corroborate the central claims.
- Prefer the original source over another article repeating the same claim.
- Check publication and update dates, especially for changing products, policies or events.
- Look for corrections or context that materially changes how a claim should be understood.
What can the byline and publisher tell you?
Look for an author biography, a consistent publication history, editorial contact information, a corrections policy and a disclosure explaining how the publisher uses AI. These details can help you judge the publisher’s transparency and accountability. They are contextual clues, not forensic proof: a byline does not establish that a person wrote every sentence, and an AI disclosure may describe assistance rather than full generation.
Why AI detectors cannot establish authorship
Detectors estimate whether text resembles examples their models associate with AI-generated writing. Their output depends on the detector, text length and genre, language, model coverage, and whether the text has been edited. A score is not a verified record of who wrote an article.

OpenAI’s now-discontinued classifier illustrates the limits. In its January 2023 evaluation on a specific English challenge set, it identified 26% of AI-written text as “likely AI-written” and incorrectly labeled human-written text as AI-written 9% of the time. OpenAI discontinued the classifier on July 20, 2023, citing its low accuracy. Those figures describe that classifier and evaluation—not current detectors as a group. OpenAI also warned that the classifier was very unreliable on text under 1,000 characters, performed significantly worse outside English, was unreliable on code, and could be evaded through editing. It said the tool should not be used as a primary decision-making tool (OpenAI’s classifier announcement).
Tool guidance is also specific to each product. Turnitin says its AI-writing report covers qualifying text identified as likely AI-generated or as AI-generated and then modified with an AI paraphrasing tool. Its guidance warns that it does not reliably detect some non-prose material, including code, poetry, scripts, bullet points, tables and annotated bibliographies. Turnitin does not display a numerical score for results below 20%, citing false-positive concerns. That is a product-specific reporting choice; it does not mean a score above 20% proves AI authorship or establish a threshold for other detectors (Turnitin’s AI-writing detection guide).
If you choose to use a detector
- Check whether the vendor supports the article’s language, length and genre.
- Read how the tool defines its score and handles false positives.
- Look for the evaluation conditions: which text types, AI systems and editing methods were tested?
- Compare tools only on the same text and under comparable conditions; differences in scores are not proof that one result is correct.
- Do not use a score alone to accuse an author or make a consequential decision.
The European Commission’s 2026 report identifies effectiveness, robustness, reliability, accessibility and interoperability as considerations for techniques that mark or detect AI-generated text. A result that works for one kind of text may not hold after editing, across languages or with other providers; readers may also have no practical way to verify how a detector reached its conclusion (European Commission report on marking and labelling AI-generated content).
What provenance records can—and cannot—show
When available, provenance information can offer evidence about a digital file’s recorded origin or history. The C2PA Content Credentials standard uses a manifest that compatible applications can check for integrity and validation. A validated credential can support claims about that file’s recorded history, but it is not a fact-check and does not guarantee that every statement in an article is accurate or was authored as represented (C2PA: How it works).

Credentials are optional. C2PA says an asset without one should not therefore be universally distrusted (C2PA’s explanation of optional credentials). A credential may also refer to an image or other media file rather than the article’s text, and copying or processing a file may remove its metadata. If no supported credential is found, the conclusion is only that no supported credential was found.
Watermarking is another proposed signal, but it has its own limitations. In a 2024 discussion, OpenAI said its studied text-watermarking method could withstand localized changes such as paraphrasing, but was less robust to global changes such as translation, rewriting with another generative model or deleting inserted characters. The company also raised the possibility of disproportionate effects on non-native English speakers and said it was exploring text metadata approaches. These observations concern OpenAI’s reported work and considerations; they do not describe every watermarking method (OpenAI on identifying AI-generated text and media).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not ask ChatGPT to identify its own past writing
Asking ChatGPT whether it wrote a passage is not a forensic test. OpenAI says ChatGPT has no knowledge of whether it generated a particular text and may make up an answer. A “yes” or “no” response therefore cannot verify authorship (OpenAI Help Center: Can I ask ChatGPT if it wrote something?).
Quick Recap
A practical way to reach a careful conclusion
- Verify the article’s important claims. Follow citations to primary material, check dates and context, and seek independent corroboration.
- Assess the publisher’s accountability. Review the byline, author information, editorial contacts, correction practices and any AI-use disclosure.
- Check for relevant provenance. If a credential is present, establish which file and history it describes; do not assume it covers the article text.
- Use a detector only as a weak signal. Confirm that the tool supports the text’s language, length and format, then interpret its result according to the vendor’s stated scope and limitations.
- State only what the evidence supports. You may be able to judge whether the article is well-supported or whether the publisher disclosed AI assistance. Without reliable, relevant records, you may not be able to determine who wrote the text.
