These are useful general habits, not universal cutoffs: dose, meal size, and individual response matter.
How long before bed should you stop drinking coffee?
Try moving coffee and other caffeinated drinks earlier in the day, especially if you notice they make it harder to sleep. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) says caffeine’s effects can last up to eight hours. The NHS advises avoiding tea and coffee for at least six hours before bed. The eight-hour and six-hour recommendations are practical guidance, not a guarantee that caffeine will or will not affect a particular person.
Study findings help explain why a single precise cutoff is difficult to set:
- Controlled study: In a 2013 report, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) described a study of 12 healthy normal sleepers. A 400 mg dose of caffeine taken at bedtime or three or six hours beforehand disrupted sleep; objectively measured total sleep time fell by more than an hour even when participants took caffeine six hours before bed. This result applies to the tested dose and small study group, not every dose or person. AASM’s study report
- Observational study: NHLBI summarized the Jackson Heart Sleep Study, which examined diary and sensor data across 5,164 days and nights from 785 participants. Caffeine consumed within four hours of bedtime was not associated with the measured sleep parameters. The study did not capture caffeine dose or individual differences in sensitivity and tolerance. NHLBI’s summary
The studies measured different things in different ways: one tested a set dose at specific intervals in a small controlled group, while the other observed participants without capturing dose or sensitivity. Neither establishes a universal personal cutoff.

Does alcohol help you sleep?
Alcohol may make you feel drowsy or help you fall asleep, but it is not a reliable sleep aid. It can leave sleep lighter and contribute to waking during the night as its sedating effects wear off. Avoid using alcohol to help you sleep, and avoid drinking close to bedtime. See NHLBI guidance on healthy sleep habits and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism’s alcohol and sleep information.
Is it bad to eat a big meal late at night?
A large or heavy meal near bedtime can cause indigestion that interferes with sleep, according to NIH Healthy Sleep guidance. NHLBI advises avoiding heavy or large meals within a few hours of bedtime, while noting that a light snack is okay. The guidance does not define one meal-timing cutoff that works for everyone, so focus on meal size and whether late eating causes discomfort.

How to find your own patterns
A brief sleep diary can help you notice whether caffeine, alcohol, or late meals coincide with restless nights. The CDC suggests recording bedtime, waking during the night, and use of alcohol or caffeinated drinks. Track these details for one to two weeks, along with meal timing or size if relevant. A diary can help you discuss sleep habits with a provider; it does not diagnose a sleep disorder.
If sleep problems regularly affect your daily life, talk with a healthcare provider. Changing when you eat or drink may help identify habits that matter to you, but it does not diagnose or resolve an underlying sleep disorder.
