College football backup quarterbacks prepare throughout the week as if they may be called into the game. That means keeping up with the team’s film and game plan, learning what the offense expects from every position, and being ready to lead the unit—not simply memorizing a few plays. The exact practice duties vary by program.
How does a backup quarterback prepare during the week?
The backup stays connected to the same opponent and offensive plan as the starter, even when it is uncertain whether he will play. Tyler Mizzell of Ball State said in a September 28, 2026 news conference that he used the same preparation approach through the season’s first five weeks, including watching film and executing the game plan. He described the expectation this way: “As the backup quarterback at the start of the season, you’re asked to prepare like the starter even though you might not get the opportunity to play.” Ball State’s September 28, 2026 news conference quotes
Film and meetings align the quarterback room
At Lehigh, backup Holden Nagin said the quarterbacks reviewed the same film at the same time: “We’re almost always doing the exact same thing, looking at the same exact film at the exact same time.” Shared preparation helps a backup follow the same opponent tendencies and weekly plan as the starter. The Brown and White’s October 3, 2026 account
Practice work can include simulating the opponent
Nagin also described a specific Lehigh assignment: he ran the opponent’s plays against the first-team defense while the starter worked with the offense. This gave him a way to participate in practice and prepare for the opponent without taking the starter’s offensive repetitions. It is an example of one team’s routine, not a standard assignment for every college program.

What must a backup know beyond the play call?
A quarterback has to understand the situation well enough to make decisions and communicate them under pressure. Lehigh backup Patrick Coan described the mental work as “knowing coverages and all that stuff.” That includes learning what the defense is showing and how it changes before or after the snap, rather than relying on a memorized sequence alone. The Brown and White’s October 3, 2026 account
Nagin added that a backup needs to know the responsibilities of other offensive positions so he can direct a play. If he enters, he must be able to communicate with teammates who have been preparing for the same plan, not just recall his own assignment.

How do practice roles and competition differ?
Programs can divide repetitions differently. A backup might work with the offense, simulate the opponent for the defense, or have other duties; the Lehigh example shows one possible arrangement, not a universal template. The accounts cited here do not establish a general policy for how teams divide first-team offensive reps or announce a depth-chart change.
Being a backup also involves accepting the current role while continuing to compete. Lehigh offensive coordinator Dan Hunt said: “The best ones understand their role as being the backup quarterback, but they are not satisfied with it, and they are going to push every day to show they should be the starter.” That balance keeps a quarterback invested in the team’s weekly work while pursuing the starting job. What changes when the backup is named the starter?
Preparation shifts from being ready for a possible appearance to leading the offense as the designated starter. The Ball State account describes Mizzell’s preparation before his starting debut, including film study and execution of the game plan, but the available accounts do not establish a standard transition process across college teams. Coaches and programs may handle the change and communicate it differently.
An older Texas Longhorns game-week document from September 2021 provides a historical example of the demands involved in a first start, including attention to film, reads and protection. It is not current guidance about Texas’s present quarterback practices. Texas Football: Texas Tech Game Week Quotes
