When Asian Games teams tie on gold medals, the usual standings convention compares silver medals next, then bronze medals. Total medals are a separate measure: a team with more medals overall does not automatically rank higher if it has fewer golds. The accessible Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) materials show gold-led rankings but do not explicitly spell out the complete tie-break sequence, so silver-then-bronze is best described as the convention used in published tables—not as a quoted OCA regulation.

What breaks a tie on gold medals?

Compare the tied teams’ silver-medal counts. If those are also equal, compare bronze medals. In practical terms, the usual ordering is gold, then silver, then bronze. If all three counts are equal, a standings publisher may display the teams at the same rank.

The OCA’s Host City Asian Summer Games Guidelines identify gold with first place, silver with second, and bronze with third in the context of event medals and ceremonies. That supports the medal hierarchy, but it is not an explicit rule for ranking national Olympic committees (NOCs) in a medal table. The accessible OCA material located here does not state the full silver-then-bronze tie-break sequence. Read the OCA Host City Asian Summer Games Guidelines.

Does the total medal count decide the ranking?

No. The medal-table rank and a ranking by total medals are distinct views. The OCA-hosted standings page includes separate columns for “RK” and “Rk by TOTAL,” alongside the gold, silver, bronze, and total counts. See the OCA-hosted medal standings.

An OCA Annual Report 2025 table for the Bahrain 3rd Asian Youth Games illustrates why the distinction matters:

Team Gold Silver Bronze Total Table rank
Uzbekistan 37 16 28 81 2
Kazakhstan 24 29 40 93 3

Kazakhstan had 93 medals to Uzbekistan’s 81, but Uzbekistan ranked higher because it had more golds. This is an Asian Youth Games example from an OCA report, not a senior Asian Games tie case. See the OCA Annual Report 2025.

What happens when every medal count is equal?

A published standings report may show a shared rank. Yonhap News Agency’s Aichi-Nagoya 2026 standings report listed Myanmar and Uzbekistan jointly at rank 9, with each team on one gold, one silver, one bronze, and three medals total. This shows how that report displayed an exact tie; it does not establish a universal OCA rule for every edition or publisher. See Yonhap’s Aichi-Nagoya 2026 standings report.

How to read a specific Asian Games table

  1. Check the rank column. It reflects the table publisher’s medal-table ordering.
  2. Compare golds first. A larger total-medal count does not override a gold advantage in the usual gold-led ranking.
  3. If golds match, compare silver and then bronze. Treat this as the established convention visible in published standings, rather than attributing the full sequence to an explicit OCA regulation.
  4. Look for a separate total-rank column. If the table provides one, it ranks teams by combined medals rather than medal color.
  5. For a particular edition, use its official standings. Results and medal totals can change if event results are revised.
