Resistance can diminish as a phone ages or is damaged, and liquid damage is excluded from Apple’s one-year limited warranty. If a repair is needed, choose among Apple, an Apple-authorized or independent provider, and Self Service Repair according to your model, location and repair experience.
How Apple tests iPhone durability
Apple describes durability testing as a continuing part of product development, not a single drop test at the end. Its 2025 Environmental Progress Report says the Reliability Testing Lab evaluates designs throughout development, from early prototypes through launch. Apple says it tests tens of thousands of prototype devices every year, a figure reported in 2024.
Tests simulate exposures and stresses a phone might encounter, including liquids, foods, skincare products, intense ultraviolet light, abrasives, vibration, strain from sitting on a device and accidental drops. Apple says its water tests use a swing-arm nozzle for IPX3/IPX4 spray or splash conditions and a pressurized vessel for IPX7/IPX8 immersion conditions. These are controlled tests of designs; they do not establish how a particular, aged or damaged phone will fare in a real-world incident.
In its June 2024 Longevity by Design paper, Apple said improved liquid-ingress protection decreased repair rates by 75% for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The same paper notes a trade-off: adhesives, seals and gaskets can make repairs more complex. Apple says it considers the longevity benefit worth that added complexity.

What an iPhone water-resistance rating means
Water resistance is not the same as being waterproof. An IP rating describes performance under defined laboratory conditions, not an assurance that a phone will remain sealed indefinitely. Apple Support says the iPhone models listed on its water-resistance support page were tested under controlled laboratory conditions and warns that resistance may decrease with normal wear or impacts.

Those figures are examples from Apple’s 2023 report, not a complete or current rating list. Check Apple Support’s model-specific information for the rating of a particular iPhone; do not infer one model’s rating from another’s.

Apple advises against swimming or bathing with an iPhone, exposing it to pressurized or high-velocity water, using it in a sauna or steam room, intentionally submerging it, or disassembling it. A rating should not be treated as permission to put the device through these conditions.
Does Apple’s warranty cover liquid damage?
No. Apple states that “Service for liquid damage isn’t covered by the Apple One-Year Limited Warranty.” That exclusion is separate from the laboratory rating: a phone can have a published resistance rating and still sustain liquid damage that the limited warranty does not cover.

Apple says liquid-contact indicators are normally white or silver and turn fully red after contact with water or a water-containing liquid. Apple also says normal humidity and temperature within the device’s environmental requirements do not activate them. The indicator is one part of Apple’s service assessment; its color alone does not establish every detail of a device’s condition or available repair options.
Choose a repair route that fits the job
Apple identifies four main service routes. Availability, pricing and the work a provider can perform vary by location, device and repair. Ask what parts and procedures will be used, what warranty the repair carries, and whether the specific fault can be addressed before handing over the phone.

Apple says genuine parts are designed and tested for safety, security and performance. Used genuine parts may perform similarly, but prior use or modification can create unknown variation in quality. Apple says repairs using used parts are not covered by Apple warranty or AppleCare.

Self Service Repair and a third-party toolkit are not interchangeable. Apple’s self-service route is intended for people experienced with complex electronic repair and is limited to eligible models and countries. A general-purpose toolkit can help with a repair, but it does not provide model-specific instructions, guarantee compatible parts, or restore the factory seal.

- Consider battery safety and repair complexity. Battery work and delicate internal components demand appropriate parts, tools and experience. If you are not equipped for the job, use a repair provider rather than improvising.
- Account for the seal. Opening the phone can affect its seals and water resistance. Do not assume a third-party kit or replacement adhesive restores the original performance.
- Check parts and service terms. Confirm compatibility and understand the provider’s warranty. A DIY repair or third-party part does not promise Apple warranty coverage or factory water resistance.
