Android biometrics do not impose one universal rule for opening every saved password. An app or credential provider requests an Android authentication prompt, chooses which authentication methods it accepts, and decides what action follows a successful check. If fingerprint or face authentication fails, the prompt may allow another attempt, offer your device PIN, pattern, or password, or provide a different sign-in route—but that fallback is not guaranteed in every app.
What Android biometrics do when you open a saved password
Android’s BiometricPrompt is a system dialog that an app can invoke to request authentication. It is a gate to an app-controlled action, not the password store itself. A successful biometric check allows the app or credential provider to continue its flow; the system prompt does not by itself determine which saved password appears or how the provider stores it.
Android’s identity guidance recommends Credential Manager for initial sign-in on a device. For later reauthorization, an app can use BiometricPrompt or Credential Manager. So the experience of viewing or using a saved password depends on the particular app, credential provider, and Android version.
Whether you can use your PIN depends on the app’s settings
Android treats biometric authentication and the device’s screen-lock credential as distinct authenticator choices. Depending on what the app configures, it may accept strong biometrics, weak biometrics, the device credential, or a supported combination. A device-credential fallback means your phone’s PIN, pattern, or password; it does not mean every app must offer that option.

Developers configure accepted authenticators and fallback behavior. Android 10 and older do not support some combinations involving the device credential, which can affect what an app can offer. The BiometricPrompt.Builder API documents how device-credential fallback is configured. If you do not see a PIN, pattern, or password option, follow the alternative shown by the app rather than assuming Android will provide one.
Why fingerprint or face authentication can fail
A failed biometric request can mean more than an incorrect fingerprint or face match. Android distinguishes several conditions in its BiometricPrompt API:

- No biometric is enrolled: The device has no enrolled biometric that meets the app’s requirements. If the app supports it, you may be able to enroll one in Android settings or use another offered route.
- Hardware is unavailable: The required biometric hardware cannot be used at that moment.
- The sensor cannot process the sample: The system could not process the image or input. This is a distinct error, not necessarily a bad match.
- The request timed out: The authentication operation did not complete within the allowed time.
- You canceled the prompt: Canceling ends that authentication request. Android’s guidance says apps should provide an alternate authentication route and a way to return to biometrics.
- Biometric lockout: Repeated failed attempts can temporarily or permanently disable biometric authentication, as described below.
For a hardware, processing, or timeout error, retry if the app permits it or choose the alternative it presents. The error category matters: not every problem is solved by repeatedly placing a finger on the sensor.
What happens after too many failed attempts
Android’s API documents a temporary lockout after five failed biometric attempts: biometric authentication is unavailable for 30 seconds. If the device enters permanent lockout, biometrics remain disabled until you unlock with strong device authentication—your PIN, pattern, or password. These are platform API conditions; individual password managers can differ in the wording and steps they show.

If a biometric prompt reports lockout, use the device credential when the app or system offers it. After a permanent lockout, unlock the device with that strong credential before trying biometrics again. If the app does not show a device-credential route, use its stated alternative.
How saved-password prompts relate to Google Password Manager
On Android 13 and earlier, when Google is designated as the Autofill provider, a password-save prompt may come from Autofill and save the credential into Google Password Manager. Android’s Credential Manager troubleshooting guidance also says credentials saved with Google Autofill sync bidirectionally with Credential Manager. This describes that Google provider and version scenario, not every credential provider or every saved-password prompt.

What to do when the prompt will not let you in
- Read the prompt’s message. Check whether it indicates no enrolled biometric, unavailable hardware, a timeout, cancellation, or lockout; those states have different causes.
- Use the route the app offers. If there is an option for device credentials, enter the phone’s PIN, pattern, or password. If not, use the app’s other sign-in or recovery option.
- For a temporary lockout, wait 30 seconds. Android documents that duration after five failed attempts; avoid continuing to retry during the lockout.
- For permanent lockout, unlock the phone with its strong credential. Then retry biometrics if the app allows it.
- If no biometric is enrolled, check the app’s accepted methods. Enroll an eligible biometric only if the app supports that route; otherwise continue with the alternative it provides.
Android defines the available authentication states and developer options, but it does not establish one universal password-manager design or a single way that all providers store or encrypt saved passwords. Treat the app’s own prompt and recovery instructions as authoritative for its specific flow.
