Android banking malware can steal login details by tricking someone into installing a fake app, displaying a counterfeit bank sign-in screen, or abusing Accessibility access to read screen content and interact with other apps. Depending on the malware, it may also capture a PIN or SMS verification code—and some can use stolen access to operate inside a banking app. The methods vary by malware family and campaign; an infected phone is not necessarily affected in every one of these ways.
How does Android banking malware get onto a phone?
Often, the first step is social engineering: an attacker persuades someone to install an app or approve access that the app does not need. A malicious app might pose as a bank service, an update, or an unrelated familiar app.
Fake apps and sideloaded APKs
Microsoft documented an India-focused campaign in which a malicious APK impersonated a bank’s KYC app and was distributed through social media. The app requested SMS access and asked for information including a mobile number, ATM PIN, PAN details, debit-card digits, account number, and banking credentials; it then hid its icon. This is one reported campaign, not a template for every Trojan. (Microsoft Threat Intelligence, November 20, 2023.)
A separate report published September 18, 2026, describes RatHat download pages reached through messages and malicious ads. The pages posed as familiar apps and encouraged users to sideload APKs. After installation, the malware pressured users to grant Accessibility access. (Malwarebytes reporting Zimperium zLabs research.)

(The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How do Trojans capture banking passwords and login details?
Counterfeit login screens
Some Trojans wait for a targeted banking app to open, then put a fake sign-in screen in front of it. The screen can look like part of the bank app, so the person enters their details into an attacker-controlled interface rather than the genuine one. IBM’s August 11, 2026 analysis of GoldDigger describes bank-login phishing overlays with dynamically supplied content. Cleafy’s TeaBot analysis describes an imitation app or WebView shown above a legitimate banking app.
Misusing Accessibility access
Android’s Accessibility service is a legitimate feature intended to help people interact with their devices. Depending on the service and permissions involved, it can expose screen content or enable interactions with other apps. IBM reports that GoldDigger uses Accessibility to read credentials on banking login screens, view screen content, read SMS messages, and simulate input in a banking app. India’s Cyber Swachhta Kendra describes Nexus using Accessibility for keylogging and other permission grants. Cleafy reports that TeaBot tracks activity in targeted apps and retrieves window content.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Having an Accessibility service enabled is not by itself evidence of malware: assistive apps may need it to perform their stated function. The warning sign is an unrelated app asking for broad access that does not fit what it does, particularly after an unsolicited installation or while pressuring you to approve permissions.
Can an Android app steal a bank PIN or SMS code?
Yes, but the method depends on the app and campaign. A fake app can simply ask the user to type a PIN. In Microsoft’s documented KYC-app campaign, the malicious app requested an ATM PIN. That is different from RatHat’s reported technical approach: the September 2026 report says it captured raw touch coordinates and compared them with known keypad or pattern layouts to reconstruct PINs. These are specific reported examples, not universal Trojan capabilities.

SMS one-time passwords can also be exposed. IBM’s GoldDigger analysis reports access to SMS content, including two-factor authentication messages; the Cyber Swachhta Kendra’s Nexus advisory and Cleafy’s TeaBot analysis also describe SMS theft or interception. If malware can see messages on the compromised phone, a code sent to that phone may not provide the protection you expect.
What can happen after credentials are stolen?
Some malware can do more than collect information. IBM reports that GoldDigger can inject input to imitate user interactions and initiate fraudulent transactions. That shows how stolen access can lead to activity inside a banking app, but it does not mean every banking Trojan automatically transfers money: behavior depends on the malware’s capabilities, configuration, and the access it obtains.

What should you do if you entered bank details in a suspicious app?
- Stop entering information into the app. Do not provide more banking details or approve additional requests while you investigate.
- Contact your bank immediately if you see unusual account activity. Report the activity so the bank can advise on protecting the account. Cyber Swachhta Kendra specifically recommends contacting the bank about unusual activity.
- Do not assume one scan or uninstall resolves every infection. The reviewed guidance does not establish a single recovery procedure that is sufficient for every malware family and Android configuration. The right response may depend on what access the app obtained and what has happened to the account.
How can you reduce the risk of Android banking malware?
- Install apps from trusted official app stores or the device maker’s official source. This lowers risk but is not a guarantee that an app is safe.
- Check the publisher and consider whether each requested permission makes sense for the app’s purpose. Be especially cautious if an unrelated banking, streaming, delivery, or utility app pressures you to enable Accessibility.
- Keep Android updated and leave Google Play Protect enabled, as recommended by Cyber Swachhta Kendra.
- Do not enable Developer Options or Wireless Debugging because an unknown app asks you to. The RatHat report describes misuse of Wireless Debugging after Accessibility access.
How much do these reports tell us about the risk?
They document ways particular malware families and campaigns have worked; they do not establish how common these attacks are across Android users today. Capabilities, targeting, distribution, and response vary by malware family, campaign, Android version, and region. The examples above explain possible techniques, not a diagnosis of any individual phone.
