In its November 2019 launch announcement, AWS said this could lower the device baseline from 50 MB of RAM to 1 MB and from an ARM Cortex-A-class processor to an ARM Cortex-M-class microcontroller. The program has not been available since September 2022, so those figures describe a historical AWS offering, not a service makers can sign up for today.
How the integration reduced the device workload
Ordinarily, a voice-enabled product needs local resources to handle parts of the audio and Alexa interaction pipeline. AWS’s integration shifted several of those jobs off the physical product: media retrieval, audio decoding, audio mixing, and state management ran in a cloud-based virtual Alexa Built-in device. The physical product connected to AWS IoT Core and exchanged audio messages with AVS through reserved MQTT topics.
That division of work was intended to let smaller connected products add Alexa voice experiences without carrying as much memory and processing capability on the device itself. AWS named light switches, thermostats, and small appliances as possible applications; these were examples, not proof that every such product used the integration.
What hardware reduction AWS claimed
AWS’s November 2019 launch announcement compared a 50 MB RAM device baseline with a 1 MB RAM target, and ARM Cortex-A-class microprocessors with ARM Cortex-M-class microcontrollers. Those are AWS’s stated launch-era figures, not independent measurements or universal requirements for every product.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
| Device-side measure | AWS’s 2019 comparison | What the comparison means |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 50 MB of RAM to 1 MB of RAM | AWS said shifting work to the cloud reduced the stated device-memory baseline. |
| Processor class | ARM Cortex-A-class microprocessors to ARM Cortex-M-class microcontrollers | AWS described a move to a lower-resource microcontroller class for the device. |
AWS also said production costs could fall by “up to 50%.” That was a launch-announcement claim, not a guaranteed saving or a result shown to apply to every product. Hardware cost depends on the full device design and production choices, and the cited announcement does not establish a typical saving.
Why this was different from earlier AVS hardware
The integration’s 1 MB/Cortex-M target should not be confused with Amazon’s general description of AVS or with earlier development hardware. Amazon’s 2015 AVS announcement described a connected device with a microphone, speaker, and internet connection as basic ingredients for Alexa integration; it did not specify the 2019 AWS IoT integration’s hardware profile.

Likewise, Amazon’s October 2017 announcement described a Synaptics AudioSmart two-microphone development kit using an NXP i.MX7D dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor on a pico-pi-imx7 board. It ran Linux, an AVS client, and a wake-word engine. That historical kit illustrates a more capable local setup, but Amazon’s announcement does not establish that it remains available to buy.
Is the AWS IoT integration available now?
No. Amazon’s AVS Integration for AWS IoT page says the program has not been available since September 2022. AWS’s original announcement listed launch-era AWS IoT Core regions and exclusions, but those historical region details do not indicate current availability.

Amazon’s current Alexa Built-in developer guidance says AVS developer tools are no longer generally available and directs makers interested in Alexa-connected products to Works with Alexa. Amazon also lists solution providers offering services such as planning, voice design, pre-tested reference architectures and hardware, development, manufacturing, testing, and go-to-market support. This is a current direction for device makers, not evidence that any provider reproduces the retired AWS IoT integration or its specific hardware profile.
