AlphaGo beat professional Go player Lee Sedol 4–1 in a five-game match in Seoul in March 2016. The result was a landmark in AI, but it was a milestone—not proof that computers had permanently settled the contest between humans and machines at every board game.

What happened in the Lee Sedol match?

Google’s account of the match records a 4–1 win for AlphaGo over Lee Sedol. DeepMind describes Lee as a winner of 18 world titles and as widely considered the greatest Go player of the decade. The five games took place in Seoul in March 2016.

DeepMind later reported that more than 200 million people worldwide watched the match. That is the company’s audience estimate, not an independently verified count. In its retrospective, DeepMind characterized the result as AlphaGo defeating a human Go world champion “a decade before experts thought possible.” Google’s account of the Seoul match and DeepMind’s AlphaGo overview describe the event and its significance.

Why was beating a Go champion significant?

Go is an ancient board game played by two people using black and white stones. Players place stones on a grid, aiming to control territory while also keeping their groups from being captured. Its broad strategic possibilities made it a major challenge for AI systems: success required more than following a short sequence of obvious moves.

AlphaGo combined deep neural networks with search. The networks helped the system assess positions and identify promising moves; search let it examine possible continuations. The version that faced Lee also learned from human games, giving it examples of how strong players approached the game.

How did later AlphaGo systems change the approach?

The 2016 match was not the final form of the technology. DeepMind subsequently described systems that learned differently and, in the case of AlphaZero, applied the approach to more than one game.

AlphaGo, Lee Sedol match version Used human games alongside neural networks and search. Beat Lee Sedol 4–1 in the March 2016 match.
AlphaGo Zero Learned Go through self-play, starting from the rules rather than human game examples. DeepMind reported that after three days of training it beat the previously published AlphaGo 100–0. DeepMind’s AlphaGo Zero account.
AlphaZero Extended the approach to chess, shogi, and Go. DeepMind reported that in Go it surpassed the 2016 Lee-match version after 30 hours of training. DeepMind’s AlphaZero account.

The 100–0 and 30-hour figures are DeepMind’s reports about its own systems. They are useful for understanding the company’s account of how the technology progressed, but they are not independent audits or a ranking of today’s Go engines.

What does the match tell us about AI and human skill?

The match showed that a machine-learning system could defeat an elite human at Go, a game whose strategic complexity had made that achievement seem distant. The sequence that followed also matters: AlphaGo learned from human examples, AlphaGo Zero learned through self-play from the rules, and AlphaZero carried the broader approach across Go, chess, and shogi.
