AI wingman drones reduce collision risk with layered autonomy, not a single “anti-crash” algorithm. Onboard sensors and flight controls maintain separation from teammates, terrain and other aircraft; collaborative software shares tracks and allocates tasks; and, for civilian beyond-visual-line-of-sight flights, airspace services add strategic deconfliction. These layers can fail in unusual or hostile conditions, so they are backed by mission constraints and human supervision.

Rules of engagement are likewise divided between humans and machines. Publicly described architectures leave mission-level use-of-force judgments—such as target selection, prioritization and choice of weapon or effect—with commanders or operators, while autonomous functions handle bounded navigation, maneuver and tactical execution. Demonstrations show meaningful progress, but not a universal, fully fielded capability.

What an AI wingman is actually controlling

An AI wingman is an unmanned or optionally unmanned aircraft intended to work with a crewed fighter or with other uncrewed aircraft. The phrase covers several designs and software architectures, so “autonomous” does not describe one fixed level of independence. A vehicle may be able to hold formation, route around an obstacle and share sensor data while still requiring a human to approve a mission objective or any use of force.

The engineering problem has three dimensions:

  • Vehicle safety: keep the aircraft from striking a teammate, terrain, a crewed aircraft or a threat while meeting flight-control limits.
  • Team coordination: prevent several vehicles from converging on the same route or target, and divide sensing and mission tasks.
  • Governance: ensure that actions, especially those involving weapons, remain inside commander-approved constraints and applicable law.

These dimensions are related but not interchangeable. A network can coordinate targets without providing a last-second collision guarantee, and a good obstacle-avoidance system does not decide whether an attack is lawful.

The three layers that reduce collision risk

1. Vehicle-level sensing and flight control

Each aircraft runs a fast control loop that combines its available sensors with a flight plan and safety limits. It detects nearby aircraft, terrain and other hazards, predicts where those objects may be when the drone reaches the same area, and adjusts its trajectory. Formation software adds the position and velocity of teammates so a wingman can preserve tactical spacing instead of simply following a fixed point.

The output is a continuously updated path or maneuver command. If the preferred route conflicts with terrain, another aircraft or a mission boundary, the planner can select a different heading, altitude or timing. Flight-control software then checks that the maneuver is physically achievable. This is why collision avoidance is better understood as repeated sensing, prediction and replanning than as a one-time route calculation.

2. Team-level information sharing and task allocation

Collaborative aircraft exchange tracks, locations, task status and mission intent when a communication path is available. The team can then allocate reconnaissance sectors, assign one aircraft to investigate a contact and reserve another for escort or relay work. Shared information reduces the chance that two vehicles independently choose intersecting routes or duplicate the same task.

Coordination may be centralized, distributed or hybrid. In a centralized design, a lead aircraft or mission computer assigns tasks. In a distributed design, each vehicle contributes to a common plan and can make local decisions. A hybrid design uses a commander or lead node for priorities while allowing each aircraft to preserve separation and continue immediate safety actions if the network becomes unreliable.

3. Airspace-level deconfliction

Civilian beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations add a strategic layer above the aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration’s 2025 UTM guidance describes a collaborative ecosystem for flight planning, authorization, surveillance and conflict management. UTM services can help manage drone-to-drone collision risk across an operating area, but UTM is not a military wingman control system and does not replace onboard avoidance.

For flights beyond the operator’s visual line of sight, FAA guidance says an operator must have a way to avoid crewed aircraft. That can involve visual observers or an FAA-evaluated detect-and-avoid system. The requirement addresses encounters with conventional aviation; it does not establish that a military formation aircraft can safely perform every tactical maneuver in the same way.

How a wingman reacts when another aircraft is in the way

  1. Detect: onboard sensors and shared team data identify an aircraft, terrain feature or other object and estimate its motion.
  2. Classify and prioritize: the system determines whether the object is a teammate, a possible threat, terrain or an uncertain contact. Mission rules can assign different separation margins to each category.
  3. Predict conflict: the planner projects both trajectories, including timing, altitude and the aircraft’s maneuver limits.
  4. Replan: it evaluates alternate headings, altitudes, speeds or formation positions while preserving the higher-priority mission constraints.
  5. Execute and verify: flight controls perform the selected maneuver, then the sensing loop checks whether the conflict is actually resolving. If not, a more conservative maneuver or a contingency action is selected.

Team-level planning matters because a locally safe maneuver can create a new conflict for a teammate. Collaborative planners therefore communicate changes in route or task assignment when possible. Under degraded communications, each aircraft must rely more heavily on its own sensing and the mission intent already stored onboard.

Can a wingman fly without GPS or a data link?

Public demonstrations show that some collaborative systems can continue with limited communications, but they do not prove that every wingman can operate indefinitely without navigation signals or a network.

DARPA’s Collaborative Operations in Denied Environment (CODE) program tested multiple unmanned aircraft that could navigate, find, track, identify and engage targets under established rules of engagement while one human mission commander supervised them. The 2018 test series used up to six live and 24 virtual UASs. DARPA reported that, when communications were degraded or denied, CODE vehicles retained mission-plan intent instead of waiting for continuous human commands.

That capability is different from “flying blind.” A mission plan provides objectives and constraints, while the aircraft still needs whatever navigation, sensing and control inputs its design supplies. The public CODE description does not establish a universal sensor suite or guarantee of performance in every GPS-denied environment. It does establish an approach: preserve intent locally, share information when possible, and let each vehicle continue bounded actions when the link is intermittent.

Loss of a data link also changes who can authorize new actions. A drone may be able to avoid a collision or return to a contingency route without a live approval, yet lack authority to expand its mission or select a new weapon effect. That separation keeps communication resilience from becoming unrestricted autonomy.

Who decides whether an autonomous drone can fire?

Under publicly described U.S. policy and architecture, the human chain of command remains responsible for use-of-force judgment. DARPA’s Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program distinguishes higher-level functions—engagement strategy, target selection and prioritization, and choosing a weapon or effect—from lower-level aircraft maneuver and engagement tactics. The former may remain with a human while the latter are delegated to an autonomous system, beginning with bounded within-visual-range behaviors and progressing only as trust is established.

The Department of Defense’s 2023 policy update states that autonomous and semi-autonomous weapon systems must be designed to let commanders and operators exercise appropriate levels of human judgment over the use of force. It also requires appropriate care and compliance with the law of war, treaties, safety rules and applicable rules of engagement. This is a governance requirement, not a claim that every aircraft has identical controls or that a human must manually steer every maneuver.

In practice, task allocation can look like this:

  • Human commander or operator: approves the mission, defines permitted targets and effects, sets constraints and retains required use-of-force decisions.
  • Autonomous mission software: manages route choices, sensor tasking, formation behavior and coordination within those constraints.
  • Autonomous flight and engagement functions: execute approved maneuvers and bounded tactical actions, with safety interlocks and abort or contingency behavior where designed.

The exact boundary depends on the system, mission and authorization. “AI decided to fire” is therefore an inaccurate general description of the public policy model.

How different autonomy approaches compare

Approach Strength Limitation or question to verify
Mostly onboard sensing and planning Can preserve immediate separation and navigation when a network is weak. Has less shared context and may make less efficient team decisions.
Network-assisted coordination Combines tracks, assigns tasks and supports coordinated routes or tactics. Depends on communications availability, latency and resistance to disruption.
Centralized task allocation Provides a clear authority for priorities and deconfliction. A failed or isolated coordinator can reduce team performance unless vehicles have local fallbacks.
Distributed task allocation Allows vehicles to continue coordinating when no single node is available. Requires agreement protocols and can produce more complex verification and behavior.
Hybrid allocation Combines human or lead-node priorities with local safety and contingency decisions. The handoff rules between central authority and local autonomy must be tested explicitly.
Human approval of mission-level force decisions Keeps target selection, prioritization and weapon-effect choices under authorized judgment. Approval may be slower or unavailable when communications are disrupted; preplanned limits must be precise.
Autonomous maneuver inside constraints Lets the aircraft react quickly to geometry, terrain and threats. Does not by itself establish lawful target identification or authorization to use force.

When assessing a claimed capability, ask which column describes the real system, what was demonstrated live, and what happened when GPS, communications or sensor confidence degraded. A label such as “loyal wingman” does not answer those questions.

What testing has demonstrated so far

DARPA CODE, 2018

DARPA described CODE as enabling “multiple CODE-equipped unmanned aircraft” to navigate to destinations and find, track, identify and engage targets under established rules of engagement, all under one human mission commander. In the later test report, program manager Scott Wierzbanowski said the UASs “efficiently shared information, cooperatively planned and allocated mission objectives, made coordinated tactical decisions, and collaboratively reacted to a dynamic, high-threat environment with minimal communication.” The test scale—up to six live and 24 virtual UASs—is the specific public quantitative detail; it is not a fleet-wide readiness rate.

U.S. Air Force Valkyrie demonstration, July 2025

The Air Force reported that pilots in F-16C and F-15E fighters each controlled two XQ-58A Valkyrie aircraft during an air-combat training event. The demonstration showed real-time integration of manned and semi-autonomous systems. It did not establish that every Valkyrie or every future collaborative aircraft has the same autonomy, weapons authority or collision-avoidance performance.

Autonomy architecture work, February 2026

The Air Force reported integrating a government-owned Autonomy Government Reference Architecture across its Collaborative Combat Aircraft ecosystem. The report associated autonomy work from RTX/Collins and Shield AI with YFQ-42 and YFQ-44 flight testing. An open or government-owned architecture can improve interoperability and allow components to evolve, but architecture integration is not the same as declaring a complete operational fleet.

Royal Air Force strategy, March 2024

The RAF’s Autonomous Collaborative Platforms strategy presents these systems as force multipliers intended to augment existing capability and accelerate learning. Strategic intent indicates where the service is investing; it does not prove that a particular platform is deployed, armed or autonomous across all mission phases.

Failure modes and safeguards

No public source cited here provides a generalized collision-success rate, kill-chain accuracy figure or fleet-wide readiness statistic. The absence of those figures matters: a successful demonstration in a defined test environment cannot be converted into a universal safety percentage.

Important failure modes include:

  • Sensor uncertainty: an object may be missed, misclassified or tracked with the wrong speed or altitude.
  • Conflicting priorities: the shortest route may violate formation spacing, airspace limits or a commander’s mission constraint.
  • Communication loss: teammates may hold stale information or make different assumptions about task ownership.
  • Navigation degradation: loss or corruption of a positioning source can increase drift and route uncertainty.
  • Human-machine ambiguity: unclear authority boundaries can delay an abort or cause an operator to assume the system has taken an action it has not.

Safeguards are therefore layered too: conservative separation rules, local contingency plans, communication-loss behaviors, operator displays that expose confidence and intent, mission boundaries, testing against dynamic traffic, and explicit authorization for any use of force. The appropriate safeguard set depends on the aircraft and mission; there is no single checklist that makes all autonomous systems safe.

Are AI wingman drones operational yet?

They are operationally relevant but not universally operational in the sense of a standardized, fully deployed force. CODE demonstrated collaborative behaviors in 2018. The 2025 Valkyrie event showed pilots controlling two semi-autonomous aircraft each during training. The 2026 architecture work and the RAF’s 2024 strategy show continuing integration and force-development activity. Together, these milestones indicate active flight testing, experimentation and software maturation.

They do not prove that all vendors, aircraft or services share the same autonomy, that every mission can proceed without GPS or communications, or that a drone can independently authorize lethal force. Maturity should be stated by mission and test condition: simulation, surrogate or live aircraft; benign or high-threat environment; connected or denied communications; and human approval required at which decision point.

How to evaluate a new “autonomous wingman” claim

  1. Identify the exact aircraft, software version and test date.
  2. Separate live vehicles from virtual or simulated participants.
  3. Ask what collision hazards were included: teammates, terrain, crewed traffic and adversarial threats.
  4. Check whether communications and positioning were available, degraded or denied.
  5. Map human authority: who selected targets, prioritized them and chose the weapon or effect?
  6. Look for evidence of detect-and-avoid testing and the operating environment, rather than relying on the word “autonomous.”
  7. Confirm whether the result was a demonstration, a training event, a limited evaluation or an operational deployment.

The most credible descriptions state these boundaries. They explain what the aircraft did locally, what the team coordinated, what the human authorized and what happened when assumptions failed.
