An AI mosquito trap combines an attractant, sensors, machine-learning software and a capture mechanism. Carbon dioxide, heat, light, odor and airflow draw insects toward an entrance; infrared, audio or optical sensors detect an arrival; a trained model analyzes the insect’s image or wingbeat; and a fan, chamber, glue surface, sorter or electrical grid retains or neutralizes it. The artificial-intelligence part usually performs classification. It does not, by itself, guarantee that the mosquito is caught.
What makes a mosquito trap “AI”?
A conventional trap may attract mosquitoes with carbon dioxide (CO2), light or odor and then pull them onto a glue card or through an electric grid. An AI-enabled system adds a sensing and decision layer. It gathers evidence about each insect, compares that evidence with labeled examples, and returns a classification such as mosquito/non-mosquito, genus, species or sex.
The complete system normally has four functional blocks:

- Detection: an infrared beam or passive-infrared sensor can detect an interruption or movement. A microphone can measure wingbeat frequency, while an optical gate can estimate size.
- Classification: a macro camera records shape, markings, legs and wings, or an audio sensor records the buzz. A convolutional or other deep-learning model evaluates the signal.
- Physical handling: fans, chambers, gates, rotating sorters, glue surfaces or electrical grids retain, separate, immobilize or kill the insect.
That distinction matters when reading product claims. “AI detection” may mean that software recognized a mosquito in a frame, not that the trap achieved a particular catch rate or identified a species.

How the identification process works
1. Attract and admit the insect
The trap first creates conditions that encourage an insect to approach and enter. CO2 is a strong host cue, and designs may combine it with light, warmth, airflow, human-sweat or lactic-acid odor, or animal odor. The attractant determines which insects reach the sensor, so classification quality cannot compensate for a weak or poorly positioned entrance.
2. Detect the entry event
An infrared beam can report when an insect interrupts the entrance, and a passive-infrared sensor can report movement. Audio designs listen for the frequency pattern of a wingbeat; some proposed designs also estimate insect size. These signals are useful as triggers, telling the camera when to acquire an image or telling the processor which short audio segment to analyze.
3. Acquire an image or acoustic signal
Macro optics are used because a mosquito is small and its identifying features occupy only a limited number of pixels. A camera may capture body proportions, wing and leg arrangement, color patterns and other visible morphology as the insect passes a controlled background. An audio channel instead measures the buzz spectrum. Lighting, distance, orientation, background clutter and motion blur all affect the evidence available to the model.

4. Classify with a trained model
Developers train a neural network on labeled mosquito and non-mosquito examples. Depending on the training set, the output can be a broad insect category, a genus, a species or a sex label. A robust system can also return “unknown” or “out of distribution” when the specimen does not resemble any class in its database; forcing every unfamiliar insect into a known species would create misleading certainty.

Species and sex classification require more than a generic mosquito silhouette. The model must have representative examples for the local species, life stage, lighting and viewing angles. Wingbeat analysis can provide another signal, but temperature, humidity, airflow and nearby insects can alter the recorded sound. Combining camera, audio and environmental data can give the software more context than any one sensor alone.
5. Decide what to do with the insect
The classification result can control a gate, rotating mechanism or other actuator. In a surveillance design, a live specimen may be directed into a labeled chamber for later confirmation. In a household device, the result may simply trigger continued fan operation or an electrical grid. Some systems immobilize insects on a surface so the camera can count them, while others preserve them for laboratory analysis.
6. Store and report the observation
Research and public-health traps can record a timestamp, count, predicted species or sex, environmental readings and location. A cloud or GIS connection can then display abundance and vector-risk patterns on a dashboard. This reporting layer is separate from the physical capture rate: a device can produce a confident label for an insect that subsequently escapes.
Can an AI trap tell which mosquito species it caught?
Yes, species-level identification is technically possible, but it is not a universal consumer-trap capability. A peer-reviewed NHRI prototype identified live Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus with computer vision and deep-learning networks. Its rotating mechanism directed specimens into corresponding chambers so they could remain available for analysis. The study is documented at the NHRI peer-reviewed paper.

The Taiwan government’s 2025 technology case describes a multimodal system using infrared sensors, a high-resolution macro optical system, temperature and humidity detectors, and CO2 sensing. Its software used a pre-built database of 10,800 dynamic and static images and could identify disease-vector mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Trap, environmental and geographic data were connected through cloud and GIS services. See the National Health Research Institutes technology case.
Sex classification is also valuable for surveillance because female mosquitoes are the ones that bite people and transmit viruses. IRTA describes acoustic classification of mosquito sex and genus in its smart-trap release. A species or sex label should still be treated as a model estimate unless the device’s validation covers the insects and conditions in your area.
How mosquitoes are captured after identification
| Mechanism | What happens | Best suited to | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fan and collection chamber | Airflow pulls the insect into a removable chamber or collection surface. | Counting or preserving specimens | The fan must retain the insect after recognition; an optical hit is not proof of retention. |
| Rotating or gated sorter | A motorized path directs an identified insect into a selected chamber. | Species-specific surveillance and laboratory work | Mechanical timing and alignment add failure points. |
| Glue or immobilization surface | The insect is held still for imaging, counting or later inspection. | Automated imaging and simple monitoring | Debris, overlapping insects and damaged specimens can complicate classification. |
| Electrical grid | The attracted insect is neutralized after reaching the grid. | Simple kill traps | The specimen is usually destroyed, limiting downstream species confirmation. |
| Laser or robotic interception | A directed system attempts to intercept an insect in flight. | Demonstrations and emerging prototypes | Safety engineering and reliable targeting remain substantial requirements; this is not a mainstream consumer standard. |
A smart-trap patent illustrates a possible combination of microphone, passive-infrared sensor, camera, membrane and attractant. It is a design disclosure rather than independent evidence that a commercial product reaches the proposed performance. Read it at US20220104474A1.
What published performance numbers actually mean
Recognition accuracy and capture rate measure different stages. Recognition asks whether the software labeled the insect correctly. Capture asks whether the hardware physically retained it. A system can score highly on the first measure while losing insects through airflow, gates or collection handling.

| NHRI test condition | Reported recognition | Reported capture | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Test-set images | 91.57% accuracy | Not stated for this image test | Image-classification performance on the study’s test set, not a field catch rate. |
| Live Aedes aegypti in a tent | 92% | 44% | Recognition and physical capture diverged under the tent setup. |
| BG-trap configuration | 97% | 67% | Results apply to that configuration and its tested conditions. |
| Simulated living room | 90% | 49% | Background and room conditions changed both measures. |
These figures were reported by the NHRI research team in 2023 and should not be generalized to every species, room or retail trap. Lighting, background clutter, mosquito orientation, camera distance, attractant strength, airflow and non-mosquito insects can all change results. A manufacturer should state the species, environment, hardware configuration and metric behind any percentage.
Why multimodal sensing can outperform a single sensor
Each sensing method supplies a different kind of evidence. Infrared detects an entry event but usually cannot identify species. A microphone can distinguish wingbeat patterns but may be affected by fan noise or nearby insects. A camera can inspect morphology but needs adequate focus, lighting and orientation. Temperature, humidity and CO2 readings provide context that can help explain why activity changed.
Combining these streams lets a system trigger imaging only when an insect crosses the inlet, reject some non-mosquito objects by size or movement, and attach environmental context to every record. It does not remove the need for representative training data or local validation. If a local species is absent from the training set, a multimodal model may still misclassify it unless it can flag an unknown.
Consumer traps versus surveillance systems
Household devices
Many consumer products marketed as CO2 mosquito traps attract insects and then use a fan, glue surface or electrical grid. They may count catches, but ordinary versions can kill or retain mosquitoes without performing species-level AI identification. Treat “AI” wording as a claim to verify rather than evidence of a particular model, sensor or accuracy.

Public-health and research deployments
Institutional systems are designed to produce standardized observations over time. An attachment described in an AMCA Scout presentation immobilizes and images mosquitoes, extracts abundance and species data, and transmits results to a web dashboard. A U.S. SBIR award record describes a computer-vision counting trap intended to distinguish mosquitoes from non-mosquito arthropods and send abundance data to public-health agencies.
The MOSAICO project describes multi-mosquito analysis, open-set detection, expert correction and automatic reports at its project page. Those descriptions establish capabilities being developed or demonstrated; they do not, by themselves, establish a currently available retail service or a validated product for every region.
How to evaluate an AI mosquito-trap claim
- Identify the output. Determine whether the device reports a count, mosquito/non-mosquito result, genus, species or sex. A light that turns on after a fan runs is not species identification.
- Separate metrics. Look for recognition accuracy, false-positive rate and physical capture rate as separate values. Do not substitute one for another.
- Check the test conditions. Confirm the species, life stage, lighting, background, airflow, distance, attractant and indoor or outdoor setting used for the measurement.
- Ask how unknown insects are handled. A system that can reject unfamiliar specimens is less likely to present a forced, confident mislabel.
- Inspect the capture path. Find out whether the fan, gate, chamber, glue card or grid actually retains the insect after the camera sees it.
- Check the evidence level. Peer-reviewed field results and transparent methods carry more weight than a patent description or an unqualified marketing percentage.
- Match the device to the goal. For household reduction, a simple attract-and-capture device may be sufficient. For vector surveillance, insist on specimen handling, species validation, environmental records and exportable data.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
- Non-mosquito insects are classified as mosquitoes: improve lighting and background control, expand labeled examples and enable an unknown class.
- Recognition is good but catches are low: inspect fan airflow, entrance geometry, chamber seals and gate timing; the software cannot fix a mechanical escape route.
- Species results change by location: check whether local species and seasonal appearances are represented in training and validation data.
- Audio classification degrades near equipment: isolate microphone noise, account for fan frequency and combine audio with optical evidence.
- Counts are difficult to compare between sites: standardize attractant output, trap placement, operating hours and environmental logging before interpreting trends.
The most accurate description for a typical physical product is often “CO2 mosquito trap.” Reserve stronger wording such as “AI species-identifying trap” for systems that document their sensors, model classes, validation conditions and capture method.
