AI is changing what IT workers do more than it is making technical expertise irrelevant. Employers increasingly need people who can combine a solid technical specialty with AI and data literacy, security awareness, sound judgment and clear communication. For most IT professionals, that means learning to use and evaluate AI in their field—not retraining as a machine-learning researcher.
How is AI changing the skills employers want?
AI raises the baseline expected of many IT roles. Writing code, analysing data or resolving routine issues remain useful capabilities, but they are less sufficient on their own when AI tools can help produce or summarise that work. The differentiator is increasingly the ability to frame the right problem, check the output, understand its risks and turn it into a dependable result.
The strongest profile is often T-shaped: depth in a core discipline, plus enough breadth to work effectively with AI-enabled systems and colleagues. Core disciplines include software engineering, infrastructure, networking, cybersecurity, data engineering and IT service management. The complementary skills include data interpretation, analytical problem-solving, communication, collaboration, creativity, resilience and leadership.
OECD’s 2026 analysis estimates that fewer than 1% of workers need advanced AI skills. For most workers, the more relevant need is to use, analyse and interpret data and work effectively with AI-enabled systems. That distinction matters: familiarity with AI tools is not the same thing as building machine-learning models, and the latter is not a universal requirement for an IT career.

- Data: data quality, interpretation and governance help determine whether AI-assisted analysis is useful or misleading.
- Cybersecurity: security fundamentals matter when systems, data and AI-enabled workflows must be assessed and protected.
- Operations and service management: understanding how tools fit into existing processes supports reliable implementation rather than isolated experimentation.
These are not claims that every role must cover every specialty. They describe how domain expertise can be combined with AI fluency and human judgment to deliver work end to end.
Will AI replace IT jobs or change tasks within them?
The available forecasts point to substantial job disruption, but not a simple collapse in the number of jobs. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 forecasts that, across the jobs it covers, 170 million roles will be created and 92 million displaced by 2030—a net increase of 78 million—and that disruption will affect 22% of jobs. These are employer expectations for 2025–2030, not observed outcomes or guarantees.
Within a job, AI can automate or compress routine, codifiable tasks. That can raise the relative importance of work that requires supervision, interpretation, system integration, business judgment and interaction with people. OECD’s labour-market research also examines changing skill demand in jobs that do not require specialised AI skills, which is why the effect is relevant beyond AI-specialist teams.
For an individual worker, the practical question is therefore not only whether a job title will survive. It is which tasks in that job may change, which responsibilities remain, and what skills are needed to take ownership of the new workflow.

Are employers hiring fewer junior developers and more AI specialists?
The figures available here do not establish a broad, measured decline in junior developer hiring or a universal shift toward hiring AI specialists instead. They do show employers preparing for changing skill needs through a mix of recruitment, internal moves and reductions: in the World Economic Forum’s 2025 employer survey, 70% of organizations planned to hire people with emerging skills, 51% planned to move staff from declining roles into growing ones, and 41% expected workforce reductions related to skills obsolescence.
AI may compress some routine tasks that have often formed part of early-career work. That makes it important for junior candidates to show more than familiarity with a tool: demonstrate how you reason about a problem, verify an output, test a change and explain your decisions. This is a practical response to shifting task expectations, not proof that entry-level roles are disappearing.
Employers can make hiring more responsive by assessing demonstrated capabilities and work samples alongside experience. A skills-first approach can widen the candidate pool, but it works best when the organization clearly defines the tasks and capabilities a role actually requires.
How widespread is AI adoption, and what does that mean for IT teams?
AI use is spreading faster than advanced AI expertise. OECD reports that the share of firms in OECD countries using AI rose from about 7% in 2021 to 20% in 2025. It also estimates that around one-quarter of workers were exposed to generative AI during 2022–2024. These are OECD-country aggregates; they should not be treated as the adoption rate for every country, industry or IT occupation.

- Stable Design with Non-Skid Feet: Equipped with anti-slip feet for secure placement on flat surfaces. Minor surface variations may occur due to material and handling but do not affect functionality.
That gap between broad exposure and scarce advanced expertise supports a practical distinction for workforce planning: many teams need people who can use AI responsibly within their existing discipline, while a smaller share of roles need deep AI specialization. The right balance depends on the organization’s data, governance, security and deployment environment.
What should you learn to stay employable in tech?
Start with the work you already do, then add skills that improve your ability to deliver and verify outcomes. A course or certificate may signal effort, but a project or work sample that shows applied judgment is stronger evidence of capability.
- Map your current tasks. List recurring responsibilities and distinguish routine work from tasks requiring context, judgment, coordination or accountability.
- Learn the AI features already used in your organization. Focus on the actual tools and workflows available to you, and understand what they can and cannot do.
- Strengthen data and security fundamentals. Practise checking data quality, interpreting results and identifying relevant security or governance risks in your field.
- Build a verifiable project. Show a practical improvement or workflow, explain how you evaluated the output, and make your own contribution clear.
- Practise explaining trade-offs. Communicate assumptions, risks and recommendations to both technical colleagues and non-specialists.
Choose a learning route based on the gap you need to close, not the appeal of an AI label. Broad AI literacy helps with tool use and evaluation; deeper study is appropriate when your target role specifically requires machine learning, data engineering or security expertise. Vendor-neutral foundations transfer across platforms, while platform-specific learning can be useful when it matches your employer’s environment. A coached project or formal programme may provide more support than self-study, but the most useful choice is one that produces evidence you can apply.

Employers face three simultaneous pressures identified in the World Economic Forum’s 2025 employer survey: recruit for emerging capabilities, transition existing staff and address roles affected by skills obsolescence. The report also found that nearly 40% of job skills are expected to change and 63% of employers cited skills gaps as a key barrier. These are survey-based expectations, not a measurement of skills already lost or roles already eliminated.

- Define the work before the job title. Break roles into tasks and identify where AI may augment work, automate routine steps or create new review and integration responsibilities.
- Set capability requirements. Specify the technical foundation, AI and data literacy, security knowledge and human skills needed for each role.
- Choose between hiring and development deliberately. Recruit for genuinely scarce expertise; consider internal training and mobility where existing staff can develop the required capability.
- Assess applied ability. Use relevant work samples or demonstrations alongside experience, and evaluate how candidates validate results and communicate decisions.
- Redesign measures of performance. Assess the quality and reliability of the new workflow, not simply whether an AI tool was used.
Training is most likely to help when it is tied to real tasks, supported by time and coaching, and aligned with the organization’s data, security and deployment controls.
Do AI-related job listings offer an advantage to applicants?
Microsoft and LinkedIn reported that job postings mentioning AI were associated with a 17% increase in application growth in their 2024 analysis. Their Work Trend Index surveyed 31,000 people across 31 countries and combined that survey with LinkedIn hiring data and Microsoft productivity signals. The association does not prove that adding an AI keyword to a posting causes more applications, nor does it show that every AI-related role is easier to fill.
For candidates, the useful takeaway is to make relevant AI experience visible when it is real: describe the task, your contribution and how you checked the result. For employers, a keyword alone is not a substitute for a precise description of the skills and work involved.
