AI detectors estimate whether writing resembles examples labeled as human-written or AI-generated. They do not check a document’s authorship history, so a score is an uncertain classification—not proof of who wrote the text. Different tools can disagree because they use different models, training data, thresholds, input requirements, and reporting rules.

How do AI detectors work?

A detector analyzes submitted text and applies a classifier or another statistical procedure intended to distinguish examples labeled human-written from examples labeled AI-generated. It may return a category, a score, highlighted passages, or some combination. The result describes how that system classified the text under its own setup; it is not a record of the writing process.

One documented example is OpenAI’s 2023 classifier. OpenAI said it fine-tuned a language model on pairs of human-written and generated text about the same topics. That description applies to that classifier, not to every detector. Turnitin describes its own determination as complex and does not provide a complete technical recipe in its cited guide. OpenAI’s classifier announcement and Turnitin’s AI writing detection guide illustrate why it is not sound to assume all products use the same method.

It is also inaccurate to say that every detector simply calculates “perplexity and burstiness.” The cited vendor documentation does not establish those as universal measures. Unless a particular tool or study has verified and described its method, those terms should not be treated as an explanation of how all detectors work.

Why do AI detectors disagree?

They use different models and examples

Detectors are built independently. They can be trained or configured using different language models, human writing, genres, and languages. A style or generator represented well in one system’s examples may be less familiar to another. OpenAI’s description of its training data, for example, does not establish what another vendor used.

They draw the line differently

A detector’s threshold affects the trade-off between false alarms and missed AI-generated text. A system that tries to limit false positives may label fewer passages as AI-generated, including some that were generated by AI. Other systems may make a different trade-off or present results differently.

The products’ own rules demonstrate that there is no universal reporting threshold. OpenAI said it adjusted the threshold for its 2023 web classifier to keep false positives low. Turnitin’s guide says its report suppresses numerical results below 20% and displays an asterisk for the 0–20% band because it found a higher incidence of false positives there. These are separate product decisions, not an industry-wide standard. OpenAI’s announcement; Turnitin’s guide.

Text length, language, and format matter

A tool may be less reliable outside the conditions it supports or has evaluated. OpenAI warned that its 2023 classifier was unreliable on short passages under 1,000 characters, non-English text, code, predictable writing, edited AI text, and inputs unlike its training data. Turnitin’s cited guide defines its eligible content as prose in long-form writing and says its model does not reliably detect poetry, scripts, code, bullet lists, tables, or annotated bibliographies.

For Turnitin specifically, the guide states that its English detector includes paraphrase and bypass detection, while its Spanish and Japanese detectors do not include those capabilities. A percentage from a system that targets a different type of text or covers a different portion of a document is not directly comparable with another service’s percentage. These live operational details may change; consult the current Turnitin guide for its requirements.

They may measure different things and show different portions

One product may aim to identify raw output from a large language model; another may also target text that has been paraphrased or altered with certain tools. Products can also differ in minimum input length, whether they assess a whole document or qualifying passages, whether they show highlighted text, and whether low scores are withheld. A headline percentage is meaningful only alongside the product’s definition of what it measures.

Systems change, and text can be edited

AI-generated writing can be edited in ways that affect a detector’s result. OpenAI noted that edits could evade its classifier and said it was unclear whether detection would retain a long-term advantage. A product update can also change a result, so anyone documenting a score should preserve the service name and report date rather than treating the score as timeless.

Can an AI detector prove that I used AI?

No. A detector score alone cannot establish who wrote a passage or whether a person violated a rule. False positives and false negatives are both possible: human writing may be flagged, and generated writing may not be. OpenAI said its classifier should be a complement to other ways of assessing a text’s source, not a primary decision-making tool. Turnitin likewise warns that its model may misidentify human-written, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased text and should not be the sole basis for adverse action against a student. OpenAI; Turnitin.

This matters because human writing can be predictable or formulaic, while generated writing can be edited. Text alone may not resolve authorship, intent, or misconduct. In an academic setting, Turnitin calls for further scrutiny, human judgment, and use of the institution’s policies rather than relying on a detector in isolation.

How should educators and writers interpret a detector report?

  1. Keep the report and identify its conditions. Record the product, version or report date, language, and text submitted when available. A score without those details is difficult to interpret later.
  2. Check whether the text fits the tool’s stated scope. Review its requirements for length, language, prose format, file type, and document coverage. For Turnitin, the cited guide specifies at least 300 words of qualifying prose and an upper limit of 30,000 words; check the live guide for current operational requirements.
  3. Read the percentage as a classification over defined text. It is not the percentage of a writer’s thoughts, effort, or authorship that came from AI. Turnitin says its AI percentage applies to qualifying text its model identifies and is distinct from its similarity score.
  4. Review evidence beyond the detector. In an educational review, consider the assignment, drafts or revision history, citations, and the writer’s explanation under applicable institutional policy. A score does not establish intent or misconduct.
  5. Do not ask ChatGPT to authenticate the passage. OpenAI says ChatGPT has no knowledge of whether content was AI-generated or whether it generated a particular text; an authorship guess may be made up and has no factual basis. OpenAI Help Center.

How can you compare two detector results fairly?

Before treating a disagreement as meaningful, check whether the products were evaluating the same target, text, and conditions.

  • Target: Does each tool claim to detect raw LLM output, AI-edited writing, paraphrasing, or another category?
  • Input scope: What are the minimum length and format requirements? Does the result cover the full document or only eligible passages?
  • Language and genre: Does the tool support the language and kind of writing submitted, such as academic prose, code, or a nonstandard format?
  • Decision rule: Does it show a continuous score, a category, or highlighted passages? Does it suppress or mark low scores?
  • Evaluation evidence: Which generators and human samples were tested, what did the study count as a false positive or false negative, and when was it conducted?
  • Permitted use: What do the vendor and relevant institution say about using the result in decisions? Turnitin, for example, says its result should not be the sole basis for adverse action against a student.

Why might a human-written essay be flagged as AI?

A detector may classify predictable or formulaic writing as resembling patterns it associates with generated text. OpenAI specifically identified very predictable material as a limitation of its 2023 classifier. A short passage, unsupported language or format, or writing unlike the system’s training examples can also make a result unreliable. A flag is therefore a reason to examine the report’s scope and the surrounding writing evidence, not a finding of authorship.

Can ChatGPT tell whether it wrote something?

No—not reliably. OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot know whether a given text is AI-generated or whether it generated that specific text; it may invent an answer when asked to identify authorship. Its response is not an authentication method. OpenAI Help Center.
