Acoustic levitation holds an object by exerting sound-driven forces on it—not by making it stick. In a common airborne setup, an ultrasonic emitter and reflector create a standing wave whose forces can balance gravity and provide a stable position. Arrays can shape and move these traps to manipulate small objects without physical contact.

What keeps a levitated object from falling?

Sound is a pressure wave. When it interacts with an object, the exchange of momentum produces an average force called acoustic radiation force. If the upward component of that force balances the object’s weight, and small movements away from its equilibrium position produce restoring forces, the object can remain suspended.

This is a force balance, not suction, magnetism, or an adhesive effect. The forces depend on the object and the sound field; a useful general picture is that the field creates places where an object can be trapped, but the detailed forces also depend on scattering, material, size, shape, and field geometry. A review of airborne acoustic levitation discusses these mechanisms and configurations.

How a standing-wave levitator creates a trap

Emitter and reflector

A familiar arrangement sends ultrasound from a transducer toward a reflector. The outgoing and reflected waves combine into a standing wave, producing a spatial pattern of pressure and acoustic forces. At suitable positions, the net force can support an object against gravity and help restore it if it shifts.

Arrays and movable traps

Rather than relying only on a simple emitter-and-reflector arrangement, an array can control the sound field’s shape. UCL describes arrays creating “pressure cages” around objects; changing the field can move the cage and the object it supports. This gives researchers a way to manipulate objects without touching them. UCL’s acoustic-levitation explainer describes this approach.

Why objects do not always settle at the same point

It is an oversimplification to say that every levitated object sits at a pressure node. A 2022 Physical Review Applied study examined expanded-polystyrene particles in air in a 40 kHz standing wave and found that trapping position and force depended critically on particle size. In that specific setup, some sizes trapped near pressure nodes, while others trapped off-axis near pressure antinodes. The study’s findings show why the object and field must be considered together.

What sizes can acoustic levitation support?

Many standing-wave airborne levitators use ultrasonic frequencies, typically around 20–100 kHz, and handle objects from hundreds of micrometres to a few millimetres, according to the airborne-levitation review. These are common operating scales, not a universal size limit; other designs target smaller or larger objects and more complex manipulation.

One specialized exception illustrates the range of possible engineering. In a 2017 paper, Andrade, Okina, Bernassau, and Adamowski reported levitating a 2.3 g, slightly curved object larger than the wavelength in air. Their purpose-built system used two 25 kHz ultrasonic Langevin transducers connected to an aluminum plate. The reported vertical radiation force countered gravity, while a lateral restoring force helped stabilize the object horizontally. The PubMed record for the study describes the apparatus and result. It is not evidence that an ordinary small levitator can lift arbitrary large objects.

Where acoustic levitation is used

Research uses include non-contact manipulation of particles and fluids, sample or material handling, and three-dimensional acoustic manipulation. Near-field acoustic levitation has also been investigated as a possible non-contact bearing technology. A 2019 critical review covers squeeze-film air bearings and the engineering challenges to wider use; these are research and engineering directions, not proof of routine consumer deployment. The near-field acoustic levitation review provides that context.

A 2025 Journal of the Acoustical Society of America study experimentally examined external excitation of a standing-wave generator. Under the conditions studied, disturbance vibration could be transmitted to the levitated object, and the force direction could change. This is a specialized control finding, not a prerequisite for basic levitation. The report describes the experiment.
