AI virtual try-on is more useful for previewing how clothing might look than for predicting whether a specific size will physically fit. A convincing image can help you judge color, style, and broad silhouette, but it does not prove that the garment will match your measurements, preferred ease, or expectations for fabric and movement. Use the image as one input, then check the product’s size chart and measurements.
What virtual try-on can—and cannot—tell you
Image-based virtual try-on combines a garment image with a person image to generate a visual representation of the clothing on that person. Google’s 2023 technical explanation describes an image-conditioned diffusion approach intended to preserve visible details such as draping and wrinkles. It also explains how earlier cut-and-warp methods could distort clothing or produce visual defects: Google’s explanation of virtual try-on.
That is a description of how the system generates an image, not independent proof that the image predicts real-world fit. “Looks like” and “fits like” are separate claims. A plausible outline may help you imagine the overall appearance, but it may not represent the selected garment size, your body accurately, or how the fabric behaves when you move.
Why a realistic image may still be wrong about fit
Fit is more than the garment’s outline in a still image. It can involve tightness, ease, fabric drape and sheerness, silhouette changes, comfort, and how the garment moves. A 2026 CHI study found that participants noticed shortcomings in these details, including differences between sizes. In a study of 24 people shopping for clothing online, participants said try-on could help them form expectations or explore styles, while also raising concerns about fit accuracy and image detail. This was a small study of user experience, not a universal accuracy test or evidence of reduced returns. ACM CHI study.

Size and fit are related but not interchangeable: size may refer to a measurement or label, while fit concerns compatibility with a person’s body shape and design preferences. A generated image that looks convincing does not, by itself, establish either that the selected size is correct or that you will find the garment comfortable.
What the published accuracy evidence says
There is no general, independently established percentage that describes the accuracy of current consumer virtual try-on tools. Published figures apply to particular research designs and methods, so they should not be treated as a score for retail apps as a whole.

How to use a try-on image when choosing a size
- Start with the item’s own size guide. Do not assume the same label means the same fit across brands or products. Google’s Merchant Center documentation, for example, says shoppers can choose a virtual model from XXS to XXXL; that describes the service’s model range, not proof that it identifies a shopper’s correct garment size. - Check what the chart measures. Body measurements describe the wearer and help with size selection. Finished-garment measurements describe the item itself and can help you compare it with a similar garment you own. UNIQLO advises consulting both, noting that finished dimensions vary by design. - Measure the relevant body areas using the retailer’s directions. A soft cloth tape can help collect measurements for a body-size chart. Carhartt’s guide, for example, covers chest, natural waist, and hip measurements; the right points and method depend on the retailer’s instructions. Carhartt size guide.
- Account for fabric and intended fit. Slim, regular, and relaxed cuts can wear differently, and material affects how a garment drapes or stretches. Two items with the same labeled size are not guaranteed to feel alike.
- Use the image for appearance, not comfort. Judge visible style and broad silhouette in the preview, then rely on the chart and available garment measurements for size decisions. A still rendering cannot establish how a garment feels or moves.
What to check when comparing try-on services
There is no validated head-to-head score across consumer services in the cited evidence. If you are deciding whether a tool is useful, check what it actually represents rather than relying on image realism alone:

- Does it use your measurements, or a representative model?
- Which garment categories and poses does it support?
- Does it show size-dependent changes and account for material or drape?
- Does the provider explain limitations or indicate uncertainty?
