Aave V3 does not necessarily reject a Chainlink price just because it is old. In the cited Aave V3-origin AaveOracle implementation, a configured source is queried for its latest answer; the oracle uses its fallback when no source is configured or that answer is zero or negative. That lookup does not test the answer’s timestamp. Exact behavior can differ by Aave market, chain, asset, and customized implementation.
How Aave V3 gets a reserve’s price
Each Aave reserve has a price source selected for its market. Aave’s oracle registry manages asset sources and fallback configuration, and getAssetPrice(asset) returns the asset’s price in that market’s base currency. Source and fallback addresses can be queried; source configuration is handled by authorized pool or asset-listing administration, with governance selecting reserve sources. Aave’s documentation describes this arrangement at Aave’s oracle documentation.
In the cited aave-v3-origin AaveOracle implementation, the lookup follows these cases:
- Base-currency asset: return the configured base unit.
- No source registered: query the fallback oracle.
- Source registered: call
latestAnswer(). Return a positive answer; if the answer is zero or negative, query the fallback.
The contract comment describes the last condition: “If the returned price by a Chainlink aggregator is <= 0, the call is forwarded to a fallback oracle”. This is a value check, not a freshness check. The cited implementation does not call latestRoundData() or compare an update timestamp in this path. Treat that as behavior of this implementation, not a guarantee for every deployed or customized Aave market.

What a stale feed means
Chainlink Data Feeds do not update continuously with every market movement. A feed updates when its configured deviation threshold is exceeded or its heartbeat interval is reached. Heartbeats and deviation thresholds vary by feed and blockchain; there is no single interval that applies to all Aave reserves.
Consequently, a feed can return a positive answer that is older than an application should accept. The fallback condition described above does not reject that answer merely because time has passed. Chainlink recommends that integrators inspect updatedAt from latestRoundData(), or use latestTimestamp, and set an acceptable freshness limit for their application. Whether a stale answer is detected therefore depends on the particular market’s source or adapter and any additional timestamp-aware controls or operating policies. Do not assume that an Aave fallback automatically activates when a Chainlink feed stops updating, or that fallback data is necessarily newer.
How the fallback and sentinel differ
The fallback oracle is part of asset price lookup: in the cited implementation, it is queried when there is no registered source or the configured source returns a non-positive answer. Its address and behavior are market-specific, so the existence of a fallback does not establish that it checks timestamps or provides fresher data.

PriceOracleSentinel addresses a different problem. Aave documents it as an L2 sequencer-downtime safeguard: after service returns, a grace period gives users time to make positions healthy before normal operations resume. The documented controls concern borrowing and liquidations, depending on the deployment and version. A sequencer outage or recovery window is not the same as checking the age of each asset’s price. Consult Aave’s oracle documentation and the specific market’s deployed configuration before relying on exact operation rules.
What to verify for a specific Aave market
There is no reliable universal answer for an exact feed address, heartbeat, fallback, or sentinel rule without naming the chain, market, and asset. For a market-specific assessment, verify the deployed configuration rather than generalizing from another Aave deployment.

- Identify the deployment: name the chain and Aave market, then locate its deployed
AaveOracleand asset source through the market’s provider/configuration and source lookup. - Inspect the source: establish whether it is a standard source using
latestAnswer()or a custom adapter with different behavior. - Check feed freshness settings: for a Chainlink feed, verify the exact feed address, decimals, latest
updatedAt, heartbeat, and deviation threshold on that chain. - Inspect the fallback: confirm its deployed address and implementation; do not infer its freshness or safety from its name or presence.
- Check the sentinel separately: determine whether one is configured and inspect the relevant deployment/version rules for borrowing and liquidations.
For other configured mechanisms, such as CAPO, check asset coverage and purpose rather than assuming they apply to every reserve. Aave describes correlated-asset pricing logic for strongly correlated assets such as wrapped tokens; it is not a universal fallback for all assets.
