Resecurity says testing took place in the vendor’s staging environment, did not touch production, and test records were restored.
How the authentication bypass worked
The system used Microsoft Entra ID for single sign-on, but it also relied on its own cookie, named session_secret_example, to represent an authenticated user. According to Resecurity’s October 1, 2026 disclosure, the application signed a user’s public database identifier, or CUID, with a hard-coded secret that was the same predictable string as the cookie’s name.
A signature can show that data was signed with a particular key; it does not make the data secret or prevent forgery if the key is known. Because the user ID was exposed in API responses and the signing secret was predictable, researchers could use a known cookie payload and signature to recover the key offline, then create a valid cookie for another user ID. Resecurity says it tested about 110 candidate secret values.
The application accepted that cookie as its identity context without a separate, unpredictable server-side session binding. In practical terms, the flaw was in the application’s own session trust model. Resecurity stated: “The underlying issue was not a compromise of Microsoft Entra ID itself, but a failure in the application’s own session trust model.”

What the authorized test demonstrated
Resecurity reports that researchers successfully impersonated 95 distinct employee accounts among 241 tested user IDs. These are results from the assessment, not a count of production accounts compromised by an attacker. The disclosure says the work was performed in the vendor’s staging environment; production systems were not touched and test records were restored.
- Account access: forged sessions carried permissions aligned with the impersonated accounts’ roles.
- Administrative impact: Resecurity says it demonstrated a state-changing action using an administrator-level session.
- Potentially sensitive response data: the disclosure says
/api/v1/auth/meexposed the authenticated user’s Entra refresh token. This was an assessment finding; the report does not say the tokens were stolen or abused outside the authorized tests.
GBHackers’ October 2, 2026 summary independently repeats the account count and describes a 251-route API surface. It also reports a Node.js/Express, Next.js, Prisma/PostgreSQL, and MSAL-based stack; those implementation details are secondary reporting, not independently confirmed here.

Why SSO and MFA did not prevent it
SSO and MFA protect the sign-in flow, but an application can introduce another trust boundary when it creates its own session after sign-in. If that application accepts a forged cookie as proof of identity, the cookie flaw can undermine the protection users expect from the original sign-in flow. That does not mean Entra ID or MFA itself was compromised in this assessment.
Three design lessons follow from the reported flaw:

- A public user identifier is not a session secret. Signing it does not make it unpredictable.
- A signature prevents undetected changes only while its signing key remains secret. A hard-coded, guessable key can make valid signatures reproducible.
- An application session needs its own sound design and controls; identity-provider authentication alone does not secure a weak application session.
How the reported design compares with server-side sessions
| Design | What the browser holds | Identity and invalidation | Key risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reported pattern | A signed public user ID in a cookie | The cookie itself acts as the identity context, without a separate unpredictable server-side session binding | A predictable or exposed signing key can let someone forge cookies |
| Random server-side session | A random, server-generated session identifier | The server checks the identifier against session state and can invalidate that state centrally | Session identifiers still need secure handling, but identity is not established by signing a public user ID with a hard-coded key |
Resecurity recommends replacing identity-bearing self-contained cookies with random server-generated session identifiers backed by server-side session state. Central session state also gives the application a place to invalidate sessions after a compromise or account event.

- Rotate the signing material and invalidate existing sessions. Treat a hard-coded or exposed key as compromised; rotating it without expiring cookies signed under the old key can leave forged or previously issued sessions usable.
- Replace the session design. Use random, server-generated session identifiers backed by server-side session state instead of treating a signed public user ID as the session.
- Protect and separate secrets. Store strong signing secrets securely and use separate values across environments rather than embedding predictable literals in application code.
- Review logs and token exposure. Look for unusual session creation, account switching, or administrative activity, and investigate whether refresh-token exposure requires additional containment. Resecurity recommends reviewing authentication logs and invalidating sessions; it does not report that tokens were abused.
- Reassess sensitive actions. Consider whether high-impact administrative changes should require renewed authentication or other additional checks, rather than relying solely on an existing application session.
