Horizon Data Center Solutions announced a $7.5 million equity financing in December 2009, led by Ballast Point Ventures. The company said it would use the investment to open data centers in Northern Virginia and California, continue developing its Dallas operations, and grow managed IT services and a private-cloud platform.
How much did Horizon raise, and who funded it?
The announced financing was $7.5 million in equity. Ballast Point Ventures led the investment; the firm received a minority equity stake, and partner Paul Johan joined Horizon’s board. The company was founded in 2007 by Lance A. Smith and Chuck Smith, according to a contemporaneous report. Contemporaneous announcement
A separate 2009 SEC notice listed a $5 million securities amount as part of the reported offering. That figure is not the same as the company’s announced $7.5 million raise. SEC notice and contemporaneous report
What was the funding intended to support?
- Opening data centers in Northern Virginia and California.
- Continuing development in Dallas, Horizon’s home market.
- Expanding managed IT services and a private-cloud computing platform.
CEO Lance Smith said the investment would accelerate expansion into new markets. The announcement described these as plans; it does not establish that every planned site or service expansion was completed. Company announcement

What did Horizon operate in Dallas at the time?
In 2009, Horizon had two Dallas facilities, each measuring 25,000 square feet. The announcement positioned the financing as a way to build on that existing footprint while pursuing additional markets. Contemporaneous report
What happened after the financing?
In March 2010, Horizon leased space at Power Loft in Manassas, Virginia. The reported arrangement provided 2 MW of backed capacity, with an option for 10 MW. The follow-up also described a national footprint target of up to 120 MW. These are figures reported for the lease and Horizon’s stated target, not evidence that the full target was later reached. 2010 follow-up
