HomeBox is a self-hosted inventory and organization system for cataloging household belongings. It lets you organize items with categories, locations, tags, and custom fields, then add photos, documents, warranty details, purchase information, and maintenance schedules. Because it runs on your own server, you manage its deployment and backups rather than relying on a hosted inventory service.
What HomeBox does
The active HomeBox project describes itself as an “inventory and organization system built for the Home User.” Its purpose is to make household belongings searchable and easier to manage: record what you own, where it is, and relevant details about it.
Organize items and find them later
HomeBox supports categories, locations, tags, and custom fields. These help distinguish, for example, an appliance from a tool, record which room or storage area contains it, and add details that matter to your household. Search helps retrieve entries without browsing the inventory one by one.
Keep records with the item
Entries can include uploaded images and documents, along with warranty information. HomeBox also supports tracking purchase dates, prices, and maintenance schedules. That makes it useful for keeping records together, though it does not remove the need to maintain accurate entries yourself.

Use it across devices
The project describes its interface as responsive for desktop, tablet, and smartphone use. That can make the inventory accessible from different screens, provided your self-hosted instance is reachable from the device and network you use.
How HomeBox is deployed
HomeBox is written in Go and uses SQLite with an embedded web UI. The project presents this combination as a way to simplify deployment, use, and backup. Its README documents Docker deployment using the container image ghcr.io/sysadminsmedia/homebox:latest, with persistent storage mounted at /data. The project also documents rootless and hardened image variants.

The quick-start instructions configure a host port, container port, timezone, persistent data directory, and a randomly generated pepper file. They also restrict the pepper file’s permissions; users preparing for rootless or hardened variants may need to prepare the data directory as documented. These are project instructions, not a guarantee that defaults or requirements will be identical in every Docker environment. Follow the current README for the variant you choose.
The project README says idle memory use is generally less than 50 MB for the whole container. This is a project claim; the README does not provide an independent benchmark method, so treat it as an indicative statement rather than a universal resource guarantee.

Docker quick start
The project documents a setup that publishes host port 3100 to container port 7745 and stores application data in a mounted /data directory. Use the current project README for exact commands and any changes to the image or setup requirements:
- Generate a random pepper file and restrict its permissions, as shown in the project’s deployment instructions.
- Create and prepare a host data directory. Pay particular attention to ownership and permissions if using a rootless or hardened image.
- Run the documented Docker command with the
ghcr.io/sysadminsmedia/homebox:latestimage, mapping host port3100to container port7745. - Set the timezone, mount the persistent host data directory at
/data, and provide the pepper file as directed by the README. - Open the service using the host address and port configured in Docker, then verify that your data persists after restarting the container.

What self-hosting means for your data
Self-hosting gives you control over where the application runs and where its persistent files are stored. It also makes you responsible for protecting those files. Include the mounted data directory and uploaded media in a backup plan, and test that you can restore them; a running container alone is not a backup.
HomeBox is a practical fit if you are comfortable operating Docker, managing persistent storage, and keeping backups. If you want an inventory service with no server administration, self-hosting may add more work than you want. The project documentation establishes HomeBox’s features, but does not provide a basis for ranking it against hosted products or other self-hosted inventory tools.

The current project is maintained at sysadminsmedia/homebox, which describes itself as a continuation of the original project. The original hay-kot/homebox repository is archived and read-only as of June 12, 2024. For current installation instructions and project changes, use the active sysadminsmedia repository rather than treating the archived repository as the current source.
