On a physical trading card, the moving rainbow is usually an optical surface effect, not a tiny three-dimensional image floating above the card. A patterned reflective film, foil or coating diffracts light; as you tilt the card, different wavelengths reach your eyes. This article covers physical card finishes, including factory production, home-printable approximations and selective effects. A software “hologram” shader is a different subject and is only noted briefly below.

Why a holographic card changes color when it moves

The reflective layer contains a fine, repeated surface pattern. Light interacting with that pattern is sent toward the viewer at angle-dependent directions, so the visible color and highlights shift as the card moves. A commercial card-making explainer describes these as micro-embossed diffraction patterns and generally treats the retail “holographic” look as a two-dimensional optical pattern rather than a true three-dimensional hologram. See MakeACard’s explanation; it is useful background, but it is not an optics-standard reference.

The base artwork, clear coating and reflective pattern work together. Dark or transparent parts of the artwork can let more of the pattern show, while opaque ink can hide it. That is why a card can have either an all-over rainbow sheen or a holographic character, emblem or background while the remaining areas look comparatively flat.

One documented factory surface-transfer process

There is no single process used by every card manufacturer. However, European patent publication EP 4 613 498 A1, published on September 10, 2025, documents a concrete UV-casting route. The patent describes transferring a hologram pattern into a cured varnish layer rather than claiming that all trading cards are made this way. Read the official patent publication.

Pokemon Random Reverse Foil Single Cards, Lot of 25
  • Lot of 25 shiny/foil Pokemon cards.
  • All cards in this assortment are foil.
  • English language with standard card backs.
  • Because this is a random assortment, exact contents will vary.
  1. Apply UV varnish. A varnish layer is printed or otherwise deposited on the card in the areas intended to receive the effect.
  2. Bring in the casting film. A UV casting film carrying the desired hologram pattern is attached to the wet varnish.
  3. Cure with ultraviolet light. UV exposure hardens the varnish while the film is in contact with it.
  4. Peel away the film. Removing the casting film leaves a corresponding micro-pattern in the cured varnish.

The same patent discusses both full-surface transfer and selective transfer to only part of a card. Selective work is more demanding: the boundary of the patterned area must register with the artwork. The patent notes that misregistration at this boundary can damage the visual result.

Full-surface and selective holographic coverage

Choice What receives the effect Strengths Important considerations
Full surface Most or all of the card face Strong overall shimmer and simpler coverage geometry Can compete with small text or detailed artwork
Selective surface A character, logo, border, background or other masked element Preserves contrast in non-holographic areas and directs attention Requires a separate mask or controlled varnish/foil layer and accurate registration

Commercial printers commonly ask for a separate foil-mask layer for selective effects. 4OVER4 also recommends a physical proof because a monitor cannot reproduce the final angle-dependent reflection. Its specifications for stock, bleed and dimensions are for business cards, not automatically for trading cards, so use the printer’s current trading-card template instead. See 4OVER4’s guide.

Making a home approximation with printable holographic vinyl

A home printer cannot reproduce the industrial casting process simply by adding a “holographic” setting. A more accessible approach is to print onto a printable holographic vinyl sheet whose surface already supplies the shifting metallic or rainbow pattern. Deck Grimoire describes printing card art on holographic vinyl with a standard inkjet and explicitly distinguishes the result from factory foil. Its guide is at Deck Grimoire.

Basic workflow

  1. Choose a printable substrate. Confirm that the sheet is intended for inkjet use (or for your specific printer technology), and follow the material manufacturer’s feed, drying and coating instructions.
  2. Prepare the artwork. Decide whether the entire face should reveal the pattern or whether only a selected element should remain holographic.
  3. Print a small test. Check feeding, ink adhesion, color density and whether the pattern remains visible under the artwork. Compatibility varies by sheet, ink and printer; no universal combination can be assumed.
  4. Allow the print to cure. Use the sheet maker’s stated drying time before trimming, laminating or handling it.
  5. Trim and finish. Cut the card with a precise template and apply only a compatible protective layer. A clear laminate can alter gloss, reflectivity and the apparent strength of the pattern.

This route is an approximation: the vinyl’s pre-made pattern and the inkjet’s deposited ink do not equal a factory foil or a UV-cast varnish surface. Expect differences in registration, durability, edge finish and how the rainbow moves under light.

Selective effects in craft projects

Selective “holo character” work is harder than making an all-over card because the reflective material must line up with the printed image. A Reddit discussion uses the following anecdotal workflow: print a black mask with a laser printer, use toner-reactive foil, and print the artwork on transparent vinyl. The thread is a community experiment, not a validated or universal production method; read it at r/customtradingcard.

Alignment issues to plan for

  • Mask registration: the mask’s edges must match the character or other chosen shape in the artwork.
  • Scale and distortion: feeding, trimming or laminating can shift layers by a small amount, producing a visible halo or clipped edge.
  • Non-holo areas: those areas need a compatible opaque or clear finish so they do not unintentionally acquire the reflective pattern.
  • Layer order: test whether the foil, printed vinyl and protective laminate are designed to bond in the order you plan to use.

Make test pieces with simple shapes before attempting a detailed character silhouette. The patent’s warning about boundary misregistration applies conceptually even when the craft materials and tools are different.

Ordering professionally printed holographic cards

For a run of finished cards, ask the printer specific production questions rather than sending ordinary artwork and requesting “holo.” Commercial guidance from 4OVER4 and Xinyi Printing covers full-face and selective options, but the available substrates, processes and minimum quantities vary by supplier. Xinyi’s overview is at Xinyi Printing.

Preflight checklist

  • Does the printer offer full-face, selective or both holographic treatments?
  • What file format and naming convention are required for the foil or holographic mask?
  • Should the mask show the areas to receive foil, the areas to remain clear, or use a specified spot color?
  • What trading-card dimensions, bleed, safe area, stock and coating does the current template require?
  • Can the printer supply a physical proof, and is it made with the same substrate and finish as the production run?
  • How will the printer handle registration between the artwork and the holographic layer?

A proof matters because a screen preview cannot show the way the pattern changes with viewing angle. Offset and digital production also have different substrate and run-size trade-offs; obtain current specifications and a quotation from the chosen printer instead of transferring business-card specifications or assumptions from another supplier.

Choosing the right route

Your goal Most suitable starting point Why
A few experimental cards Printable holographic vinyl Accessible and fast, provided the sheet and printer are compatible
A selective character or logo Mask-based craft test or professional selective printing Registration and separation of holo and non-holo areas are the main challenges
Consistent cards for sale or a larger batch Commercial printer with a physical proof Offers controlled substrates, finishing and repeatability unavailable from a typical desktop setup
Maximum visual consistency with a manufactured trading card Professional production using the printer’s specified holographic process Factory-style film, foil or cast-varnish methods are not equivalent to inkjet vinyl

Physical finish versus a digital “hologram” effect

In a game engine, design app or website, “holographic trading card effect” may mean a shader or animation that changes color with a virtual camera angle. The evidence here does not establish implementation details for a particular engine, language or graphics program. A digital effect can imitate the visual cues, but it does not create the angle-dependent diffraction surface found on a physical card.
