Yes—the Hisense U8K FreeSync issue is real, but it is not one universal hardware defect. The most repeatable behavior is that enabling the TV’s separate FreeSync setting can disable HDR. Independent testing recommends leaving that toggle off and using ordinary VRR when HDR and adaptive refresh are both needed. Other symptoms—greyed-out controls, flicker, black screens, reboots, or missing 4K/144 Hz—can instead result from the GPU, driver, HDMI mode, cable, firmware, signal path, regional model, or a defective unit.

Identify exactly what is failing

Record the model suffix, country, firmware version, GPU or console, HDMI port, cable, resolution, refresh rate, HDR state, and whether the problem occurs with VRR disabled. “FreeSync does not work” is not specific enough to diagnose.

  • FreeSync is absent or reported unsupported in AMD Software.
  • The TV’s VRR or FreeSync control is greyed out.
  • HDR disappears when FreeSync is enabled.
  • 4K/144 Hz is unavailable or the signal falls back to 4K/60 Hz.
  • The picture flickers, briefly blacks out, shows lines, or loses signal.
  • The TV reboots or enters diagnostic mode after a VRR change or PC shutdown.
  • VRR works on a console but not a PC, or on AMD but not NVIDIA.
  • VRR works at 120 Hz but not 144 Hz.

Confirm which U8K you own

The North American Google TV range includes 55U8K, 65U8K, 75U8K, 85U8K, and 100U8K. European U8K/U8KQ models and Japanese U8K models can use different operating systems, menus, firmware, ports, and capabilities. Do not apply a U8KQ, U8H, U8R, U8N, Japanese, or European instruction or firmware file to a North American set. Japanese specifications are published separately at Hisense Japan.

What the U8K supports—and what that label does not guarantee

Hisense advertises 144 Hz variable refresh, HDMI 2.1 gaming features, automatic low-latency mode, and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro in its U8K materials (feature document; feature sheet). Independent testing found VRR operation up to 144 Hz, while 1080p/240 Hz did not retain normal full-resolution VRR behavior (RTINGS review).

VRR is the broad variable-refresh function, often using HDMI Forum VRR. AMD FreeSync is AMD’s implementation, and FreeSync Premium Pro adds display and HDR-related requirements. G-SYNC Compatible is NVIDIA’s adaptive-sync mode for compatible displays. A logo or menu label does not promise that every GPU generation, driver, resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode, cable, and firmware combination works simultaneously. AMD lists the required compatible display, GPU or APU, and current driver at its FreeSync overview.

The documented HDR and FreeSync conflict

RTINGS found that enabling the U8K’s TV-side FreeSync option disables HDR. The practical starting point for HDR gaming is therefore:

  • Leave the TV’s separate FreeSync toggle off.
  • Enable ordinary VRR on the TV and source.
  • Use HDR only after the SDR VRR signal is stable.

This is a mode interaction, not proof that FreeSync is absent. If you specifically require the FreeSync Premium Pro label, the trade-off on this model may be loss of HDR. Firmware can change behavior, so verify the result on your exact set. RTINGS documents the interaction and workaround in its U8K settings guide.

Older AMD cards have an additional limitation

RTINGS reports that Radeon RX 5000-series and older AMD cards cannot display HDR while FreeSync is enabled on the U8K. Identify the exact GPU model before treating this as a television fault. Newer hardware can still encounter the TV-side HDR conflict.

Build a known-good baseline

  1. Connect directly: remove an AV receiver, soundbar, switch, capture card, dock, adapter, or splitter while testing.
  2. Use a TV HDMI 2.1 input: RTINGS identifies two inputs capable of 4K up to 144 Hz; confirm the numbering in your regional manual and on-screen labels.
  3. Select Enhanced format: open the selected HDMI input’s settings and choose the Enhanced/expanded HDMI mode. Labels vary by firmware.
  4. Choose Game picture mode: this provides the intended low-latency behavior and PC 4:4:4 support.
  5. Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable: choose the shortest reliable cable available and bypass every intermediary device.
  6. Start at 4K/120 Hz SDR: this is the control condition. A cable that survives 120 Hz can still fail intermittently at 144 Hz.
  7. Enable VRR: keep the TV-side FreeSync toggle off initially.
  8. Enable HDR: turn it on in Windows or the console only after VRR is stable.
  9. Try 144 Hz last: failure only at 144 Hz points toward bandwidth margin, cable quality, firmware, GPU output limits, or a 144-Hz handshake.

For PC text clarity, keep Game mode, Enhanced format, and 4:4:4 output enabled as supported by your GPU and display (RTINGS settings guidance).

AMD Radeon troubleshooting

  1. Install the current Radeon Software: Adrenalin Edition driver.
  2. Open AMD Software and inspect the display section for FreeSync detection.
  3. Enable driver-side FreeSync only after the TV input is in Enhanced mode and connected directly.
  4. If HDR disappears, disable the TV-side FreeSync control and test ordinary VRR.
  5. If FreeSync is reported unsupported, test another HDMI 2.1 port, another certified cable, 4K/120 Hz, SDR before HDR, and a clean driver installation.

AMD notes that display presets and custom settings can disable FreeSync; its procedure and caveats are documented at AMD support. A “not supported” message can also mean a bad EDID handshake, wrong HDMI mode, unsupported timing, or an adapter—not that the U8K lacks the feature.

NVIDIA troubleshooting

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel and choose Set up G-SYNC.
  2. Enable G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible mode, select the U8K explicitly, and test both full-screen and windowed/full-screen options when offered.
  3. Check whether the TV’s VRR control becomes available, then test 4K/120 Hz before 4K/144 Hz.

Owners have reported that enabling G-SYNC Compatible makes a greyed-out TV VRR control available, but this is community evidence rather than an official Hisense requirement (owner report). Avoid DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters during diagnosis: DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI VRR are not automatically interchangeable (AVForums discussion).

Console setup

Use a direct connection, Enhanced/high-bandwidth HDMI mode, and the console’s own VRR option. Leave the TV’s separate FreeSync toggle off initially, confirm compatibility in the console’s video-information screen, and establish 4K/120 Hz before considering PC-only 144-Hz modes. Console HDMI Forum VRR is related to, but not identical with, AMD FreeSync.

Diagnose flicker, black screens, and artifacts

Owner reports describe flicker, lines, and intermittent VRR activation, but these reports combine different regions, firmware, GPUs, ports, and refresh rates (AVForums owners thread; line report; HDR/FreeSync report). Isolate one variable at a time:

  1. Drop 144 Hz to 120 Hz.
  2. Disable VRR.
  3. Disable HDR.
  4. Temporarily leave Game mode only for diagnosis.
  5. Verify Enhanced mode, then retest.
  6. Try another certified cable, HDMI 2.1 port, and source.

If the symptom occurs only with VRR, capture the exact resolution, refresh, HDR state, GPU driver, and port. If lines or black screens remain at 4K/60 or 4K/120 with VRR and HDR off, suspicion shifts toward hardware or the signal path.

Handle reboots and diagnostic mode safely

RTINGS observed occasional reboots or diagnostic-mode behavior when changing VRR settings or shutting down the connected PC; power-cycling recovered its test unit (RTINGS review). Turn the TV off, unplug it for several minutes, disconnect HDMI, reconnect the source directly, and retest at 4K/120 Hz. Check updates only through the correct regional Hisense support page. Firmware files are model-specific; Hisense’s 100U8K support page warns against using software for another listed model (support page).

Why 4K/144 Hz or 1080p/240 Hz may fail

  • The GPU may not support 4K/144 Hz over HDMI 2.1.
  • The cable, port, receiver, or adapter may be limiting bandwidth.
  • Enhanced mode may be off.
  • HDR, chroma, color depth, and refresh rate may exceed the link budget.
  • Your regional U8K variant may have different port capabilities.

A stable 4K/120 Hz result is a diagnostic milestone, not a guarantee that 144 Hz must work. The U8K can accept 1080p high-refresh signals, but RTINGS found that 1080p/240 Hz with VRR results in 72 Hz operation with resolution-halving behavior; accepting a 240-Hz signal is not the same as delivering full-resolution 240-Hz VRR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to request service or return the TV

  • Flicker persists at 4K/60 or 4K/120 with VRR and HDR disabled.
  • Multiple certified cables and sources reproduce the fault.
  • The TV repeatedly reboots or enters diagnostic mode.
  • Lines or artifacts remain after changing source, port, and settings.
  • Only one HDMI input fails while others work.
  • A correct regional firmware update or factory reset changes nothing.

Give support the exact model and region, firmware, HDMI port, source GPU or console, cable, timing, and whether HDR and VRR work independently. Use the regional Hisense support site rather than cross-region firmware or unverified repair instructions.

Quick symptom-to-fix guide

Symptom First test Likely interpretation
HDR vanishes with FreeSync Turn off TV FreeSync; leave VRR on Documented U8K mode conflict
Older AMD card cannot use HDR plus FreeSync Use ordinary VRR or identify the exact GPU Reported RX 5000-and-earlier limitation
VRR control is greyed out Enhanced HDMI, direct cable, enable AMD FreeSync or NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible Handshake or source-negotiation issue
Flicker or black flashes 120 Hz, new certified cable, VRR off Bandwidth, driver, firmware, or hardware path
4K/144 Hz missing Verify HDMI 2.1 input and GPU capability; test 4K/120 Timing, bandwidth, port, or regional limitation
Reboot or diagnostic mode Power-cycle, disconnect HDMI, retest 4K/120 VRR handshake instability or firmware behavior
