iOS 27’s most useful changes are easy to miss because many are small workflow improvements rather than headline Siri features. You can save a still frame from any video, filter Photos to pictures captured by the iPhone camera, pin your favorite Camera controls, separate alarm and ringtone behavior, create a Wallet pass from a paper ticket, and keep a weak Wi‑Fi connection usable with a cellular-data assist.
Some capabilities are conditional. Apple Intelligence requires newer iPhone hardware, a supported language and, initially, availability outside the European Union on iOS. Apple also warns that features can vary by iPhone model, region, language and carrier. The instructions below separate broadly available iOS 27 tools from hardware-, language-, carrier- and region-dependent ones.
Start with the iOS 27 gems that work immediately
These changes do not require an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone: video-frame capture, the Captured by Me photo filter, pinned Camera controls, Safari’s page-change alerts, independent sound controls, Connectivity Assist, custom Wallet passes and new FaceTime camera options. The exact wording of a control can change between a beta and the final release, so install the latest iOS 27 update before troubleshooting a missing option.

Save a frame from an iPhone video as a full-resolution photo
iOS 27 can turn any frame of a video into a separate image in Photos. This is useful when a moving subject looks best for only an instant and a screenshot would include playback controls or a reduced capture of the display.

- Open Photos and open the video.
- Play it, then pause at the frame you want. Drag the timeline one frame at a time if necessary.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Save Video Frame as Photo.
The result is written to Photos as a standalone image at full resolution, according to Tom’s Guide’s June 12, 2026 hands-on report. It is separate from the original video, so editing or deleting the still does not alter the video.
Use Apple Intelligence for more advanced photo edits
On an eligible iPhone with Apple Intelligence enabled, Photos can reframe an image, extend its borders and remove distracting objects with greater precision. These tools are separate from ordinary crop and markup controls, and their availability follows the hardware, language and regional limits described later in this guide.
Find only the pictures you took with the iPhone camera
The new Captured by Me collection helps when a library is crowded with screenshots, downloaded images and pictures received in messaging apps. Tom’s Guide reports the path as Photos > Collections > Utilities > Captured by Me. The view filters for photos taken with the iPhone camera, making it quicker to locate original shots without deleting or moving anything.
Force iCloud Photos to sync before you travel or hand over a phone
iOS 27 adds a temporary way to request an immediate iCloud Photos sync. Tom’s Guide reports that the mode can be enabled for one day, after which normal syncing resumes. That is useful before boarding a flight, switching devices or giving an iPhone to someone else.
- Open Photos and go to the iCloud Photos status area, where the library shows whether it is syncing.
- Choose the new immediate-sync option displayed there and confirm the one-day setting.
- Keep the iPhone on power and a reliable network while the pending items upload.
The final release may use a different label or place the control in the account or iCloud Photos status panel. If you do not see it, update iOS, confirm that Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos is enabled, and check that you have enough iCloud storage. A forced sync cannot upload more data than your available storage or network connection permits.
Pin the Camera controls you use most
Apple’s iOS 27 Camera guide lets you pin frequently used tools above the camera frame. Pinning reduces the number of taps needed for controls you reach for repeatedly, such as exposure or another shooting adjustment.

- Open Camera.
- Open the Camera controls editor or controls menu.
- Choose the tools you use most and pin them to the area above the viewfinder.
- Return to the viewfinder and test the arrangement in both portrait and landscape orientations.
Control names and the editor’s exact location can differ by iPhone model because some cameras do not expose the same options. If a tool cannot be pinned, it is usually a model-specific limitation rather than a fault with your installation.

Safari in iOS 27 can use Apple Intelligence to group tabs by topic and can alert you when a page changes. Notify Me is designed for pages such as product listings that change price or show stock again.
- Open the page in Safari.
- Open the page or tab controls and select Notify Me when it is offered.
- Approve notifications and leave the alert active for the period you need.
Tab grouping is automatic rather than a replacement for manually named Tab Groups. Because both functions can use server-side intelligence, the language, region, device and account may determine whether the controls appear. Review Safari notification permissions if an alert does not arrive.
Control alarm volume without changing the ringtone
Tom’s Guide reports that iOS 27 separates volume controls for alarms, ringtones, timers and other system sounds. This solves the common problem of making a morning alarm loud enough while keeping the phone’s ring volume quiet, or the reverse.
- Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
- Adjust the alarm slider independently from the ringtone and alert slider when those controls are shown.
- Set timer and other system-sound levels to suit your routine, then test with a short timer before relying on the setting overnight.
The physical volume buttons can still follow the “Change with Buttons” preference. If button presses alter the wrong level, turn that preference off and use the individual sliders instead.
Let Clock ask before skipping a weekday alarm
Clock can use calendar and regional-holiday information to ask whether a weekday alarm should be skipped before a day off. This is a prompt, not an automatic deletion of your alarm schedule. Check the date and choose the option you want; holiday calendars and local rules determine what the phone recognizes.

Keep weak Wi‑Fi usable with Connectivity Assist
Connectivity Assist can combine cellular data with a weak Wi‑Fi connection so pages and apps remain usable when Wi‑Fi technically remains connected but performs poorly.
- Open Settings > Wi‑Fi.
- Turn on Connectivity Assist.
- Watch your carrier’s data counter after using it in a weak-signal area.
The trade-off is higher mobile-data consumption. In Tom’s Guide’s hands-on testing, the tester observed about 300 MB over 48 hours; that is one person’s experience, not a universal benchmark. The amount can change with video, cloud backups, app updates, signal quality and your carrier’s network. Avoid enabling it on a limited data plan unless you have checked your allowance, and turn it off when dependable Wi‑Fi is available.
Turn a paper ticket or membership card into a custom Wallet pass
iOS 27 lets you create a custom Apple Wallet pass from a physical ticket or another item that does not have an official issuer-provided pass. Tom’s Guide reports templates for membership and event passes, with editable fields such as pass name, location, admission type, membership number and background design.
- Open Wallet and tap the add control.
- Choose the option for creating a custom pass rather than adding a bank card or an issuer’s digital pass.
- Select a membership or event template.
- Enter the relevant details, such as the name, location, admission type and membership number.
- Choose a background design and save the pass.
This is a convenient visual record, not proof that a venue’s scanner will accept it. Keep the original paper ticket or the issuer’s official barcode when admission depends on a specific code, encryption or identity check. The final build may use slightly different labels for the custom-pass flow.
Use FaceTime’s front-and-back camera view
Dual Capture lets you share the front and back camera views during a FaceTime call. It can show your face while also showing a product, room or event in front of you, without repeatedly switching cameras.
- Start a FaceTime call.
- Open the in-call camera controls.
- Select Dual Capture and grant any camera permission requested.
- Turn it off from the same controls when you want to return to a single camera.
Apple also documents translated captions for FaceTime when participants speak different languages. Caption availability depends on supported languages and the device or region. Captions are not a guarantee that every expression, name or technical term will be translated accurately.

Ask Siri about what the Camera sees
Apple presents a Siri mode in Camera for visual search. Point the camera at an object or scene, invoke the visual-search control and review Siri’s result before acting on it. Treat the result as assistance rather than authentication: visual matches can be incomplete, and the feature follows Apple Intelligence eligibility and language rules.

Use the quieter Health and Maps additions
Cycle Tracking for perimenopause and menopause symptoms
Apple says Cycle Tracking can log menopause and perimenopause symptoms and provide educational resources when recorded patterns are suggestive of perimenopause. Add symptoms consistently in the Health app so the pattern is based on more than one entry. This is an information feature, not a diagnosis; discuss concerning symptoms with a qualified clinician.
Explore Maps Flyover and Local Lists
Maps Flyover uses aerial imagery and Visual Intelligence models to provide a more immersive view of supported places. Availability depends on the location and the imagery Apple has for it. Local Lists are available in the United States only, so the absence of the feature elsewhere is a regional limit rather than a damaged installation.
Use the expanded child-safety controls
Apple’s iOS 27 guide names several family-safety changes:
- Setup Assistant app selection: parents and guardians can make it easier to choose which apps are available during setup.
- Ask to Browse: a child can request approval for a website before opening it.
- Communication Safety: protections can respond to detected nudity or gore.
These controls work alongside the family’s existing Screen Time and communication settings. Review them on each child’s device and account, because age, region and account configuration can affect the prompts shown.

Apple’s iOS 27 availability information lists Apple Intelligence on all iPhone 16 models and later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. An iPhone 15 or 15 Plus is not included in that list merely because it can install iOS 27.

Apple says Apple Intelligence starts in English and requires Siri and the device language to be set to a supported language. Apple also says the feature is initially unavailable in the European Union on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS. Availability can change as Apple expands languages and regions, so check the current Apple Intelligence settings on the device you actually use.
Expect server-side limits even on a compatible phone
Some Apple Intelligence requests are processed with Apple’s servers. Apple’s support guidance says daily usage limits can vary by feature, request complexity, system demand and policy. A compatible iPhone therefore does not guarantee unlimited requests every day. If a feature disappears or reports that a limit has been reached, check the status later rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
Can one phone number be used on two iPhones?
iOS 27 does not add a universal switch that duplicates one mobile number on two iPhones. Using the same number on two devices depends on your carrier’s service, often named Number Share, MultiSIM, companion SIM or a similar product. Ask the carrier whether it supports two active SIMs or eSIMs for one number, what calls and texts each device receives, and whether there is an extra fee. Without such a carrier feature, moving the SIM or eSIM normally moves the number rather than sharing it.

Apple’s iOS 27 materials and hands-on coverage connect AirPods Pro 3 with a GymKit-related workflow for compatible cardio equipment and heart-rate tracking. This is relevant only when the exercise machine supports the required GymKit interaction and your region, firmware and equipment are compatible. It is not a reason to buy the earbuds for ordinary listening, and unsupported gym equipment cannot be made compatible by changing an iPhone setting.
Why a hidden feature may be missing
- Model: camera tools, Apple Intelligence and some visual features vary by iPhone generation.
- Language: set Siri and the device language to a supported language for Apple Intelligence functions.
- Region: EU rollout restrictions and U.S.-only Local Lists are explicit examples of regional limits.
- Carrier: number sharing, some communication services and network behavior depend on the carrier.
- Beta versus final build: a control reported in hands-on coverage may move or receive a new label before release.
- Permissions and storage: Photos sync, Safari alerts, FaceTime captions and Wallet creation need the relevant permissions, account access and, for iCloud Photos, sufficient storage.
Apple’s support guide summarizes the broad rule: “New features and apps may vary depending on your iPhone model, region, language, and carrier.” Use that as the first diagnostic check before assuming an installation failed.
A practical order for trying the gems
- Start with Photos: save a video frame, open Captured by Me and test the one-day immediate-sync option if you need a library uploaded now.
- Personalize daily controls: pin Camera tools and set independent alarm, ringtone and timer levels.
- Protect your data plan: enable Connectivity Assist only after checking your cellular allowance.
- Prepare travel and events: create a custom Wallet pass, then keep the original ticket if the venue requires an issuer barcode.
- Test communication features: try FaceTime Dual Capture, translated captions and Safari Notify Me with non-critical calls and pages first.
- Check eligibility before expecting AI: verify the iPhone model, Siri language and regional availability before troubleshooting Apple Intelligence tools.
The bottom line
For most iPhone owners, the best iOS 27 discoveries are the small controls that remove friction: a clean video still, a camera layout that matches your habits, a separate alarm level, a temporary iCloud Photos push and a Wallet pass for something that never had a digital one. Connectivity Assist is powerful but can consume cellular data. Apple Intelligence adds deeper editing, Safari automation and visual search only on supported hardware, language and regions, so treat eligibility—not a hidden toggle—as the deciding factor.
