What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start by checking whether your PC is eligible, then back up your data, install pending Windows 10 updates, free storage, and verify your software and hardware. If Microsoft offers the upgrade through Windows Update, that is usually the safest path. Use Installation Assistant only on a compatible x64 PC, and use installation media when you specifically need a reinstall or clean installation.
1. Check whether your PC can run Windows 11
Do not begin by downloading an installer. First confirm eligibility with Microsoft’s PC Health Check app. It provides a comprehensive result and can identify hardware or compatibility holds. You can also open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10 and select Check for updates; an eligible device may eventually receive the Windows 11 offer there.
- The PC must run a currently supported Windows 10 version.
- It must meet Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements, including a compatible processor and the firmware and security features required by Microsoft.
- If Windows Update does not offer the upgrade, install all current Windows 10 updates, restart, and check again. Microsoft may delay the offer until the device is fully updated or a compatibility hold is cleared.
A PC that fails PC Health Check should not be forced through an unofficial bypass without understanding the support and security consequences. Plan for a supported replacement or another documented option instead.
2. Back up files before changing Windows
A normal in-place upgrade is designed to migrate your files and applications, but Microsoft still recommends backing up before installation. Make a backup you can actually restore, not merely a second copy that has never been tested.

Protect the folders you use most
- Documents
- Pictures
- Desktop
- Downloads and any project folders stored elsewhere
- Browser bookmarks, password-manager data, email archives, game saves, and application-specific files
Confirm recovery
- Open several backed-up files from the backup destination.
- Record the backup location and encryption password, if applicable.
- Make sure you can sign in to the Microsoft account or cloud service used for synchronization.
- Keep license keys, subscription details, and installers for important applications available.
An external USB drive is a practical destination for a full file backup. Do not use the same drive for both your only backup and Windows installation media.
3. Prepare Windows 10 and your hardware
Install pending updates
In Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, install every available Windows 10 update, restart when prompted, and check again. A current system is more likely to receive the validated Windows 11 offer and reduces avoidable installer failures.
Free enough storage
Remove temporary files and unused applications if the system drive is nearly full. Installation Assistant currently requires at least 9 GB of free disk space, although leaving additional headroom is sensible for downloaded packages, temporary files, and the first Windows 11 updates.

Check drivers and applications
- Visit the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support page and check Windows 11 driver and firmware guidance.
- Update graphics, storage, chipset, network, printer, and docking-station drivers when the manufacturer provides Windows 11-compatible versions.
- Confirm that security software, VPN clients, specialist business tools, and older peripherals support Windows 11.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, printers, docks, and external drives during the upgrade. Reconnect them after Windows 11 starts successfully.
4. Choose the installation method
| Method | Best use | Eligibility and requirements | Data-preservation risk | Recovery complexity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Standard upgrade on an eligible Windows 10 PC | Microsoft validates the device and offers the upgrade when ready; install current Windows 10 updates first | Lowest of the three when you select the normal upgrade | Lowest manual effort |
| Installation Assistant | Manual in-place upgrade when Windows Update has not offered Windows 11 | Compatible x64 processor, Windows 10 version 2004 or later, valid Windows 10 or Windows 11 license, and at least 9 GB free space; it does not run on Arm-based PCs | Normally preserves files and applications, but a backup remains essential | Moderate; you manage the download and restart sequence |
| Installation media | Reinstalling Windows, repairing a system, or performing a clean installation | Media Creation Tool and a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB, or suitable DVD; all content on the selected media is deleted | Highest if you boot from the media and choose a clean install, because the target drive can be wiped | Highest; you may need to restore files, drivers, applications, and settings |
Prefer Windows Update when it is offered
Windows Update is the least manual route because Microsoft has validated the upgrade for that device and current software state. Select Download and install, keep the PC connected to power, and allow multiple restarts. Do not switch off the computer while installation is in progress.
Use Installation Assistant carefully
Installation Assistant is an in-place option for compatible x64 systems. Verify the version, architecture, license, and 9 GB storage requirement before running it. It is not compatible with Arm-based PCs.
Use installation media only for the job you intend
Create media with Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool on a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB capacity. The tool erases the selected drive, so move any existing files first. Starting setup.exe inside Windows can provide an in-place upgrade; booting from the USB and selecting a clean-install path can erase the target drive. Read each partition and formatting screen carefully before confirming.

5. A safe upgrade sequence
- Run PC Health Check and resolve any reported incompatibility.
- Complete your file backup and verify that important files open from it.
- Install all pending Windows 10 updates, restart, and check Windows Update again.
- Free storage, update essential drivers and applications, and disconnect nonessential peripherals.
- Choose Windows Update, Installation Assistant, or media according to the comparison above.
- Connect the PC to reliable power and internet access. Save work and close applications.
- Start the upgrade and let Windows restart as often as required; do not interrupt it.
- After the first Windows 11 login, check Device Manager, Windows Update, activation, applications, printers, networking, and your backed-up files.
6. If the upgrade fails or Windows 11 does not suit you
Before installation finishes
Note the exact error, restart once if the installer requests it, and check available storage, updates, drivers, and disconnected peripherals. Do not repeatedly retry a failed clean installation until you know which disk and partition the installer is targeting.
Rolling back after a successful upgrade
Microsoft provides a 10-day window after an upgrade to move back to Windows 10 while keeping the files and data migrated to Windows 11. Open Settings > System > Recovery and choose Go back if that option is available. Keep the recovery files in place and do not delete the previous Windows installation while deciding.
Returning after the rollback window
After 10 days, Microsoft says you must back up your files and use a clean installation to return to Windows 10. That process removes the existing Windows installation, so obtain Windows 10 installation media, confirm you have drivers and application installers, and verify the backup before erasing anything.

7. What Windows 10 support ending means
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. An existing PC can continue to run, but it no longer has the same supported security posture. If the hardware cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, a supported replacement PC or another documented, security-conscious plan is the responsible next step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upgrade without losing my files?
A normal in-place upgrade through Windows Update or Installation Assistant is intended to migrate files and applications, but Microsoft recommends a verified backup before you begin. A clean installation from bootable media can erase the target drive.
What size USB drive is needed for Windows 11 installation media?
Use a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Media Creation Tool deletes the contents of the selected drive.

Can an Arm-based PC use Installation Assistant?
No. Microsoft’s current Installation Assistant requirements specify a compatible x64 processor; the assistant does not run on Arm-based PCs.
Can I go back to Windows 10 after upgrading?
Microsoft allows a rollback for 10 days after the upgrade while keeping migrated files and data. After that, returning requires a backup followed by a clean Windows 10 installation.
