AI is turning couponing from a manual search into an assisted checkout process. Shopping extensions and retailer apps can predict which offers fit a shopper, test promo codes, compare prices, apply rewards and send price-drop alerts. The convenience comes with a trade-off: these services may use browsing and purchase data, so shoppers need clear explanations, sensible permissions and a way to stay in control.

From searching for coupons to letting software do the matching

Traditional couponing required a shopper to search coupon sites, clip newspaper offers, copy codes and check loyalty apps one by one. AI-assisted tools move much of that work into the shopping session itself.

Stage What the shopper does What the software does
Before Searches coupon pages, clips paper offers and manually checks loyalty balances. Provides separate, mostly static listings.
Now Shops on a supported site and reviews the offers surfaced at checkout. Recognizes the merchant, tests available codes, compares prices, personalizes offers and may apply a reward or send a price-drop alert.
Next Sets limits and approves important purchase decisions. An agent may search, compare and execute parts of a purchase, subject to the shopper’s permission.

There is no published universal figure for the share of coupons selected or redeemed by AI. Current evidence instead measures shopper adoption, expectations and the features offered by individual services.

What AI can do during a coupon-enabled purchase

Personalize the offer

Instead of showing every visitor the same promotion, retailers can use a shopper’s context to select a relevant discount or message. Walmart’s 2024 adaptive-retail research describes the expectation that retailers will predict individual needs and present suggestions at the right moment. In RRD’s 2024 findings, 55% of consumers said personalized discounts make them feel valued. Personalization can mean a discount matched to a product category, loyalty status, location or timing rather than a generic sitewide code.

Test codes automatically

Browser extensions can try multiple codes in the cart and report whether one works. PayPal Honey says it tests codes at checkout on more than 30,000 sites. Capital One Shopping describes testing community-sourced promo codes as part of its shopping assistance. A failed code is removed from the process instead of leaving the shopper to guess which strings to try.

Compare the total price

A coupon is not necessarily the cheapest option. Capital One Shopping says its service compares prices across sellers, helping a shopper check whether a lower list price elsewhere outweighs a code on the original site. The useful comparison is the final delivered cost, including shipping, taxes, minimum-spend rules and any subscription requirement.

Find rewards and future savings

Some services surface cashback or other rewards and can alert a shopper when a tracked item drops in price. Wildfire Systems and Big Village reported in July 2025 that 78% of 1,000 surveyed U.S. adults were more interested in cashback rewards and digital coupons; 61% said they had used AI tools. Those figures describe interest and use of AI tools, not guaranteed savings on every transaction.

Move toward agentic shopping

An AI shopping agent could eventually search for an item, compare merchants and carry out an approved purchase sequence. Visa’s 2025 survey found that roughly two-thirds of respondents used or would use AI shopping agents to save time and find better prices. That does not mean shoppers are ready to surrender every decision: Walmart’s 2025 research found 46% were somewhat or very unlikely to let a digital assistant handle an entire shopping trip.

Why adoption is growing—and where it stalls

Finding What it indicates
70% of consumers were familiar with AI in retail, and more than half had a positive impression (SPAR Group, 2025; survey fielded December 2024 among more than 1,000 U.S. consumers). Awareness and general sentiment are high enough for shoppers to try AI-assisted offers.
60% of U.S. shoppers wanted AI-powered shopping features (DHL, 2025). Convenience features are becoming an expectation, not merely an experiment.
Roughly two-thirds would use or already use agents to save time and find better prices (Visa, 2025). Savings and reduced effort are the strongest practical reasons to adopt the tools.
46% were unlikely to delegate an entire shopping trip to a digital assistant (Walmart, 2025). Many shoppers prefer assistance with bounded tasks rather than full automation.

The pattern is consistent: people welcome help when the task is easy to verify, but want approval over the final purchase, merchant and amount.

Trust, privacy and control are part of the coupon decision

Shoppers want an explanation

Nearly nine in ten consumers in Visa’s 2025 research wanted transparency into how shopping agents make decisions. A useful explanation should identify why an offer appeared, whether a ranking includes sponsored results, what conditions apply and what the agent changed in the cart.

The data behind personalization

Capital One Shopping’s privacy policy lists browsing, product, transaction, purchase-history, location and coupon-use data among possible categories. Honey’s privacy statement describes shopping-history information and inferences used for personalization. These disclosures do not establish misuse; they show why a shopper should read the current policy and permission prompts before installing an extension or connecting a loyalty account.

The delivery gap

Adobe’s 2025 research found that 87% of consumers expected personal data to be handled responsibly and securely, while only 46% said brands were delivering effectively. The same study found 69% wanted retailers to anticipate needs with relevant offers or information at the right moment, but only 35% said brands delivered that experience effectively. Better targeting therefore has to be matched by better data governance.

  • Install an extension only when its permissions make sense for the task.
  • Check whether personalization can be limited, paused or turned off.
  • Review the merchant’s coupon exclusions, minimum spend and expiration date before paying.
  • Keep an independent record of the original price and final total when a tool applies a reward automatically.
  • Remove access or uninstall the tool if its data practices or explanations are unclear.

Digital growth does not eliminate paper coupons

AI is expanding digital assistance rather than replacing every established format. RRD’s 2024 report found that 51% of consumers preferred coupon books in newspapers or mail. That result is dated, and the report’s underlying awareness-to-action study was conducted in August 2023, but it demonstrates that print and non-digital preferences still matter. Retailers that offer only app-based personalization can miss shoppers who prefer physical offers or do not want shopping activity tracked.

How to compare AI coupon tools

Features and availability change by merchant, country and date. Use the following questions before choosing a service.

Comparison point What to verify Examples from documented services
Automation depth Does it merely suggest an offer, or does it test and apply codes? Honey emphasizes automatic code testing at checkout; Capital One Shopping describes testing codes and surfacing savings.
Merchant coverage Are your usual stores and country supported? Honey says more than 30,000 sites; Capital One Shopping’s coverage is not stated here.
Price comparison Does it compare sellers and calculate the delivered total? Capital One Shopping emphasizes price comparison; verify shipping and other charges yourself.
Personalization Which signals drive recommendations, and can targeting be limited? Policies describe use of shopping history or related data for personalization.
Rewards Are cashback rates, exclusions and eligibility clear for your region? Reward terms can vary by country and merchant; check the current terms.
Privacy permissions What browsing, transaction, location or purchase-history access is requested? Compare the current privacy policy with the permissions shown during installation.
Explainability and control Can you see why an offer was selected and approve actions before checkout? Prefer tools that show conditions and let you reject an automatic action.

A cautious workflow for using AI with coupons

  1. Start with the retailer. Sign in to the official loyalty program or app first; retailer-issued offers may have clearer eligibility than third-party codes.
  2. Check the tool’s scope. Confirm the merchant, country, supported browser and whether the service is testing codes, comparing prices, offering cashback or doing all four.
  3. Read the offer conditions. Verify expiration, excluded products, minimum spend, one-use limits and whether rewards can be combined.
  4. Review the cart manually. Compare the pre-discount price, shipping, taxes and any subscription charge with the post-discount total.
  5. Approve the final action. Keep automatic purchasing disabled unless you have set a spending limit, preferred merchants and a clear approval step.
  6. Audit the result. Save the receipt and confirm that the promised discount or reward appears in the order record; contact the merchant if it does not.

What AI couponing still cannot guarantee

  • A code will work: merchant rules can change between discovery and checkout.
  • The lowest total price: a larger discount can still lose to a cheaper competing seller or different shipping option.
  • Universal coverage: features, supported countries and rewards vary by service and merchant.
  • Perfect recommendations: personalization is based on available signals and can be wrong or irrelevant.
  • Permanent terms: privacy policies, reward eligibility and extension behavior are volatile, so check the current disclosures.

AI makes coupon use faster and more contextual, but the shopper remains responsible for checking the merchant, conditions, total cost and data permissions. The strongest use case today is controlled assistance—finding and testing savings while leaving the final decision with the person paying.
