The current price-matching policies for Best Buy, Walmart, and others are not interchangeable. Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Staples still offer meaningful competitor matching; Walmart generally matches Walmart.com only for eligible in-store purchases, while Target mainly matches its own prices and Target Circle offers. Marketplace listings, clearance, special promotions, and mismatched models are the most common rejection reasons.
This U.S. policy comparison reflects official retailer pages checked around August 18, 2026. Retailers can change terms without notice, so the linked policy page controls if a store employee’s explanation conflicts with the written rules.
Key takeaways
- Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Staples have the broadest current competitor price-matching programs among the retailers covered here.
- Walmart stores may match an identical Walmart.com price at checkout, but Walmart.com does not provide general competitor or post-purchase price matching.
- Target’s current policy focuses on Target.com, the applicable Target store, and eligible Target Circle offers—not Amazon or Walmart.
- Home Depot advertises a 30-day post-purchase adjustment period, while Target and Staples generally provide 14 days.
- A qualifying lower price normally must be for the exact same item, sold directly by the retailer, in stock, and available under comparable fulfillment terms.
Here are the price-matching policies for Best Buy, Walmart, and others
The fastest way to compare these policies is to separate broad competitor matchers from retailers that mainly adjust their own prices.

Which stores still price-match competitors?
Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Staples are the strongest choices when the lower price comes from another retailer. Walmart and Target are better understood as internal price-adjustment programs, not broad promises to match any major competitor.
Best Buy: Best Buy’s current guarantee, effective January 16, 2026, covers identical, new, immediately available products from qualifying local and online competitors. Best Buy maintains a separate qualified-competitor list. The competitor’s item must generally be available for shipping or store pickup, and the product must match in brand, model number, and color.
Home Depot: Home Depot matches eligible products from selected local and online retailers, including Lowe’s, Menards, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Target. Online comparisons require the competing product to be available to ship to the shopper’s location. Home Depot’s current page advertises a 30-day post-purchase adjustment period.
Lowe’s: Lowe’s matches qualifying identical, in-stock products from eligible local and online retailers. Lowe’s includes shipping or delivery costs in the comparison, which can make the result different from a simple sticker-price comparison. Lowe’s does not match one Lowe’s store’s price to another store or one ZIP code’s Lowes.com price to another ZIP code.
Staples: Staples has separate in-store and Staples.com guarantees. Competitors commonly include Office Depot/OfficeMax, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and Amazon.com, subject to the full policy and seller restrictions. Staples generally allows an eligible post-purchase claim within 14 days.
How does Best Buy’s price-match guarantee work?
Best Buy matches an identical, new product from a qualifying competitor when the competitor’s product is currently available and the competing price can be verified. The current Best Buy policy is effective January 16, 2026.
What Best Buy usually requires
- The product must be new and identical, including the brand, model number, and color.
- The competitor must be on Best Buy’s qualifying list or otherwise meet the policy’s local-competitor requirements.
- The competitor must have the product immediately available for shipping or store pickup.
- The lower offer must be verifiable through a current advertisement or live website.
- A request is generally limited to one price match per identical item for a customer or household.
Best Buy excludes marketplace sellers, clearance, open-box, refurbished, limited-quantity offers, bundles, coupons, financing offers, services, and many Black Friday, Thanksgiving-period, and other special-event prices. Competitor service prices, including delivery and installation charges, are not treated as lower merchandise prices for the match.

A lower later Best Buy price may qualify during the applicable return and exchange period, but the policy does not establish one universal number of days for every transaction. Online shoppers can request review by chat or phone; in-store shoppers can show the current qualifying price to an employee.
Does Walmart price-match competitors?
Walmart generally does not match competitor prices. A Walmart U.S. store may match an eligible Walmart.com price for an identical item, but Walmart.com does not offer general competitor price matching or a general post-purchase adjustment for a later price decrease.
Walmart’s store-versus-online guidance says the request must be made during checkout, and the store manager on duty has final decision authority. The product generally must be sold and shipped by Walmart rather than by a Walmart Marketplace seller.

Walmart excludes competitor prices, Marketplace listings, Rollbacks, clearance, Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, bundles, rebates, financing offers, and other special prices. Walmart’s in-store Walmart.com matching rules do not apply in the same way in Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, so shoppers in those locations should check the current policy before relying on a match.
The practical decision is simple: use Walmart when the lower price is on Walmart.com and you are buying in a participating U.S. store, not when you expect Walmart.com to match Best Buy, Amazon, Target, or another competitor after an online purchase.
What does Target’s current price-match policy cover?
Target’s current policy primarily matches Target.com, the current applicable Target store price, and eligible Target Circle deals. Target’s official policy does not currently list Amazon or Walmart as qualifying competitors.
Target allows a qualifying price adjustment for up to 14 days after purchase. Shoppers can request the adjustment at checkout or through Guest Services. For an online price or digital ad, show the offer on a mobile device; Target may require account or phone verification when the claimed price comes from Target Circle.
Target’s app pricing can depend on the selected store, and Target warns that price and availability vary by location. An in-store request generally uses the current store’s price; an in-store purchase cannot simply use the price of a different Target store. Target also excludes clearance, coupons, gift-card offers, bundles, financing, services, pharmacy and clinic items, preorders, and certain Target Plus cross-seller matches.

Target’s policy includes geographic limitations for some Target.com or app matches in Alaska and Hawaii. Confirm the current policy for the specific store and item before purchasing.
How do Home Depot and Lowe’s compare?
Home Depot and Lowe’s are both useful for exact home-improvement products, but shipping, seller identity, location, and promotion type determine whether a request qualifies.
| Decision point | Home Depot | Lowe’s |
|---|---|---|
| Competitor scope | Selected local and online competitors, including Lowe’s, Menards, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Target | Qualifying local and online retailers |
| Online availability | Competitor must be able to ship the identical item to the shopper’s location | Online retailer and item must meet policy validation and availability rules |
| Shipping and delivery | Shipping eligibility matters; do not assume installation or service costs are included | Shipping or delivery cost is included in the comparison |
| Post-purchase treatment | Current page advertises up to 30 days | Policy emphasizes matching at purchase; verify later adjustments |
| Common seller exclusions | Marketplace sellers, membership retailers, auction sites | Marketplace sellers and membership-based wholesalers |
| Promotion exclusions | Clearance, limited-time promotions, special orders, and volume pricing | Clearance, rebates, BOGO offers, coupons, seasonal events, and other special pricing |
For either retailer, compare the full delivered merchandise price and confirm the exact SKU. A lower online headline price is not enough if the item cannot ship to the address, is sold by a marketplace vendor, or includes different accessories or service terms.
What is Staples’ price-match policy?
Staples generally matches an identical, in-stock product sold by a listed competitor and usually allows an eligible adjustment within 14 days. Staples’ in-store and Staples.com rules must be treated separately.
In a Staples store, acceptable proof may include an advertisement, store signage, a mobile offer, or an eligible screenshot, depending on the offer. For a Staples.com request, the policy says screenshots and pictures are not accepted; customer service must be able to verify the live offer. The distinction makes a live product page safer than relying on a saved image.

Staples excludes third-party products, many technology and print services, marketing services, gift cards, postage, clearance, and certain promotional prices. Before asking for a match, verify the competitor, seller, model, warranty, service-plan provider and terms. Staples specifically treats warranty and service-plan differences as relevant to whether products are identical.
What does “identical item” mean for a price match?
An identical item normally has the same brand, full model number, size, color or finish, quantity, weight, features, included accessories, warranty, and applicable service-plan terms. A product title alone is not reliable proof.
A different finish, regional model number, storage capacity, package quantity, included accessory, warranty provider, or installation package can make two listings non-identical. Compare the complete model number and specifications before submitting a request. Best Buy specifically emphasizes brand, model number, color, and new condition; Staples also considers warranty and service-plan details.
Does the lower-priced product have to be in stock?
Usually, yes. The competing item generally must be available for immediate purchase, shipping, pickup, or delivery under comparable conditions.
Home Depot and Lowe’s expressly focus on whether an online item can be shipped to the customer’s location. Best Buy requires immediate availability for shipping or store pickup. An “out of stock,” preorder, backorder, “starting at” price, or location that cannot serve the shopper will usually fail even when the advertised number is lower.
Do marketplace sellers qualify for price matching?
Usually, no. The relevant question is who sold and fulfilled the item, not merely which website displays the listing.
Inspect the “sold by” and “shipped by” fields on Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and other platforms. A product displayed on Amazon.com may be sold by an Amazon Marketplace merchant; a product displayed on Walmart.com may be sold by Walmart Marketplace. Marketplace prices are commonly excluded by Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart, Staples, and other policies. Do not describe a marketplace offer as the retailer’s own price without checking the seller identity.

Are sale prices, coupons, and loyalty offers eligible?
“Sale price” is not a sufficient eligibility test because retailers distinguish ordinary advertised prices from excluded promotional prices.
Common exclusions include clearance, closeout, liquidation, going-out-of-business pricing, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, flash sales, daily or hourly deals, limited-quantity offers, coupons, promo codes, mail-in rebates, financing offers, gift-card promotions, BOGO offers, bundles, pricing errors, volume pricing, membership-only prices, and selected loyalty offers.
Best Buy, Lowe’s, and other retailers commonly exclude prices available only to selected loyalty or membership groups. Target Circle offers can qualify under Target’s own policy, but a Target Circle offer should not automatically be treated as a qualifying competitor price elsewhere. Warehouse-club prices, paid memberships, military discounts, and targeted customer offers need separate review.

How do shipping, pickup, and services affect the comparison?
Shipping and service treatment varies by retailer, so compare the cost of the eligible merchandise under the specific policy rather than comparing headline prices alone.

- Home Depot: The online competitor must be able to ship to the shopper’s location, but the current policy should not be read as a promise to match installation or other service costs.
- Best Buy: Competitor service prices, including delivery and installation charges, are excluded.
- Target: Product services and service offers are excluded.
- Staples: Many technology, print, marketing, and other services are outside the merchandise guarantee.
A cheaper installation, warranty, labor package, delivery service, or protection plan is not necessarily a lower price for the product itself.
Are online and in-store prices interchangeable?
Online and in-store prices are not automatically interchangeable because retailers apply different location, channel, and seller rules.
Best Buy generally allows its online and app price to be considered for an in-store purchase and its in-store price for an online or app purchase, subject to the guarantee. Target similarly distinguishes Target.com, the applicable local store, and app pricing, but an in-store match generally cannot use another Target store’s price. Walmart treats a store purchase and a Walmart.com order differently: the store may match Walmart.com at checkout, while Walmart.com has no general matching program. Staples maintains separate in-store and Staples.com procedures. Lowe’s does not match one Lowe’s store’s price to another store or one ZIP code’s Lowes.com price to another.
How can you make a successful price-match request?
Prepare the evidence before paying whenever possible; an in-store request is usually easier when the product, seller, stock, and current price can be verified immediately.

- Identify the exact item. Record the brand, complete model number, size, color, quantity, features, included accessories, warranty, and service-plan terms.
- Confirm the seller. Verify that the lower price is sold directly by the named retailer, not by a marketplace seller.
- Check stock and fulfillment. Confirm that the competing item is currently available and can ship to, be picked up in, or be delivered to the relevant location.
- Check the offer type. Look for clearance, coupons, rebates, bundles, gift cards, financing, membership restrictions, limited quantities, and special-event language.
- Capture usable proof. Save or open the product page or advertisement showing the price, model number, seller, stock status, location, date, and shipping cost.
- Ask before paying when possible. In a store, use the cashier or customer service desk. Online, use the retailer’s approved chat or phone channel.
- For a later adjustment, provide the receipt or order number. Check that the request falls within the applicable window: 14 days for Target, generally 14 days for Staples, 30 days for Home Depot, or the applicable return period for Best Buy.
- Ask why a request was denied. Determine whether the issue is seller identity, stock, model mismatch, promotion type, location, proof format, or timing.
- Do not rely on a screenshot alone. Staples.com specifically rejects screenshots and pictures for online claims, and other retailers may require a live, verifiable offer.
Copyable price-match checklist
- Exact brand and full model number
- Matching size, color, quantity, features, accessories, and warranty
- Direct retailer seller confirmed
- Current stock and shipping or pickup availability confirmed
- Final eligible price, including applicable shipping or delivery
- No clearance, coupon, rebate, bundle, membership, or special-event exclusion
- Current live product page or acceptable advertisement
- Receipt or order number for a post-purchase claim
- Request submitted through the correct store, chat, phone, or Guest Services channel
Why do price-match requests get rejected?
Most rejected requests fail because one eligibility detail is different, not because the retailer has no price-match program.
| Problem | Why the request fails | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace listing | The displayed platform is not the actual seller | Check “sold by” and “shipped by” fields |
| Different model | Color, finish, storage, quantity, accessory, or regional model differs | Compare the complete model number and specifications |
| Out of stock | The lower price cannot be purchased or shipped to the shopper | Verify live stock, pickup, delivery, and ZIP-code availability |
| Excluded promotion | The price comes from clearance, a coupon, a bundle, a rebate, financing, or a special event | Read the offer terms and the retailer’s exclusions |
| Location mismatch | The price belongs to another store, ZIP code, or app location | Select the correct store and delivery location |
| Insufficient proof | The retailer cannot verify the price, seller, stock, or terms | Use a live page or the proof format the policy accepts |
| Late request | The post-purchase window has expired | Check the receipt date and the retailer’s stated window |
| Service rather than merchandise | Installation, delivery, labor, or a protection plan is being compared | Separate the product price from excluded services |
| Loyalty or membership price | The offer is restricted to a selected customer group | Check whether the policy expressly permits that offer |
Walmart is the clearest example of manager discretion: Walmart’s official policy gives the store manager on duty final authority. Other retailers also reserve the right to verify or decline a claim when the product, price, seller, or availability cannot be confirmed.
When is buying from the cheaper retailer better than requesting a match?
Buying from the cheaper retailer can be better when the lower offer is valid there but excluded by the store where you planned to shop.
- The competitor’s delivered price is materially lower after shipping.
- The product is available only from a marketplace seller.
- The cheaper retailer has a more suitable return policy, pickup option, warranty, or fulfillment method.
- The lower offer is a flash sale, coupon, bundle, membership price, or limited-time promotion that will not qualify.
- The retailer offering the match excludes the installation, delivery, labor, or service package you actually need.
Price matching is valuable only when the matched purchase still provides the best overall combination of price, availability, returns, warranty, and fulfillment.
Can price-history and shopping tools help?
Price-history tools can help determine whether a discount is genuine, but no tool guarantees that a retailer will accept a price-match request.

Keepa and CamelCamelCamel can help track Amazon price history and alerts. Google Shopping can help discover competing listings. Coupon and comparison tools such as Honey and Capital One Shopping may find lower offers, but coupon prices, marketplace listings, stale prices, shipping differences, and loyalty offers often fail retailer price-match rules.
Use these tools to find and evaluate a possible deal, then verify the live retailer page, direct seller, exact model, stock, location, final delivered price, and policy exclusions before asking for the match.

- Choose Walmart when a lower Walmart.com price applies to an in-store purchase and you can request the match during checkout.
- Choose Target when the price difference is between Target.com, the applicable Target store, and an eligible Target Circle offer, and you can act within 14 days.
- Choose Home Depot or Lowe’s for exact home-improvement SKUs when local availability or shipping to your address can be verified. Lowe’s is especially relevant when shipping or delivery materially changes the comparison.
- Choose Staples for eligible office technology and supplies when you can meet its different in-store and Staples.com proof rules.
Before you buy, check the retailer’s official policy page. Policies are current terms rather than permanent guarantees, and the official page may change without notice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Amazon offer a conventional price-match guarantee?
Amazon should be treated as a retailer shoppers compare against, not as a retailer with a confirmed conventional customer-facing price-match guarantee. The available official-policy evidence in this review is insufficient to recommend Amazon as a price-match destination, so check Amazon’s current customer-help terms separately before relying on one.
Can I price-match an Amazon Marketplace listing?
Usually, no. A product displayed on Amazon.com may be sold by an independent Marketplace seller, and major retailers commonly exclude third-party marketplace prices. Check the listing’s “sold by” and “shipped by” fields before making a request.
How long do I have to request a price adjustment?
Target allows up to 14 days after purchase, Home Depot advertises up to 30 days, and Staples generally allows 14 days. Best Buy refers to its return and exchange period rather than one universal number of days, while Lowe’s emphasizes matching at purchase, so verify the transaction-specific policy.
Does Walmart price-match a lower price after I buy online?
No general Walmart.com post-purchase price matching should be expected. Walmart stores may match an eligible Walmart.com price during checkout for an in-store purchase, but Walmart.com does not generally adjust a previously purchased item after its price falls.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Staples remain the most useful options for competitor price matching. Walmart mainly matches Walmart.com prices in stores, and Target mainly matches its own channels and eligible Target Circle offers. Before requesting any match, check the seller, full model number, stock status, location, fulfillment cost, promotion type, proof requirements, and deadline.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
