The Hercules 3D Prophet 4000XT is a graphics card family built around the original PowerVR Kyro/STG4000 GPU generation. It is not the Kyro II-based 3D Prophet 4500. Hercules sold the 4000XT in several configurations, so the exact board—AGP or PCI, 32 MB or 64 MB, and with or without TV output—must be identified before its specifications or compatibility can be described.

What the 3D Prophet 4000XT is

Hercules positioned the 3D Prophet 4000XT as its mainstream Kyro I line. A contemporary Hardware Upgrade review by Paolo Corsini, dated 22 August 2001, tested a “Hercules 3D Prophet 4000XT 32 Mbytes” card and described it as an entry-level Kyro product and the predecessor to the Kyro II-based 3D Prophet 4500. The review’s comments about clock-related performance and competition with the GeForce 2 MX400 describe the market in 2001, not current performance or value.

The underlying GPU family is the STG4000, commonly referred to as the original Kyro. Hercules’ own support material separates its products into a Kyro I mainstream line and a Kyro II performance line; the 4000XT belongs to the former, while the 4500 belongs to the latter.

4000XT variants documented by Hercules

Hercules listed five 4000XT configurations. The names indicate the interface, memory capacity, and in some cases the presence of television output:

3D Prophet 4000XT 64 MB Kyro I/STG4000 AGP 64 MB Yes
3D Prophet 4000XT 64 MB PCI Kyro I/STG4000 PCI 64 MB Yes

This table reflects Hercules’ enumerated product range, not a claim that every card carrying a shortened “4000XT” label has the same connectors or memory. Historical listings also describe 32 MB SDRAM, VGA, and S-Video/TV-out on particular boards; those details should be confirmed from the individual card and photographs.

4000XT versus 3D Prophet 4500

Documented memory range 32 MB and 64 MB variants Not established here

The 4000XT is therefore the earlier Kyro product, not simply another name for a 4500. A listing, driver archive, or expansion-card inventory that says only “Kyro” is insufficient to identify the exact Hercules model.

Specifications: what can and cannot be generalized

Memory

The reviewed Hardware Upgrade sample had 32 MB of SDRAM. Hercules also documented 64 MB 4000XT boards. Memory capacity is consequently a variant-level specification, not a universal 4000XT figure.

Interface

Both AGP and PCI versions were documented. An AGP card cannot be assumed to work in a PCI slot, and a PCI version is not interchangeable with an AGP version simply because both use the 4000XT name.

Outputs

TV-output models were explicitly listed, including the 32 MB 4000XT TV and 64 MB versions. A particular board’s bracket and connector layout should be checked rather than inferred from a generic product photograph or the shortened model name.

Clock figures from an archival specimen

A Trinity College Dublin collection record for one boxed AGP x4 specimen reports a 125 MHz Kyro engine and a 115 MHz effective memory clock. Those numbers belong to that accessioned item; they are not established default clocks for every 4000XT variant.

Historical context

Hardware Upgrade’s 22 August 2001 review treated the 32 MB card as an entry-level product and as the predecessor to Kyro II. Its comparison with the GeForce 2 MX400 is useful for understanding the card’s original market position. It should not be read as a current benchmark, a modern gaming recommendation, or evidence of present-day resale value.

Identifying a card before buying or installing it

  1. Read the complete label. Look for “4000XT,” “4000XT PCI,” “4000XT TV,” “64 MB,” or “64 MB PCI,” rather than relying on “Kyro” alone.
  2. Confirm the edge connector. AGP and PCI boards have visibly different interfaces; ask the seller for a clear photograph if the listing does not specify one.
  3. Count or verify memory. Confirm whether the board is the 32 MB or 64 MB configuration from its label, board markings, or reliable documentation.
  4. Inspect the rear bracket. Check whether TV-out or S-Video connectors are actually present on the specific card.
  5. Check the physical condition and contents. Ask whether it is tested and working, and whether the original installation CD-ROM, cables, or manuals are included. A university collection record documents one boxed AGP x4 card with its installation CD-ROM, but that archival example does not establish what ordinary listings contain.

Modern compatibility: verify the system, do not assume it

The available documentation does not establish compatibility with a particular present-day motherboard, operating system, or currently supported driver package. Before purchase, verify the exact card’s interface against the target system and locate a driver suitable for the operating system you actually intend to use. BIOS behavior, slot voltage, physical clearance, and driver availability can vary by host system and by board revision.

What to look for in a listing

  • Exact model suffix and GPU identification
  • AGP or PCI interface
  • 32 MB or 64 MB memory
  • Presence or absence of TV-out/S-Video
  • Clear photographs of the connector edge and rear bracket
  • Test status, visible damage, corrosion, and fan or heatsink condition
  • Included CD-ROM, cables, and documentation, if any

Current prices, stock, working condition, and usable modern drivers are not established by the historical sources above; those facts must be checked in the specific listing and target computer.

The Bottom Line

The Hercules 3D Prophet 4000XT is a Kyro I/STG4000 family, with documented AGP and PCI boards, 32 MB and 64 MB memory options, and TV-output configurations. Identify the exact suffix and interface before treating any specification or compatibility claim as applicable.
