HEPA filtration is the relevant choice for airborne allergy particles. Activated carbon is designed to adsorb certain gases and odors; it does not replace a particle filter. If you have both concerns, choose a cleaner with an appropriately sized particle-filtering stage and substantial carbon media. Air cleaning can support, but not replace, allergen source control, cleaning, and ventilation.

How the two filter types differ

Concern HEPA / particle filtration Activated carbon / gas filtration
Main target Airborne particles, including pollen, dust, mold particles, and pet dander. Selected gases and odors, depending on the pollutant and sorbent.
Relevance to allergies Directly relevant when allergens are airborne. Not a substitute for particle filtration.
How to compare Portable cleaners: compare particle CADR and room suitability. HVAC filters: check MERV rating and system compatibility. Check which pollutants the product targets and how much carbon media it contains. EPA says there are no widely used performance rating systems for gas filtration.
Important limit Does not capture settled allergens until they become airborne; symptom benefits vary. Performance is pollutant-specific and may be temporary; carbon does not remove every gas.

What HEPA means

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says a HEPA filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and other airborne particles at 0.3 microns. That is a filter-efficiency figure for the stated particle condition, not a promise that a room’s particle levels or allergy symptoms will fall by 99.97%. EPA’s HEPA filter explanation defines the term and its limits.

What activated carbon does

Activated carbon adsorbs selected gases and odors. EPA advises choosing a gas-targeted filter such as activated carbon when gases are the concern, and notes that carbon can be effective when a large amount is used. A thin carbon layer should not be assumed to handle every odor or gas; check the product’s stated targets and the amount of carbon media. Because widely used gas-filtration performance ratings are unavailable, products are harder to compare on a single standardized scale. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home covers particle and gas filtration.

Why a filter cannot catch every allergen

Air cleaners filter particles as air passes through them. Pollen, dust, mold particles, or pet dander that has settled on bedding, floors, or furniture is not captured until it is stirred back into the air. Filtration therefore works best alongside cleaning and steps that reduce the allergen source, rather than as a replacement for them.

For mold, an air cleaner is not a fix for the moisture problem that allows mold to grow. Address the water or dampness source and clean up the mold; particle filtration alone will not resolve it.

How to choose a portable air cleaner

Size the cleaner to the space

  1. Measure the area. Multiply the room’s length by its width to estimate square footage.
  2. Compare the cleaner’s CADR and rated room size. The EPA’s 2018 second-edition guide estimates a minimum CADR of 65 cubic feet per minute (cfm) for 100 square feet and 390 cfm for 600 square feet, assuming an 8-foot ceiling. These are illustrative sizing estimates, not guarantees; a higher ceiling may call for greater capacity. For separate rooms or areas, consider a cleaner for each space.
  3. Check the small-particle rating when that is your concern. CADR is a particle-cleaning measure. EPA advises looking at the tobacco-smoke CADR to compare performance for small particles.
  4. Account for operating speed. CADR is typically measured at the highest fan speed. Running the cleaner more slowly filters less air, while longer run time generally increases the amount of air filtered.

CADR helps compare particle-cleaning delivery; it does not rate a carbon stage’s ability to remove gases. For a combination unit, assess particle capacity for the room separately from the type and amount of carbon media.

When HVAC filtration may be an option

For a home heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system, EPA recommends a filter rated at least MERV 13, or the highest rating the system can accommodate. Check that the filter fits and that the system can handle it; consult an HVAC professional if compatibility is uncertain. HVAC filtration only occurs while the system fan is running. EPA’s home air-cleaner guide explains the MERV recommendation and system caveats.

Can HEPA filtration improve allergy symptoms?

It may, but results are not assured. EPA reports that multiple studies of portable HEPA air cleaners found improvements in one or more allergy and/or asthma symptoms; improvements were not always major and did not appear in every symptom. A filter-efficiency rating describes the filter under specified conditions, not a guaranteed health outcome.

Use filtration as one part of indoor-air management

  • Reduce or remove pollutant sources. EPA identifies source reduction and ventilation with clean outdoor air as the most effective ways to improve indoor air. Ventilate when outdoor air is clean and it is practical to do so.
  • Clean surfaces and fabrics. This helps address allergens that have settled and are not yet airborne.
  • Replace dirty or overloaded filters. Follow the cleaner or HVAC system’s replacement guidance; a clogged filter will not work well.
  • Avoid ozone-generating air cleaners. EPA calls ozone a lung irritant and says no federal agency has approved ozone generators for use in occupied spaces.

EPA’s guide is identified as its second edition from August 2018. EPA does not certify or recommend particular air-cleaner brands or models, so use the criteria above to assess a product rather than treating a brand claim as an endorsement.
