For wildfire or tobacco-smoke fine particles, prioritize a purifier with a HEPA or other high-efficiency particle filter and enough tobacco-smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) for the room. Activated carbon serves a different purpose: it can adsorb some gases and odor compounds, but it does not replace particle filtration. If you want to address both particle pollution and smoke odor, choose a properly sized unit that combines effective particle filtration with a substantial carbon stage.
What HEPA and activated carbon do
Smoke is a mixture, not a single pollutant. It contains airborne particles, including fine particulate matter such as PM2.5, as well as gases and compounds that can contribute to odor. The two filter media work on different parts of that mixture.
HEPA and other high-efficiency particle filters
A HEPA or other high-efficiency mechanical filter captures particles as air passes through it. For smoke-particle reduction, the practical questions are whether the purifier has an effective particle-filter stage and how much air it can clean at a useful speed. A HEPA label alone does not tell you how quickly a particular unit can clean your whole room.

Activated carbon
Activated carbon is an adsorbent: some gases and odor compounds can adhere to its surface as air passes through it. How well it performs depends on factors including the amount of carbon, the time air contacts it, humidity, and the particular pollutant. The EPA cautions that carbon filtration is effective when a large amount of material is used. A thin carbon sheet should not be treated as comprehensive gas protection.
Carbon is not a particle filter. Adding carbon does not increase a purifier’s particle CADR, and a carbon-only unit is not a substitute for high-efficiency filtration when the concern is PM2.5.
A combined purifier
A purifier with both a high-efficiency particle stage and activated carbon can address particles and some gases or odors, provided the particle CADR is adequate and the carbon stage is substantial enough for the intended use. The EPA describes the combination this way: “A portable air cleaner with a high CADR and an activated carbon filter can filter both particles and gases.” The statement is not a promise that every combined unit removes every gas, or that a small carbon layer will control every odor.
Which is better for wildfire smoke?
For fine particles from wildfire smoke, HEPA or another high-efficiency particle filter is the priority. Choose by particle CADR and room fit, not by whether a product advertises carbon. If smoke smell is also a concern, carbon is a useful additional stage; it is not the main measure of particle performance.

For a smoky room, EPA recommends a tobacco-smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. For example, a 120-square-foot room calls for a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least 80. This is a sizing rule for wildfire smoke, not a guarantee that a room will reach a particular PM2.5 concentration. A higher ceiling means more air volume than the floor-area figure alone implies, so choose a larger-rated unit for rooms with high ceilings.
How to use the sizing rule
- Measure the room’s floor length and width in feet, then multiply them to get square footage.
- Multiply that area by two-thirds to find the minimum tobacco-smoke CADR indicated by the EPA rule. For instance, 180 square feet × 2/3 = 120.
- If the ceiling is higher than usual, select a unit with a higher CADR than the floor-area calculation indicates.
- Check the manufacturer’s stated room-size claim against the unit’s tobacco-smoke CADR. When both measures are available, use the CADR-based sizing rule rather than relying on an unexplained room-size label.
CADR is useful for comparing particle-cleaning performance, but it is not a gas-removal rating. The EPA notes that there are no widely used performance-rating systems for portable gas filters. Compare carbon quantity and filter design where manufacturers disclose them, but do not infer gas or odor performance from CADR.
How to choose a purifier for smoke
Evaluate the whole system, not just the filter name on the package. A practical comparison should include particle performance, carbon capacity, running conditions, replacement supplies, and ozone safety.
1. Check tobacco-smoke CADR and room fit
Use the tobacco-smoke CADR to assess particle-cleaning output against the room area. If the room has high ceilings, or if you expect to run the unit at a quieter, lower fan speed, consider more capacity than the minimum sizing rule. The advertised CADR is a particle metric; it does not measure odor removal.

2. Confirm a high-efficiency particle stage
Look for a HEPA or other high-efficiency mechanical particle filter. The purpose of this stage is to capture smoke particles, including PM2.5. If the product description emphasizes odor or carbon but does not establish an effective particle-filter stage and smoke CADR, it does not answer the fine-particle question.
3. Assess the carbon stage realistically
For odor and some gas compounds, find out whether the purifier uses a meaningful mass of activated carbon rather than a thin treated layer. More carbon generally provides more adsorbent material, but performance also depends on contact time, humidity, and the pollutant. There is no widely used portable gas-filter rating to turn a product’s odor claim into a directly comparable CADR number.
4. Check replacement filters and recurring cost
Before buying, confirm that replacement particle and carbon filters are available for the exact model. Check whether the particle and carbon stages are separate or combined, how the manufacturer says to replace them, and the listed replacement-filter price. A purifier that cannot be maintained with available filters may not remain useful through repeated smoke events. Replacement timing depends on use and loading; do not assume one universal interval.

5. Consider noise and the speed you will actually use
Higher fan speeds and longer run times filter more air. A unit that is quiet only on its lowest setting may deliver less cleaning than you need if its CADR at that setting is not stated. Compare noise at the speed you expect to use, and prioritize a setting that you can keep running during the smoke event. EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance advises continuous operation at the highest fan setting during a smoke event.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
6. Avoid ozone-producing cleaners
Do not choose an air cleaner that intentionally produces ozone. EPA advises avoiding ozone-producing devices and points readers to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) certified-device list for devices tested to emit little or no ozone. Check the certification for the particular model; do not assume that all devices described as air cleaners meet the same standard.
What a purifier can and cannot address
A well-sized particle purifier can reduce airborne particles as room air repeatedly passes through its filter. A carbon stage may also reduce some gases or odors, but its performance depends on the pollutant and the amount and use of carbon. No purifier removes every pollutant.
- Fine particles: Choose high-efficiency particle filtration and sufficient tobacco-smoke CADR.
- Smoke odor and some gases: Look for a substantial activated-carbon stage, while treating gas-removal claims cautiously because common portable gas-filter ratings are not available.
- Carbon monoxide: Do not treat an activated-carbon stage as protection against carbon monoxide. A purifier is not a substitute for a carbon-monoxide alarm or for addressing a combustion hazard.
- Pollution entering from outdoors: During severe smoke, keep doors and windows closed where practical and avoid creating indoor smoke. A room purifier cannot prevent every pollutant from entering.
For central heating or cooling, use HVAC filtration only when the filter is compatible with the system. A filter that the equipment cannot handle may interfere with operation; do not assume that a higher-efficiency replacement is suitable for every HVAC system.

Run and maintain the purifier effectively
- Place it in the room you need to clean. Choose a location where air can circulate through the unit, and follow the manufacturer’s clearance and placement instructions.
- Keep the room closed during severe smoke. Close doors and windows where practical to limit additional smoke entering while the cleaner runs.
- Run it continuously during the smoke event. EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance recommends continuous operation at the highest fan setting. If noise makes that impractical, use a speed you can sustain rather than switching the unit off for long periods.
- Replace loaded filters. Replace filters when dirty or overloaded, following the instructions for the particular purifier. Smoke can load filters; a clogged or overloaded filter should not be treated as if it were still performing like a clean one.
- Keep smoke sources out of the room. Avoid activities that create indoor smoke while relying on the purifier to clean the air.
Continuous operation at a high fan setting can mean more noise and more frequent filter replacement than intermittent, low-speed use. These are practical trade-offs, not reasons to ignore the recommended operating guidance during a smoke event.

Can a DIY box-fan filter help?
A box fan fitted with MERV-13 filters can be an alternative for particle filtration. In EPA laboratory research on simulated wildfire smoke, the agency reported the following clean air delivery rates for the tested configurations:
| Tested configuration | CADR reported by EPA |
|---|---|
| One 1-inch MERV-13 filter on a box fan | 111 ± 1 |
| One 1-inch filter plus a cardboard shroud | 156 ± 4 |
| One 4-inch filter plus a shroud | 248 ± 15 |
| Two 1-inch filters plus a shroud | 263 ± 22 |
| Four 1-inch MERV-13 filters in a Corsi-Rosenthal box plus a shroud | 401 ± 31 |
These figures are results from EPA’s 2022 laboratory work on specific simulated-smoke configurations, not guaranteed performance for every fan, filter, or home-built assembly. EPA notes that fan models and configurations vary. A DIY build can be effective, but its output is less straightforward to size and maintain than a commercial unit with a published CADR. The reported figures concern particle cleaning; they do not establish gas or odor removal.
When to consider a DIY build
- You need particle filtration and can assemble and maintain the fan-and-filter setup safely.
- You can choose a MERV-13 filter and configuration suited to the fan, and can tolerate the setup’s noise and footprint.
- You understand that the laboratory CADRs are not guarantees for your particular build.
If you need odor or gas reduction as well as particle filtration, the cited DIY configurations do not establish a carbon-removal capability. A separate carbon stage would need to be evaluated on its own merits.

| Your main concern | What to prioritize |
|---|---|
| Wildfire PM2.5 | HEPA or other high-efficiency particle filtration and a tobacco-smoke CADR sized to the room. |
| Smoke odor as well as particles | A properly sized particle purifier with a substantial activated-carbon stage. |
| Odor but no published CADR | Do not assume the odor claim establishes fine-particle performance; look for a particle-filter stage and smoke CADR. |
| Lower-cost DIY particle cleaning | A suitable MERV-13 box-fan configuration, recognizing that the EPA figures are laboratory results and not guaranteed for an individual build. |
For most people facing smoke particles, the decision order is straightforward: first establish enough particle-cleaning capacity for the room, then add carbon if odor or some gas compounds are also a concern. A carbon label cannot make up for an undersized particle filter, and a high particle CADR cannot establish how well a unit controls gases.
