A phone-like ring in a room may come from a real device—or it may be a sound only you perceive. Check nearby electronics and recent phone activity first. If no source turns up and the sound persists or bothers you, talk with a health professional; ringing alongside sudden hearing loss needs prompt medical attention.
First, check whether a device is making the sound
The description “haunted” captures how unsettling an unexplained ring can feel, but it does not identify its cause. The sound could be coming from your phone or another device, or it could be perceived without an external source. The experience alone cannot distinguish between those possibilities.
- Inspect your phone. Check whether it is ringing, vibrating, or playing an alert, and look at recent calls and notifications. If needed, silence it briefly and notice whether the sound stops.
- Check nearby electronics. Listen for alerts from a second phone, tablet, computer, watch, speaker, or other device in the room.
- Ask someone else to listen. If another person hears the sound too, look for an external source. If they do not, that does not by itself establish a cause; it is useful information to share with a clinician if the experience continues.
If no one else hears it, tinnitus is one possible description
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) defines tinnitus as “the perception of sound that does not have an external source, so other people cannot hear it.” Tinnitus can sound like ringing, buzzing, roaring, whistling, humming, clicking, hissing, or squealing, and may be heard in one ear, both ears, or in the head. Decide what to do based on the symptoms

What a clinician can assess
An appointment can help distinguish a sound-perception concern from an ear or hearing issue that needs attention. A clinician may examine the ears for wax or fluid, ask about health conditions and medicines, and evaluate hearing. Ringing can be one sign of noise-induced hearing loss, but the sound alone does not establish noise exposure or hearing damage. Stress or anxiety may make tinnitus feel worse, but that does not show that stress caused it. MedlinePlus states: “It is not known if stress causes tinnitus, but feeling stressed or anxious can worsen it.” MedlinePlus: Tinnitus

Management depends on what is found
There is no single treatment that fits every cause. For people with tinnitus, management may include sound therapy or behavioral support; hearing aids are among the options when tinnitus occurs with hearing loss. NIDCD says there is no cure for tinnitus and that supplements marketed as cures have not been proven effective.
