To improve HDR live video on YouTube, start with an HDR-capable source, carry its real PQ or HLG signal through a compatible 10-bit HEVC encoder, then match YouTube’s bitrate guidance to your resolution and frame rate. HDR color handling determines how the picture looks; upload capacity and encoder health determine whether it arrives smoothly. The settings below are YouTube-specific, not universal requirements for every streaming platform.
How to stream genuine HDR on YouTube Live
HDR has to originate in the video source and remain intact through capture, encoding, and delivery. Turning on an HDR option for SDR footage does not make the source genuine HDR. YouTube says creators need compatible HDR content and a compatible encoder. For camera video, check the camera manual for PQ or HLG recording or output; for games, verify that HDR is enabled in the game and supported by the capture path.
- Confirm the source. Check that the camera outputs or records HDR using PQ or HLG, or that the game and capture path actually provide HDR.
- Use a compatible encoding path. YouTube Live HDR uses HEVC/H.265 and 10-bit video. YouTube’s OBS instructions specify OBS 30.1 or later for the described RTMP workflow, a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG; those instructions recommend HLG.
- Preserve the source’s color signaling. Match the transfer function and range to the actual source. YouTube’s HLS HDR specification calls for 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG, Rec. 2020 primaries, and a Rec. 2020 non-constant-luminance matrix.
- Choose delivery settings and verify the stream. Match codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate; test the sustained upload; then check YouTube’s stream health and confirm playback on an HDR-capable device.
In the OBS workflow described by YouTube, the Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors. Do not use that preview alone to judge whether the signal is reaching viewers as HDR.
Choose a YouTube Live bitrate that your connection can sustain
YouTube’s 2026 guidance (accessed 2026-10-03; the help page does not expose a publication date) provides the following recommended bitrate figures for AV1 and H.265, alongside minimums. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not universal thresholds for picture quality.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These recommendations vary substantially by codec: do not apply the H.264 figure to an H.265 stream or vice versa. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate before going live. If your connection cannot sustain the chosen upload, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, or improve the network; a higher encoder setting cannot compensate for inadequate upload capacity. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe frequency, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes.
YouTube recommends RTMPS generally and recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR. If the encoder cannot send HDR over that workflow, YouTube lists HLS as an option. For YouTube HLS, segments must be 1–4 seconds, media must be muxed in M2TS, video must use H.264 or HEVC, and the GOP must be closed. HLS HDR specifically requires HEVC, 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG, Rec. 2020 primaries, and a Rec. 2020 non-constant-luminance matrix.

YouTube says 2160p streams are optimized for quality at normal latency; low-latency optimization is unavailable at that resolution. If low latency is essential, weigh that constraint when choosing resolution and delivery settings.
Why an HDR live stream can look washed out
A washed-out or otherwise incorrect picture often points to a mismatch somewhere in the color pipeline rather than to a low bitrate. Confirm that the source is genuinely HDR, then compare the source’s transfer function and range with the encoder’s output signaling. For YouTube HDR, check that the stream carries PQ or HLG, 10-bit video, and the specified Rec. 2020 color metadata. Applying HDR signaling to SDR footage—or signaling a different transfer function from the one actually used—can produce an image that does not represent the source correctly.

Separate color problems from delivery problems. Incorrect color handling affects the image; insufficient upload capacity, encoder overload, or ingestion problems can cause stuttering, buffering, or dropped frames. YouTube’s health diagnostics can report issues such as low bitrate and frame-rate mismatch. Correct the problem the health status identifies instead of assuming HDR itself is the cause.
How to tell whether YouTube is actually delivering HDR
- Open the stream on a known HDR-capable playback device and connection.
- Open the player’s quality menu and look for the HDR label beside the quality options.
- Check playback separately on an HDR-capable device and an unsupported device. YouTube says supported devices display HDR automatically; viewers on unsupported devices receive SDR.
A standard-dynamic-range fallback on an unsupported display does not by itself prove that the stream was sent as SDR. The Live Control Room preview also does not show HDR colors in YouTube’s documented OBS workflow, so use compatible viewer playback and the player’s HDR label to verify.

Troubleshoot soft, stuttering, or unstable HDR streams
| Symptom | Check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Washed-out or incorrect color | Source HDR support; PQ/HLG choice; transfer function, range, primaries, and matrix | Confirm the source’s actual PQ or HLG mode, then make encoder signaling match it. For YouTube HDR, verify 10-bit HEVC and the required color metadata. |
| Buffering or dropped frames | Sustained upload capacity and YouTube stream-health status | Run an upload speed test. Reduce the stream target or improve the connection if it cannot sustain the selected bitrate; address the specific ingestion warning shown by YouTube. |
| Soft or blocky picture | Bitrate, codec, resolution, and frame-rate pairing | Compare the chosen bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for that codec and format. If the connection cannot sustain it, lower the target rather than letting the upload fluctuate. |
| Frame-rate or GOP warning | Encoder frame rate and keyframe interval | Resolve the frame-rate mismatch reported by YouTube and use the recommended 2-second keyframe frequency, staying at or below 4 seconds. |
| No HDR label during playback | Source, HEVC 10-bit encoding, color signaling, and playback device | Verify the complete HDR path, then test on a known HDR-capable device and inspect the quality menu. An SDR fallback on an unsupported device is expected. |
Choose a camera and setup by compatibility, not just an HDR label
For camera-based live HDR, the decisive check is documented PQ or HLG support in the camera’s recording or output path. The phrase “HDR” on a product listing alone does not establish compatibility with YouTube’s requirements. Compare candidate setups on these points:
- Whether the source outputs or records PQ or HLG.
- Whether the encoder supports HEVC Main 10 and the required color format and signaling.
- The resolution and frame rate you want, and the matching YouTube bitrate for your codec.
- Whether your encoder supports the needed RTMP(S) HDR workflow or HLS requirements.
- Your sustainable upload capacity, latency needs, and viewers’ access to HDR-capable playback devices.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs an uploaded video to play continuously, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not a camera-based live HDR encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube only.
