HDMI 2.2 is no longer merely expected to appear at CES: the HDMI Forum announced the specification at CES on January 6, 2025, and released it on June 25, 2025. Its headline change is a maximum bandwidth of 96Gbps, but that does not mean every HDMI 2.2 device supports that speed or every high-resolution mode runs uncompressed. For buyers, the key is to check the bandwidth tier and supported modes of both devices, plus the cable certification.
What is HDMI 2.2?
HDMI 2.2 is a version of the HDMI specification from the HDMI Forum. Announced in Las Vegas on January 6, 2025, and formally released on June 25, 2025, it adds next-generation Fixed Rate Link (FRL) signaling with bandwidth of up to 96Gbps. That is double the 48Gbps maximum associated with HDMI 2.1 in current coverage. The Forum describes potential uses ranging from immersive and virtual applications to commercial digital signage, medical imaging, and machine vision. How much bandwidth and what resolutions does HDMI 2.2 support?
The maximum is 96Gbps, but a resolution number by itself does not tell you whether a signal is uncompressed, full chroma, or using a particular color depth. HDMI Forum lists support up to 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz, as well as full-chroma examples including 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz at 4:4:4 chroma and 10-bit or 12-bit color. Its January announcement also lists modes using compression or chroma subsampling, including 4K at 480Hz, 5K at 240Hz, 8K at 240Hz, 10K at 120Hz, and 12K at 120Hz. These are different operating conditions, not a guarantee that each resolution and refresh rate is available uncompressed at every color setting. What is LIP, and who might benefit?
Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) is designed to improve audio/video synchronization when signals pass through multiple connected devices, such as a source, AV receiver, and television, or a soundbar in the signal path. Each connection can complicate timing, and the Forum says LIP is intended to address that kind of setup. It is a synchronization feature, not a guarantee that every lip-sync problem will disappear in every combination of equipment. The HDMI Forum described LIP’s purpose in its announcement.

What does Ultra96 mean for HDMI cables?
Ultra96 is a feature name manufacturers are encouraged to use for products with HDMI 2.2 maximum bandwidth tiers of 64Gbps, 80Gbps, or 96Gbps. The name therefore does not mean every product bearing it operates at 96Gbps. A product displaying Ultra96 requires an Ultra96 HDMI cable to support its maximum bandwidth. HDMI Forum says each cable model and length must pass its certification process and display the certification label. The HDMI Forum’s cable information explains the certification requirements.
When evaluating an Ultra96 HDMI cable, check the certification label and the cable length rather than relying on a listing title alone. The current Ultra High Speed HDMI cable category applies to configurations up to 48Gbps. An Ultra96 cable matters when both the source and display can use HDMI 2.2 bandwidth; it cannot raise the capabilities of equipment that supports less.

Do you need a new HDMI cable or new equipment?
Not necessarily. HDMI 2.2 is backward compatible with earlier HDMI specification versions, and existing systems can continue to use cables suited to their equipment’s supported bandwidth. A new cable alone will not give an older source or display HDMI 2.2 features. If you are planning a future upgrade, match the cable to the maximum bandwidth you intend to use and confirm that both ends of the connection support the desired mode. The HDMI Forum says HDMI 2.2 is backward compatible.
- For an existing setup capped at 48Gbps, an Ultra High Speed cable remains the relevant category.
- For a planned HDMI 2.2 setup, verify the source and display’s advertised maximum bandwidth, target resolution and refresh rate, chroma and color-depth support, and the cable’s certification label and length.
- Do not infer 96Gbps capability from an HDMI 2.2 label alone: the standard’s Ultra96 tiers include 64Gbps, 80Gbps, and 96Gbps products.
When will HDMI 2.2 products be available?
The specification itself has been released, but product availability is a separate matter. Recent trade reporting quotes HDMI Licensing Administrator CEO and president Rob Tobias forecasting upgraded cables in the current or next quarter and products reaching up to 96Gbps the following year; another report expects first devices in 2027. These are forecasts, not confirmed retail launch dates, and the reports do not establish specific device types or exact release dates. Check manufacturer specifications and availability rather than treating the forecast as a launch schedule. FlatpanelsHD’s report includes Tobias’s forecast. What to check when comparing HDMI 2.2 products
The version name alone is not enough to determine what a product can do. Compare the details that affect your intended setup:

- Maximum bandwidth: Look for the stated tier—64Gbps, 80Gbps, or 96Gbps—rather than assuming all HDMI 2.2 products reach the ceiling.
- Supported signal modes: Check resolution, refresh rate, chroma format, and color depth together. A stated resolution ceiling does not establish that it runs uncompressed at every setting.
- Whole-system compatibility: Confirm the source and display both support the mode you want; include any receiver or soundbar in the connection path.
- Cable certification: For maximum bandwidth beyond 48Gbps, look for the Ultra96 certification label and verify the specific cable length.
