It raised the interface’s maximum link capacity to up to 48 Gbps and added support for video modes including 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz, along with Dynamic HDR, eARC and gaming features such as VRR and ALLM. Those are capabilities of the specification—not a promise that every product labeled “HDMI 2.1” implements them all.
What the 2017 HDMI 2.1 announcement actually covered
The HDMI Forum first announced the upcoming HDMI 2.1 specification on January 4, 2017 (HDMI Forum announcement). The completed specification became available to HDMI 2.0 adopters on November 28, 2017 (specification release).
| Milestone | What happened |
|---|---|
| January 4, 2017 | HDMI Forum announced the upcoming HDMI 2.1 specification. |
| November 28, 2017 | The specification was released to HDMI 2.0 adopters. |
| 2020 | Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable certification labels became available and certified cables entered the market (HDMI Licensing Administrator notice). |
Current HDMI pages describe HDMI 2.1b as supporting 8K60, 4K120, Dynamic HDR and up to 48 Gbps (HDMI 2.1 specification page). Later HDMI revisions exist, but the original 48-Gbps cable class remains relevant to systems designed for up to 48 Gbps.
What HDMI 2.1 introduced
8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz
HDMI Forum materials identify 8K60Hz and 4K120Hz as key video modes (HDMI Forum feature summary). “60 FPS” is a consumer-friendly description of 60 frames per second; the interface specification normally expresses the timing as 60 Hz.

8K describes resolution, not a guarantee that a console or graphics card can render a game at native 7680×4320 resolution and 60 frames per second. HDMI defines the signal transport. The source still needs the processing power and content to generate that signal. For most buyers, 4K at 120 Hz became the more immediate use case, particularly for gaming.
Up to 48 Gbps of link bandwidth
“48 Gbps” describes the maximum transport capacity associated with the Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable class; it is not the internet bitrate of a streamed movie or the encoded bitrate of a file. The bandwidth needed by a particular signal depends on resolution, refresh rate, HDR, color format, color depth, compression and the limits of every device in the path.
HDMI Forum materials describe the cable as supporting uncompressed HDMI 2.1 features, including 8K video with HDR (Ultra High Speed cable specification). A demanding uncompressed mode may require much of that capacity, but an 8K60 signal does not automatically consume the full 48 Gbps in every configuration.

Dynamic HDR
Dynamic HDR allows HDR metadata to vary by scene or frame rather than applying one static instruction to an entire program. The display and source must both support the relevant HDR format; the HDMI 2.1 label alone does not identify which formats are implemented.

What an Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable is
The official designation is Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable. It is the cable class associated with up to 48 Gbps and is designed for features including uncompressed 8K60 and 4K120. It is backward-compatible with earlier HDMI equipment, so it can connect to an older television or receiver; it cannot add HDMI 2.1 hardware, resolution, processing or firmware features to that equipment.
Certification applies to a particular cable model and length, not to a brand in general. HDMI Licensing Administrator says every cable length must pass testing at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Center (certification requirements). The HDMI specification does not set one universal maximum length for every construction, so long installations require more careful selection.

- Look for the official Ultra High Speed HDMI Certification Label on the packaging or unit of sale.
- Check that the cable jacket uses the official cable name.
- Scan the label’s QR code or use the verification result supplied with the label.
- Match the exact brand, model and length shown in the result to the cable you are buying.
Do not rely solely on “HDMI 2.1 cable,” “8K cable,” “48G cable,” “gaming HDMI cable” or “certified-quality cable.” HDMI Licensing Administrator warns that informal reseller terms and counterfeit labels exist.

“HDMI 2.1” does not guarantee a complete feature set
Manufacturers can implement a subset of the specification. Before buying a television, monitor, graphics card, console, receiver, switch or soundbar, check the product’s own port table for:
- The number of HDMI 2.1 ports and the exact port numbers.
- Maximum resolution and refresh rate per port.
- 4K/120, VRR and ALLM support.
- eARC availability and which port provides it.
- Supported HDR formats.
- Whether the implementation provides 40 Gbps, 48 Gbps or another bandwidth value.
- Firmware requirements and whether a later update is needed.
- Whether all inputs support the advertised mode or only selected inputs.
The HDMI Forum feature list explains what the specification can support; it does not establish that every certified product includes every feature (HDMI 2.1 feature information).

Every part of the signal chain matters
A working HDMI 2.1 mode requires compatibility across the complete path:
- Source device, such as a console, PC graphics card, player or camera.
- Source-side HDMI port and firmware.
- Appropriate HDMI cable.
- AV receiver, soundbar, switch, capture device or adapter, if used.
- Display-side HDMI port and its selected operating mode.
- Display panel and processing hardware.
An HDMI 2.0 receiver or switch in the middle can block 4K/120 or another HDMI 2.1 mode even when the source, cable and television are compatible. A certified cable cannot bypass that bottleneck.
When HDMI 2.1 is useful—and when it is not
| Situation | Why HDMI 2.1 may matter |
|---|---|
| 4K gaming at 120 Hz | High refresh rate, often combined with VRR and ALLM. |
| Advanced home theater | eARC, Dynamic HDR and compatible high-bandwidth video modes. |
| 1080p or ordinary 4K/60 | Usually little practical benefit if no HDMI 2.1 feature is being used. |
| Older receiver or switch | It may prevent the desired mode unless replaced or bypassed. |
| Long cable run | Construction and installation length become critical; active or optical designs may be appropriate. |
For short runs, a certified passive cable is generally the simplest choice. For long runs, verify directionality, power requirements, return terms and compatibility before choosing an active or optical product. Paying extra for audiophile branding does not substitute for verified certification and a suitable length.
Troubleshooting 4K/120, 8K or HDR failures
If a package says “8K” but 4K/120 does not work, test the chain rather than blaming the cable immediately:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Connect the source directly to the display, bypassing the receiver, soundbar or switch.
- Use a cable with a verifiable Ultra High Speed certification label.
- Confirm that the source and display are connected to the specific high-bandwidth ports.
- Enable the display’s enhanced, high-bandwidth or HDMI 2.1 mode if such a setting exists.
- Update source, display and receiver firmware.
- Reconnect the receiver, soundbar or switch and test it as the possible bottleneck.
- If a combined HDR/VRR mode fails, test resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR separately.
Other possible causes include a source configured for HDMI 2.0 compatibility, a cable length unsuitable for its construction, a port limited to a lower mode, or a signal configuration whose color depth and HDR requirements exceed the installed link.
Quick Recap
What HDMI 2.1 cannot promise
- An 8K60-capable interface does not prove native 8K game rendering.
- A 48-Gbps cable does not upgrade an older television to 8K or HDMI 2.1.
- A product name containing “HDMI 2.1” does not prove 48 Gbps, 4K/120, VRR, ALLM or eARC.
- An HDMI 2.1 cable does not guarantee compatibility with every later HDMI revision or feature.
