For most single-PC livestreams, start with a supported hardware encoder already in your computer and test it with your real content. It usually moves encoding work off the CPU, which can help preserve performance. Choose software encoding such as OBS’s x264 when your CPU has room and its quality-versus-performance trade-off fits your setup. Neither option is universally better: results depend on the encoder generation, settings, bitrate, content, and destination.

What is the difference between hardware and software encoding?

Hardware encoding

A specialized video-encoding unit performs the encode. It is commonly built into a GPU or graphics platform. OBS supports hardware encoder families including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), and Apple VideoToolbox. You still choose and configure the encoder in software such as OBS; “hardware” describes where the encoding work runs.

Software encoding

The computer’s general-purpose processor performs the encode. OBS’s software option includes x264. This uses CPU capacity that may also be needed by a game, graphics work, or other applications.

A dedicated encoder is a different category

A dedicated encoder appliance is a separate, purpose-built broadcast device. It is not the same thing as selecting a GPU’s built-in hardware encoder, and it is not a prerequisite for an ordinary single-PC stream.

How the two approaches compare

Decision point Hardware encoding Software encoding
Where the encode runs A specialized video-encoding unit, commonly within the graphics platform The CPU, using an encoder such as x264 in OBS
System-performance trade-off OBS says hardware encoding takes work off the CPU and can have minimal impact on system performance. A game can still compete for GPU resources, so test your actual setup. Consumes CPU capacity that could otherwise serve the game and other applications. A capable CPU and suitable settings can make this a valid choice.
Image quality at a fixed bitrate Newer hardware encoders can deliver very good quality. OBS cautions that earlier-generation hardware encoders may look worse than x264 at the same bitrate using x264’s default veryfast preset. Depends on the x264 preset, available CPU time, bitrate, content, and other settings. There is no universal quality advantage.
Compatibility Depends on the encoder being supported by your GPU or graphics platform, operating system, drivers, OBS version, codec, and destination. Depends on sufficient CPU capacity and a supported software-encoder configuration.
Best next step Check which encoder your system exposes, then test it with representative content. Check CPU headroom, then test at your intended resolution, frame rate, and content type.

This comparison reflects OBS Project’s guidance, not a controlled head-to-head test of current hardware. OBS’s hardware-encoding documentation was published on 2022-01-11; treat its generation and compatibility notes as a starting point and verify current support for your specific setup. OBS Project: Hardware Encoding

Which encoder should you choose?

Choose hardware encoding first if performance headroom matters

If your system offers an OBS-supported hardware encoder, try it before buying new equipment. Offloading encoding from the CPU can leave more CPU capacity available to a game and other software. But GPU workloads can compete with encoding, so a hardware option is not automatically the smoothest choice on every system.

Try x264 if your CPU has spare capacity

Software encoding may suit a machine with a capable CPU and enough headroom for both encoding and the rest of the workload. Compare its output and stability with your hardware option at the bitrate your destination accepts. Do not assume x264 will always look better: the outcome depends on the preset and available processing capacity as well as the hardware encoder being compared.

Make the decision with a representative test

  • Use the actual game, camera footage, desktop capture, or other content you plan to stream. Fast motion and detailed scenes can make differences easier to notice.
  • Test the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and encoder settings rather than comparing options with different constraints.
  • Check both stream health and local performance. A clean-looking preview alone does not establish that your upload connection or stream is stable.
  • Repeat the test if you change the encoder, settings, drivers, or workload.

Check encoder compatibility before changing hardware

OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC and AMD AMF on Windows and Linux, and Intel QSV on Windows and Linux when used with supported Intel processors that have graphics. Apple VideoToolbox is supported on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. OBS says VideoToolbox streaming on Intel Macs is not supported because it lacks the constant-bitrate support most streaming services require; for streaming on that configuration, OBS advises using x264. Confirm support for your particular device, drivers, operating system, and OBS release before relying on an encoder or buying a graphics card. See OBS’s current hardware-encoding guide

For YouTube Live, match settings to YouTube’s requirements

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds, and provides bitrate ranges that vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the resolution and frame-rate row that matches your planned output in YouTube’s table rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. Choose a stream quality your upload connection can reliably sustain, test before going live, and monitor stream health. These are YouTube-specific recommendations, not universal rules for every destination. YouTube Live encoder settings

HDR is a separate YouTube workflow

YouTube’s HDR guidance requires HEVC for HDR live streaming. OBS’s setup instructions call for a compatible hardware HEVC encoder and Main 10 profile, as well as HDR/P010 and a supported HDR color space. YouTube also lists compatible dedicated encoder products for particular HLS HDR workflows, including Cobalt and Telestream Lightspeed Live Stream. Those specialized options do not make HDR necessary for ordinary streaming, and they are not a general recommendation for a typical single-PC gaming stream. YouTube HDR live-streaming guidance

When is a new GPU or encoder appliance necessary?

Often, it is not. Check the hardware encoder already available on your system and verify that it supports the codec and settings you need. Consider a graphics-card upgrade only if your current setup lacks a compatible encoder or cannot meet your tested requirements; confirm the specific card’s codec support, operating-system and OBS compatibility, and destination acceptance before buying.

A dedicated appliance is relevant to particular professional workflows, including some YouTube HDR/HLS configurations. YouTube’s named compatible products are examples for those workflows, not evidence that an appliance is required for standard live streaming.

Common problems and what to check

  • The hardware encoder does not appear in OBS: Check whether your specific graphics platform and operating system support the encoder, update or verify the relevant driver, and confirm your OBS version and codec configuration. Compatibility varies by device and software version.
  • The game or stream stutters with hardware encoding: The GPU may be under load from the game or other graphics work. Test a representative scene and workload; compare with another supported encoder or adjust the graphics workload and stream settings.
  • The CPU is overloaded with x264: Encoding is competing for CPU time with the game or other applications. Check CPU headroom during a representative test and try a supported hardware encoder if available, or reduce the workload or output demands.
  • The stream drops frames or appears unstable: Check YouTube’s stream health and whether your upload connection can sustain the chosen quality. Follow YouTube’s codec, CBR, keyframe, and bitrate guidance for the selected output, then test again before relying on the configuration live.
  • The image looks worse than expected: Compare at the same destination-approved bitrate and output settings. Encoder generation, x264 preset, content motion, and available system resources all affect the result; do not compare unlike configurations.
  • You cannot stream HDR through Intel Mac VideoToolbox: OBS says Intel Mac VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported because it lacks the constant-bitrate support most streaming services require. OBS advises x264 for streaming on that configuration; YouTube HDR separately requires HEVC.
