A run can appear before Storybook has finished building or uploading its assets. If requests were submitted, inspect the report’s searchable snap-request logs; they can point to render errors, missing assets, slow fonts, or work that finished after capture. Then check credentials, configuration, and worker network access.
1. Find out how far the CI run got
A visible Happo check or report landing page does not prove that screenshot requests reached the workers. Happo’s CI flow can announce a run while the job is still building Storybook, uploading assets, or doing other setup. Review the CI output from the start of the job through the Happo invocation and determine whether the screenshot requests were submitted.
- No report or run: Check whether the intended CI step ran, and look for setup or command failures.
- A run or report exists, but no screenshots: Check whether the build and asset upload completed and whether snap requests were sent afterward.
- Some screenshots are present: Focus on the affected target, component, or request rather than assuming the entire CI integration failed.

2. Verify the project configuration and CI secrets
When requests appear not to be submitted, check the integration’s configuration before investigating rendering. Happo’s repository example configures apiKey and apiSecret from HAPPO_API_KEY and HAPPO_API_SECRET. It documents the npx happo CLI and says it discovers configuration files in the project root.

- Confirm both expected secrets are available to the CI job and are named as the configuration expects. Never print secret values in CI logs.
- Check the job’s working directory. A CLI run from the wrong directory may not find the intended root configuration.
- Confirm the job invokes the expected Happo package and integration, and that the build or upload step runs before the screenshot requests.
- Compare the configuration and package versions used locally with those used in CI if behavior differs.
The exact configuration varies by repository and integration; use Happo’s repository configuration example as a reference, not as a substitute for checking your project.
3. Use the report’s snap-request logs
For requests that were submitted, the report’s logs are the most direct place to investigate a failed or incomplete snapshot. Happo’s report logs page combines logs from all snap requests in a searchable timeline. Search for the component name, review warnings and errors, and expand the relevant request’s full log. The logs view is linked from comparison, report, and async-report views.

Look for more than explicit exceptions. A page can render without an obvious fatal error while an image returns 404, a font takes too long to load, or asynchronous work finishes only after the screenshot has already been taken. Happo’s report-log guide explains the searchable view and the kinds of issues it can expose.
4. Check assets and worker network restrictions
If the logs indicate missing images, fallback fonts, blocked requests, or a blank page, inspect the target’s allowed-host configuration and the worker’s network access. The setting is version-sensitive: Happo announced a target-level allowedHostnames option on September 23, 2026, and said it was off by default at that time. Happo also said it planned to block external requests by default in a future major version. Check your installed package version and target configuration before changing anything.

- Read the worker log near its end for the allowed and blocked hostnames.
- If the target relies on external fonts, images, APIs, or other resources, verify their hostnames are permitted by the target’s configuration.
- For Happo’s pages integration, allow the hostnames of the page URLs being tested. Happo says that otherwise the worker can capture an empty page.
- Distinguish a page that loaded but missed an asset from a page host that the worker could not reach; the fixes are not necessarily the same.
Happo details the option and its version-sensitive behavior in its worker request restrictions announcement. Do not broaden allowed hosts without considering which requests the target actually needs.
5. Retry an isolated screenshot, not a recurring failure
For one apparently spurious snapshot, Happo’s Single Screenshot Retry feature can regenerate that snapshot from its source page without rerunning the whole suite. Check the feature’s prerequisites against the versions in your project: Happo’s announcement, updated September 17, 2025, lists minimum versions for happo.io, happo-plugin-storybook, and happo-static.

A successful retry is useful for recovering or isolating one bad result, but it does not establish that a recurring asset, timing, or network problem is fixed. If the same component fails again, use its worker log to address the underlying cause. See Happo’s Single Screenshot Retry announcement.

If the report and worker logs do not make the failure clear, Happo lists support@happo.io for issues with a report, integration, or build. To make the problem easier to investigate, include the report link, affected component or snap request, CI output around setup and submission, and relevant worker-log lines. Remove secrets and sensitive data before sharing logs.
