The Nokia DT-903 is a Nokia-branded, Microsoft Mobile-era charging plate whose primary job is straightforward: place a Qi-compatible phone on it to charge. Its illuminated alerts are a separate, legacy Lumia feature—not a general smart-notification system for modern iPhones or Android phones.

What the Nokia DT-903 is

Microsoft Mobile’s 2014 user guide identifies the DT-903 as a Qi-compliant wireless charging plate. The hardware connects by USB to a compatible charger plugged into a wall outlet or another suitable USB power source. With the plate face up and clear, you place a Qi-compatible phone or other device on the charging area.

The accessory belongs to a specific period in Nokia and Microsoft’s hardware history. Microsoft Devices announced it on September 4, 2014, as the second-generation Nokia Wireless Charging Plate, planned in white, bright orange and bright green for $59 USD or €59. Those were announced launch details, not a current price, resale value or guarantee of stock.

Microsoft’s announcement used the promotional line, “The second generation Nokia Wireless Charger not only looks amazing, it knows when your Lumia is running out of juice.” The phrase describes the intended Lumia alert feature; it is not an independent performance test.

How charging behaves

  1. Connect the plate’s USB cable to a compatible charger.
  2. Plug that charger into a wall outlet or suitable USB power source.
  3. Set the plate on a stable surface with its charging face upward.
  4. Place a Qi-compatible phone or other device on the charging area, removing anything that prevents proper contact.
  5. Watch the indicator to confirm the charging state.

The guide says the indicator lights during charging and fades when the device is full. It also says warmth during charging is normal. A rapidly flashing indicator signals a charging problem, including insufficient power from the connected source. The documentation does not establish a charging wattage, maximum speed or comparison with newer chargers, so the DT-903 should not be represented as a fast-charge product.

Qi charging and Lumia alerts are different capabilities

Qi charging

Any device that supports the Qi standard can use the plate for basic wireless charging, subject to the device maker’s compatibility guidance. The DT-903’s Qi function does not require a Lumia phone.

NFC pairing

The user guide says NFC works with NFC-supporting Nokia Lumia devices. NFC is part of the legacy pairing and feature experience, not a requirement for ordinary Qi charging.

Smart alerts

The documented low-battery, missed-call and notification features require all of the following according to the historical guide:

  • Lumia Denim, also called Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1
  • Device Hub version 3.6 or later
  • Bluetooth 4.0 or higher

These are requirements stated for the period’s Lumia software. They are not assurance that Device Hub remains available, installable or functional on current phones. Do not assume the alert system works with present-day iOS or Android devices.

Bluetooth connection limits

The guide specifies Bluetooth 4.0 and a paired-device range of up to 10 metres (33 feet). Walls and other electronic devices can reduce that range. The specification describes the intended connection, not a guaranteed distance in every room.

What each light pattern means

Indicator behavior Meaning in the Microsoft Mobile guide
Continuous light The connected device is charging.
Light off The connected phone or device is fully charged.
Rapid flashing A charging error or insufficient power from the connected source.
Repeated double flashes A notification.
Slow flashing The connected phone’s battery is low.

The multifunction key can be pressed once to adjust indicator brightness or dismiss an alert. Holding it for more than eight seconds clears paired devices.

What phones work with it?

  • Qi-compatible phones and devices: suitable for the basic charging function.
  • NFC-supporting Nokia Lumia models: eligible for the documented NFC pairing behavior.
  • Lumia phones meeting the historical software and Bluetooth requirements: the intended audience for smart alerts.
  • Modern iPhone and Android models: do not assume the DT-903’s Lumia notification features will operate; only Qi charging should be considered on the evidence available here.

A contemporaneous TIME review published February 4, 2015 reported Qi charging and pulsing notifications with Lumia 830 and Lumia 930. That is dated coverage of the product at launch, not confirmation of current compatibility or ongoing software support.

Troubleshooting the common indicator states

The light flashes rapidly

Check that the USB cable is connected to a compatible charger and that the charger is receiving power. Try a suitable wall outlet or USB power source, then reposition the phone centrally on the plate. The guide associates rapid flashing with a charging error or inadequate power.

The phone does not charge

Confirm that the phone supports Qi, place it face up on the charging area, and remove objects that may interfere with placement. A non-Qi phone cannot use the plate’s basic charging function.

No Lumia alerts appear

Verify the historical requirements—Lumia Denim, Device Hub 3.6 or later, Bluetooth 4.0 or higher and, where applicable, NFC support. Even when those conditions are met, legacy app and service availability may prevent the feature from working today.

The connection drops

Keep the paired phone within the guide’s stated 10-metre (33-foot) range and reduce obstructions or nearby electronic interference. The distance is a specification, not a promise of uninterrupted operation through walls.

Is the DT-903 still useful?

It can remain useful as a simple Qi charging surface if you already own one in working condition and have a suitable USB power source. Its distinctive value was the Lumia-era light language: charging status plus low-battery and notification cues. That value depends on obsolete Windows Phone software and compatible Lumia hardware, so it should not be the reason to buy one for a modern phone.

Because current stock, resale pricing, seller quality and included accessories are not established here, evaluate any second-hand listing carefully. Check the exact DT-903 model, physical condition, whether the USB cable or adapter is included, and whether the seller clearly describes Qi compatibility. The historical $59/€59 figure should not be used as a benchmark for today’s market.

Bottom line

The Nokia DT-903 is best understood as a period Qi charging plate with an optional Lumia-specific notification system. Qi-compatible devices can use its core charging function; the illuminated smart features require legacy Lumia software, Device Hub and Bluetooth conditions that may no longer be practical. Buy or keep it for basic Qi charging and its design, not for guaranteed modern notifications or speed.
