The Nokia 8 Sirocco was HMD Global’s attempt to make a genuinely luxurious Nokia smartphone. Unveiled at Mobile World Congress on February 25, 2018, it combined a stainless-steel frame, curved Gorilla Glass, a sharp QHD OLED display, wireless charging and Android One software. In person, it looked and felt more special than the regular Nokia 8—but its slippery ergonomics, missing headphone jack, high €749 launch price and previous-generation Snapdragon 835 made it a design-led flagship rather than a performance leader.

This is a hands-on assessment of what was visible at the MWC demonstration, followed by what the hardware meant in practice and what a buyer should know in 2026.

What was the Nokia 8 Sirocco?

HMD announced the Sirocco alongside the Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 1 and Nokia 8110 4G. It was the company’s premium Android statement: a compact, high-priced phone intended to revive the luxury spirit of earlier Sirocco-branded Nokias rather than win a specification race. Contemporary coverage described it as HMD’s design-focused flagship, while the official product specification confirms a 5.5-inch QHD pOLED display, Snapdragon 835 platform, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

European availability was announced for April 2018 at €749. That price put it directly against contemporary Samsung, Google, Huawei and OnePlus flagships, many of which used newer silicon or larger, more modern displays. Android Authority’s launch report documents the announcement, pricing and availability.

Design: luxurious materials, difficult ergonomics

The Sirocco’s strongest impression came before any app was opened. Its core was stainless steel, with curved glass on both the front and back and a slim 7.5mm profile. The 140.93 × 72.97mm body was notably compact at a time when 18:9 phones were becoming taller and wider. Reflective surfaces and the curved edges gave it the jewelry-like appearance HMD wanted.

That same shape divided hands-on opinions. Some observers found the rounded construction elegant and comfortable; others reported that the sharply turned edges could press into the hand and that the glass was exceptionally slippery. The phone was easy to admire on a display stand but harder to trust without a case. The rear camera module also protruded, so the handset did not lie completely flat.

The rear fingerprint reader was placed below the cameras and was generally reachable on this compact body. The side buttons provided the expected power and volume controls, although the curved frame left less flat gripping area than a conventional slab. The result was premium tactility with a practical trade-off: owners would probably want a case, which partially concealed the design they paid for. These observations are consistent with the contrasting MWC impressions from Android Headlines, Android Authority and Phone Scoop.

Display: dramatic OLED quality in an old-fashioned shape

The screen was a 5.5-inch pOLED panel running at 2,560 × 1,440 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio, protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Its high pixel density made text and photographs extremely sharp, while OLED contrast delivered deep blacks and vivid color. The curved sides added visual drama and helped the phone look narrower than its specification suggested.

The compromise was the aspect ratio. By early 2018, rivals were moving to 18:9 or similarly elongated screens, giving them more display area without making the body as wide. The Sirocco’s 16:9 panel was familiar for older video and apps but left larger bezels and made the design feel less current beside newer flagships. Curved edges also introduced reflections and created more opportunities for accidental touches than a flat panel. The official resolution, panel type and glass protection are listed on HMD’s specification page.

Performance and software: capable, but not the newest flagship platform

Inside was Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. That combination was fast enough for normal Android use, multitasking and contemporary games. The concern was not that the phone was slow; it was that the 835 was already a generation old when Snapdragon 845 phones arrived. At €749, buyers could reasonably expect the current flagship processor, making the Sirocco less future-proof and harder to recommend on value.

The phone launched with Android 8 Oreo through Google’s Android One program. The near-stock interface kept preinstalled software to a minimum and was intended to receive updates promptly. HMD’s historical promise was two years of Android version upgrades and three years of monthly security updates. HMD later advertised Android 10 availability on the product page, so the documented path was Oreo at launch followed by an update to Android 10—not an implication that Android 9 was the final release.

Android One improved the software proposition in 2018, but it did not make the Sirocco a Pixel. Camera processing, hardware integration and support duration were still HMD’s responsibilities. As of 2026, Android 10 is obsolete and the phone should not be expected to receive current Android or security updates. See HMD’s product page for its update history.

Cameras: versatile hardware, unfinished verdict

The rear system paired a 12-megapixel wide camera with a 13-megapixel telephoto camera, Carl Zeiss optics branding and 2× optical zoom. A dual-tone flash, 5-megapixel front camera, manual Pro Camera controls and Nokia’s dual-sight “Bothie” mode rounded out the feature set.

That arrangement was more flexible than a single camera: the telephoto lens could provide a genuine 2× optical view instead of relying entirely on digital enlargement, while Pro mode offered control over exposure and other settings. However, a short trade-show demonstration could not establish low-light performance, autofocus consistency, HDR behavior, portrait separation or video stabilization. Zeiss branding and optical zoom describe the hardware; they do not prove superior image quality. Those conclusions require full-review testing, not a launch-floor impression. The camera configuration is confirmed by Android Authority and HMD.

Hardware specification and useful features

Feature Nokia 8 Sirocco detail
Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 835
Memory and storage 6GB RAM; 128GB internal storage
Battery 3,260mAh, non-removable
Charging USB Type-C, Quick Charge support and Qi wireless charging
Durability IP67 dust and water resistance; Gorilla Glass 5
Connectivity 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and USB-C
Audio Single bottom-firing speaker; no 3.5mm headphone jack
Biometrics Rear fingerprint sensor

Wireless charging and IP67 protection were meaningful premium features, and 128GB was generous for the period. The 3,260mAh battery was respectable rather than unusually large. HMD’s published specifications do not list a microSD expansion slot, so buyers should treat the built-in storage as fixed. The single speaker and absent headphone port were immediate usability compromises. Full hardware details are available from HMD.

Compromises visible at the MWC demo

  • Older processor: Snapdragon 835 was competent but not the newest flagship silicon.
  • Slippery construction: curved glass and narrow edges made a protective case sensible.
  • 16:9 display: sharp and colorful, but less contemporary than the 18:9 panels appearing in 2018.
  • No headphone jack: wired listening required USB-C audio or an adapter.
  • Single speaker: there was no stereo speaker system.
  • Camera bump: the rear module prevented a perfectly flat back.
  • Fixed battery and storage: the battery was sealed and no microSD slot was specified.
  • Regional LTE caution: early coverage noted limited North American LTE-band support. Compatibility depends on the exact regional model, carrier and country; it should be checked rather than generalized to every U.S. network.

A hands-on session also could not measure battery endurance, sustained gaming heat, long-term durability, call quality, update reliability or LTE performance across regions. Those are review questions, not conclusions that can be drawn from a few minutes with a demonstration unit.

Was it a true flagship?

In price, materials and marketing, yes: HMD positioned the Sirocco as its premium flagship. In performance hierarchy, the label needs qualification. The phone offered flagship-level storage, display resolution, water resistance and charging features, but its previous-generation processor and several missing conveniences kept it from being an unequivocal 2018 performance leader.

Its sensible appeal was therefore specific: buy the Sirocco for distinctive construction, compact size, clean Android and practical extras—not because it delivered the fastest chip or the most modern screen format.

What the Nokia 8 Sirocco means in 2026

The Sirocco is now a discontinued 4G handset with an obsolete software baseline. It can still interest Nokia collectors, enthusiasts who value its design, or someone seeking an inexpensive secondary or offline device. It is not a sensible primary phone for most people who depend on current security patches, modern network support or reliable battery life.

Used examples carry risks that were irrelevant at launch:

  • Battery capacity may have degraded substantially after years of use.
  • Curved OLED panels can suffer burn-in, cracks or touch defects.
  • USB-C ports, fingerprint readers and buttons may be worn.
  • IP67 protection should not be assumed after age, impact or a screen/back-glass repair.
  • Imported units may have incompatible LTE bands, regional firmware or no useful warranty.
  • A “rare” or “vintage” description is not proof of condition or investment value.

Before buying, verify the curved display, 6GB/128GB configuration, stainless-steel frame, exact model designation, battery condition, LTE bands for your carrier, Android version, charger and return policy. Current listings vary widely and asking prices are not completed-sale data; eBay’s product page and category page show that availability and condition differ substantially.

Verdict

The Nokia 8 Sirocco was a memorable demonstration that HMD could build a beautiful premium phone. Its stainless steel, curved glass, compact body, QHD OLED display, Android One software, wireless charging and dual-camera hardware gave it genuine character. But the Snapdragon 835, slippery edges, 16:9 panel, missing headphone jack, single speaker and €749 price made it a compromised flagship even in 2018. In 2026 it is best treated as a collector’s or enthusiast’s device, not a practical everyday recommendation.
