A handheld strain-gauge indicator powers a bridge-type sensor, reads its small electrical output, and displays a calibrated value such as force, load, pressure, torque, or strain. The right model depends first on whether its input range, excitation, wiring, and calibration method match your transducer; features such as peak capture or data logging come after compatibility.

What a handheld strain-gauge indicator does

Strain gauges change electrical resistance as they deform. In a load cell or other bridge-based transducer, the resulting signal is small, commonly described in millivolts per volt (mV/V) of excitation. The indicator supplies excitation voltage to the bridge, measures its differential output, applies calibration, and presents an engineering reading.

These instruments are made for portable checks in the field or on a shop floor. Depending on the sensor and setup, the displayed quantity may be load, force, pressure, torque, or strain. A display alone does not make a transducer compatible: the indicator must support its electrical signal and provide a suitable way to configure or calibrate it.

Check sensor compatibility before comparing features

Start with the sensor label or datasheet. Record its sensitivity, excitation requirement, bridge resistance, connector pinout, and calibration information. Then compare those details with the indicator specifications.

Ruiwaer 4PCS Brown Strain Gauge High-Precision Resistance Strain Gauge Foil Strain Gauge Icstation Foil Resistance Strain Gauge Sensor 350 ohm BF350-3AA Load Cell Pressure Resistance
  • The product is a resistive strain gauge sensor with a nominal resistance of 350 ohms that changes when force is applied. By measuring the change in resistance of the sensor, a measurement of the force exerted on it can be obtained.
  • The base of the product is made of modified phenolphthalein and the wire grid is made of constantan foil.
  • The product has high precision and good static measurement stability, and is suitable for 0.02 liquid level sensors.
  • Product size: 7.1 x 4.5mm/0.28 x 0.18in, convenient for heat dissipation, low power consumption per unit area, and very easy to paste and weld.
  • Product Dimensions: 4 pieces resistive strain gauge sensors (with wire).
  • Input range: Confirm that the transducer’s output at the intended load falls within the indicator’s supported mV/V range. Honeywell documents input up to 50 mV/V for the 7561-PSD; SENSY specifies ±5 mV/V for the INDI-PSD; VALCOM lists measuring ranges from 0.3 to 5 mV/V for the VGMH. These specifications are not interchangeable, and the correct choice depends on the sensor.
  • Bridge excitation: Verify that the indicator supplies the voltage and current the sensor requires. SENSY specifies 5 VDC excitation for the INDI-PSD. Do not assume another unit supplies the same excitation simply because it is marketed for load cells.
  • Wiring and connectors: Match the sensor pinout and bridge configuration, and check whether the required cable or connector accessories are available. Confirm that cable length and the intended units or range configuration suit the job.
  • Calibration: Determine whether you can enter sensor sensitivity and perform zero/span or shunt calibration, or whether the sensor supports TEDS setup. A mismatch in calibration can produce an unhelpful reading even when the sensor connects electrically.

Compare documented handheld models

The following examples illustrate different feature sets. Verify the current product configuration and documentation with the manufacturer or distributor before purchase, particularly for connectors, options, and service availability.

Model Input and setup Readout and capture Power and physical details
Honeywell 7561-PSD Portable strain-gauge/bridge indicator; accepts up to 50 mV/V input. TEDS-capable variants are described in the product family documentation. 7½-digit LCD, dual ranges, gross/net and peak/trough selection. IP65/NEMA 4 enclosure; two AA batteries. Honeywell’s 2008 datasheet lists a weight of 250 g.
SENSY INDI-PSD / INDI-PSD232 ±5 mV/V input, 5 VDC excitation, TEDS and shunt calibration; intended for strain-gauge load cells, force transducers, and torque meters. 7-digit LCD, dual range, tare, hold, peak, and trough; RS-232 is an option. IP65 enclosure and two AA batteries. SENSY’s 2019 datasheet states 35 hours of normal battery life or up to 450 hours in low-power mode with a 350-ohm transducer.
UNIPULSE F490A For strain-gauge sensors measuring load, pressure, and torque; six selectable calibration channels. Records data as CSV for USB file transfer; includes peak/bottom hold and high/low limit comparison. Approximately 30 hours on AA alkaline batteries, according to the current product page.
VALCOM VGMH Portable meter for checking load-cell and pressure-sensor values; supports TEDS. Color TFT with waveform and bar-meter views; records indicator values and graphs. The current product page lists 24-bit A/D conversion and 1,000 conversions per second. USB bus power or four AA batteries; approximate weight 320 g.

Choose the features that fit the measurement

For a quick portable readout

If the task is to check a live value or compare it with a limit, prioritize a compatible input, straightforward zero or tare controls, and the hold functions you need. Honeywell and SENSY document dual ranges and peak/trough-related functions; SENSY also documents tare and hold. Check the particular model and configuration for the exact controls required.

Taidacent Strain Gauge 350 Ohm Bend Flex Sensor Weighing Amplifier Module Pressure Sensor Analog Output Strain Gauge Test Kit (Extension Cable)
  • Voltage: DC5V board with blue LED power indicator analog output
  • Bending angle: 0-30 degrees
  • The greater the degree of bending, the higher the output voltage: bending downwards, the output value decreases; bending upwards, the output value increases
  • With zero potentiometer
  • Output analog voltage 0-5V

For evidence you can review later

When a measurement must be saved or analyzed after the reading, the F490A’s CSV recording and USB transfer or the VGMH’s value and graph recording may be more useful than a basic display. The VGMH also offers waveform and bar-meter views. Confirm that the recorded format and transfer method fit your workflow.

For faster sensor setup

TEDS can let a compatible indicator read sensor identification and calibration information, reducing manual setup. SENSY and VALCOM document TEDS support, and Honeywell describes TEDS-capable variants in its product family documentation. TEDS is useful only when the sensor and indicator both support the relevant data; otherwise, plan to enter sensitivity and carry out the appropriate calibration manually.

For outdoor or mobile work

Consider enclosure protection, operating environment, battery arrangement, expected battery life, and instrument weight together. Honeywell and SENSY specify IP65 protection, but that rating alone does not establish suitability for every environment or guarantee a particular handling outcome. For SENSY battery-life figures, the stated condition is a 350-ohm transducer; the low-power figure is explicitly a low-power mode.

A practical selection and setup sequence

  1. Identify the transducer: Read its datasheet for mV/V sensitivity, excitation voltage, bridge resistance, connector pinout, and available calibration data.
  2. Match the electrical specifications: Check the indicator’s input range and excitation against the sensor requirements. Ask the manufacturer or distributor if a key specification or wiring detail is unclear.
  3. Choose the calibration path: Use TEDS when the sensor carries compatible IEEE 1451.4 data and the indicator supports it. Otherwise, enter the sensor sensitivity and use the appropriate zero/span or shunt-calibration procedure.
  4. Choose how to capture results: Decide whether a stable live reading is enough, whether you need peak or trough capture, or whether the job calls for stored files or graphs. Select the functions and transfer options accordingly.
  5. Confirm the complete field setup: Verify connectors and cables, cable length, units and range configuration, power needs, and local service availability before relying on the instrument.
