Choose Halo Infinite if you want first-person aiming, fast movement, vehicles, open-world campaign exploration and a competitive multiplayer sandbox you can enter for free. Choose Gears 5 if you prefer third-person cover tactics, heavier close-range fights, coordinated squad play and a campaign that supports three-player online or split-screen co-op.
Perspective and co-op format usually settle this decision faster than graphics or story themes. Halo Infinite is the more mobile, open-ended shooter; Gears 5 is the more deliberate, positional team game.

Halo Infinite puts the camera behind the character’s eyes. You read the battlefield through weapon sights and first-person movement, then use mobility and vehicles to change the engagement distance. That combination gives Halo a broad range of situations. You can approach a fight across open ground, reposition quickly, use a vehicle to alter the pace or leave an encounter and return from another angle. The open campaign structure is important: exploration is part of the game rather than a short transition between tightly staged missions.
Halo’s first-person view also makes aiming feel immediate. Players who enjoy tracking targets, switching weapons and managing space in a competitive arena will generally find its sandbox more natural than Gears’ cover rhythm. The trade-off is that the game asks you to monitor threats from every direction without a permanent third-person view of your character.
Gears 5 is a third-person cover shooter
Gears 5 keeps your character visible and builds encounters around cover. Xbox Wire describes the series’ modernized controls as retaining Gears’ “signature cover-based feel.” In practice, the central question is not only which weapon to use, but when to leave one piece of cover, where to move next and how to coordinate that movement with teammates.
The third-person camera makes your position relative to cover, enemies and squadmates easier to read. Battles feel more deliberate because exposing yourself has a clear cost. Close-range encounters and coordinated pushes matter more than the free-form traversal associated with Halo.
Gears is therefore a strong fit for players who like holding a position, timing a flank, reviving a teammate and advancing as a unit. If you want first-person aiming, open spaces and vehicles to define the fight, Halo is the safer choice.

This format is especially suitable for a solo player who wants room between major story beats. You can treat the world as a place to explore rather than simply a series of corridors. The same openness also lets you vary your approach to combat: move quickly, create distance or use a vehicle when the situation allows.

Gears 5: a focused campaign built for a squad

The campaign’s cover-focused design reinforces that cooperative structure. One player can draw attention, another can move between cover and a third can support the advance. The value is not simply having more characters on screen; it is being able to coordinate movement and recover from mistakes together.
Gears 5 is the better campaign fit when your priority is a planned, team-oriented run rather than open-ended exploration. It also suits players who prefer a third-person view that keeps their character and nearby cover visible while they make tactical decisions.

The broader appeal is variety in how you move through a fight. Halo favors players who want a mobile combat sandbox, competitive matchmaking and the freedom to use open spaces and vehicles where available. The first-person perspective keeps the emphasis on aim, movement and rapid reactions.
Free-to-play does not mean every online condition is permanent or identical across platforms. On console, online multiplayer and certain co-op features require a qualifying Game Pass tier. Check the current Xbox listing for your region before assuming that a specific subscription is included or that a rule has remained unchanged.
Gears 5’s multiplayer range
Gears 5 offers refreshed player-versus-player Versus play alongside cooperative player-versus-environment modes. Horde is built around surviving waves together, while Escape provides a separate cooperative mission format. Those modes give Gears a clear advantage if your group wants structured PvE after completing the campaign.

Gears 5’s store listing identifies Xbox Game Studios as publisher and The Coalition as developer. How to check your current cost before installing
- Open the Xbox Store on your console or the Xbox listing on your supported PC.
- Search for “Halo Infinite” or “Gears 5” and open the product page, rather than relying on an old package name or a search result summary.
- Check whether the page shows Game Pass access in your region and which current membership is required for the campaign or online features.
- For Halo, distinguish the free-to-play multiplayer listing from the campaign access option.
- For Gears, check whether the edition shown includes the content you want, especially if you are considering the Game of the Year Edition and its Hivebusters expansion.

Pick Halo for first-person competitive play
If your main goal is matchmaking, aim practice and a broad competitive sandbox, Halo’s free-to-play multiplayer removes the need to buy the campaign first. Its mobile, open-space approach is also a better fit for players who do not want every encounter to revolve around cover.
Pick Gears for PvE variety after the story
Gears 5 offers a more obvious cooperative end point through Horde and Escape. Those modes matter if your group wants to keep playing together after the campaign instead of moving immediately to competitive matches.
Choose based on camera preference when both sound appealing

Assuming free multiplayer includes Halo’s campaign
Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is free to play, but the campaign is a separate access decision. It can be purchased or included through some Game Pass memberships. Check the product page instead of assuming the free multiplayer download unlocks the story.
Assuming Halo has the same local campaign option as Gears
Gears 5 explicitly advertises three-player online or split-screen campaign co-op. The available Halo information establishes network co-op but not an equivalent three-player split-screen campaign promise. If local play is essential, select Gears unless the current listing for your platform says otherwise.
Assuming every Game Pass rule is permanent
Membership tiers, online requirements and regional catalogs change. Verify the current tier and feature requirement at checkout or before starting an online session.
Reading performance numbers as guarantees
Up to 120 FPS is a stated target for Halo Infinite on Xbox Series X|S and supported PCs, while Gears 5 lists 120 FPS in Versus on Series X|S. Those figures depend on the supported hardware, mode and display; they are not a promise that every device or activity runs at that rate.
