A message by itself usually cannot hand someone your WhatsApp account, but a convincing fake message can trick you into giving away the verification code or linking a scammer’s device. Never share WhatsApp codes or PINs, treat unusual requests from friends as unverified, and check linked devices if anything seems wrong.
How a fake message can lead to a WhatsApp takeover
The common trick is social engineering: scammers persuade you to do something that gives them access. A message that appears to come from a friend may be fraudulent if that friend’s account has already been compromised.
The “send me the code” trick
- A scammer enters your phone number into WhatsApp to trigger a genuine verification code.
- A compromised contact messages you, often claiming the code arrived by mistake and asking you to forward it.
- If you share the six-digit code, the scammer can use it to access your account and log you out.
The Singapore Police Force has warned about this pattern and advises people never to share WhatsApp verification codes, personal information, banking details or OTPs with anyone. A code can be genuine while the request for it is a scam.
Fake WhatsApp Web pages and QR codes
A different scheme uses search results that lead to fake “WhatsApp Web” sites. In a campaign reported by the Singapore Police Force in 2024, the sites displayed a genuine WhatsApp QR code. Scanning it could link the victim’s account to a scammer’s computer, giving the scammer access without asking the victim to send a verification code.

For that specific Singapore campaign, police recorded at least 20 reports and at least S$46,000 in losses since January 2024. Those figures describe that campaign, not the total number or value of WhatsApp takeovers worldwide.
Screen-sharing calls
Scammers may pose as government or bank officials on a video call and ask you to share your screen. If you display a WhatsApp verification code while sharing, the caller can read it. A caller’s apparent authority does not make the request safe.

How to spot and stop a suspicious request
- Do not share codes or PINs. Keep WhatsApp verification codes and your two-step-verification PIN private. Do not send them to a friend, bank, caller or person claiming to be an official.
- Verify through a separate channel. If someone asks for a code or money, call a number you already know or contact them another way. Do not rely on the same chat to confirm the request; an impostor may control that account. Meta’s advice is: “PAUSE: Take time before you respond.”
- Do not scan unexpected QR codes. Open WhatsApp Web by entering its official address yourself rather than following a search ad, unsolicited link or lookalike page. A QR code can authorize a linked device.
- Decline suspicious screen sharing. Do not show a caller your screen to “verify” a WhatsApp account, reveal an OTP or complete a bank or government check.
- Turn on two-step verification. In WhatsApp, go to Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Enable. This adds a PIN step; keep that PIN private too.
- Inspect linked devices. In WhatsApp, open Linked devices and log out any device you do not recognize. An unexpected device or a sudden logout can be a warning sign.
What to do if you are logged out or see an unknown device
- Use WhatsApp’s official support or account-recovery route. Reach it through the official app or WhatsApp’s own website, not a link sent by someone offering to recover the account. Follow the prompts for your situation.
- Warn your contacts using another channel. Tell friends and family that the account may be compromised and that they should ignore requests for money, codes or personal information from it.
- Check Linked devices. If you can still access the account, sign out devices you do not recognize. If you are locked out, prioritize regaining access through WhatsApp’s official recovery process.
- Tell contacts not to share OTPs or codes. The Singapore Police Force’s 2026 advisory identifies sudden logout and contacts reporting unusual OTP requests as signs that an account may have been compromised.
Meta/WhatsApp said that it banned over 6.8 million accounts linked to criminal scam centers in the first six months of 2025. That is an enforcement figure tied to accounts linked to those centers; it is not a count of all WhatsApp takeovers.
