U.S. investigators found evidence that hackers accessed the propulsion system of the VL Prosperity as the fully laden oil tanker approached the Texas coast in summer 2026, according to Bloomberg reporting reproduced by LiveMint on October 3. The report does not establish that the intruders controlled the ship, disabled it, or caused harm. The FBI said there were no reports of operational disruption, danger to the crew, vessel instability, or environmental impact.
What happened aboard the VL Prosperity
Bloomberg, in reporting reproduced by LiveMint, said U.S. officials familiar with the matter found evidence of unauthorized access to the tanker’s propulsion system while it was bound for Galveston. The officials were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. The FBI and Coast Guard declined to comment on that specific allegation.
The FBI did confirm that it and the Coast Guard boarded the VL Prosperity and another vessel “to ensure integrity of the vessel’s operational and information technology systems following indications that the networks of both vessels were compromised.” The FBI statement, quoted in the LiveMint account, said: “Currently, there are no reports of operational disruptions, vessel instability, physical danger to crews, or environmental impacts.”
Access does not mean the hackers took control
The report says investigators had not established how long the intruders had access, how they got in, or what they could control. Evidence of access to a propulsion system is not proof that attackers issued commands to it. The available reporting also does not establish that the ship was slowed, stopped, disabled, or otherwise disrupted.

Newsquawk likewise described attribution, the extent of any control, and whether the vessel was disabled or merely probed as unresolved. Next News Network said additional claims circulating in social media and Iranian state media had not been independently verified; those claims should not be treated as established facts about this incident.
Why access to ship systems raises safety concerns
Ships rely on network-linked systems for navigation, communications, and other operations. If operational systems are compromised, the consequences could be serious, particularly on a large vessel carrying hazardous cargo. That is a potential risk, not the reported outcome aboard the VL Prosperity.

Alex Soukhanov, a licensed ship captain whose firm True North Group works on maritime cybersecurity, told Bloomberg: “These are the largest moving objects in the world transporting the world’s economy,” and “We just can’t have this type of unauthorized access. Every mariner should be extremely concerned.”
Svante Einarsson, head of cyber security at ship technical advisory firm DNV, described loss of functions on a large vessel carrying hazardous material during a cyberattack as the “worst case scenario.” He also said most vessels have fallback systems that allow crews to continue operations. These comments describe general risks and safeguards; they do not establish what happened to the tanker’s systems during the reported incident.
